Denari

Denari

Denari is a narrative-driven hack and slasher with a telekinetic twist. It tells the story of a boy who is aided by the spirits of the dead to save his people from an invading empire. Featuring the iconic toon-style art of Ninja Kiwi veteran Tamihana Greaves and powerful soundtrack from multiple award winning composer David Mason.

Mechanics

On top of snappy attacks, quick dashes, precise counters and slick executions, players can harness the power of the goddess Qira. As a lone warrior against an army, manipulating enemy attacks to cause friendly fire damage is crucial to gaining an advantage.

Redirect

Ranged attacks can be caught and redirected. Some projectiles cause AOE damage upon redirected hit.

Blast

Taiu can wield spiritual energy that seeks nearby enemies.

Friendly Fire

Each enemy has a heavy attack that can hurt other enemies. Taiu can manipulate these attacks to gain the upper hand.

Characters

The player character of the story. Taiu is a young orphan who grew up on port Nali, a peaceful fishing village. He dreams of becoming one of Qira’s Apostles, a group of elite warrior monks who dedicate themselves to the service of the goddess Qira and her people.

Taiu’s zany teacher. Teach is a former apostle whose obsession with mastery has lead him to seek a disciple to train in the art of combat. As Taiu’s master, Teach takes it upon himself to push Taiu to his limits and beyond, sometimes at the risk of his dear student’s life.

The elder of Port Nali. Ooma’s long life of hard earned lessons have imbued her with great wisdom, enough to doubt even the most sacred traditions. Her disapproval in Taiu’s path and distaste for his teacher are rooted in questions of faith, ones she’s sought the answers to her whole life.

Enemies

The Denari army are a terrible force powered by advanced weaponry and dark magic. From the brutish Beast to the fire-wielding Crone, the Denari are able to adapt to and overpower any force that stands in their way.

To make matters worse, Their general, “the Summoner” possesses the power to teleport his soldiers from afar, enabling the army to cross continents and conquer new territories efficiently.

To stop the invasion for good, Taiu must face the Summoner and end him.

See No Evil

See No Evil

Good puzzle game about a Seer who opened his eyes in a world that orders them closed. To bring the change to the world the Seer has to come out of the depths and climb up the mountain. There he can let his voice to be heard.

I would describe the game as a Sokoban with sound control system and bit of a stealth. There are four chapters, each has a different setting and introduces new enemies and gameplay elements. As your enemies can’t see you, you have to lure them out of your way with your voice. But as they lost their sight their hearing became much more sharp. And they are also better runners than you. You also have to stay clear of spikes and firing guns. There is no penalty for getting caught or dying, if you don’t aim for the related achievement of course.

Basically, See No Evil is a nice puzzle game with okay music and story and, which sold me, a clean, original and interesting art style - but a few things sour the experience.

Hint: Restarting a level does not count as a death, probably since there are actually a few places where you can get stuck. Make use of that when going for “no death” chapters.

  • Okay music

  • Okay story with cool delivery of the end

  • Great art style

  • Two instances, Game and Game Plus

0 Spikes sometimes walkable

  • Some invisible walls and edges

I’ll have to downvote this because of the LONGNESS of the first two challenges, either you encourage to replay or you make it utterly painful, sheesh.

The characters, the idea and the mystery are pretty decent tho.

The game is a series of puzzles followed by character dialogue until the ending which is something else. Any mistake during the puzzle section is fatal for one character who is then permanently absent for the rest of that playthrough. Every dialogue segment is unique for every combination of surviving characters.

I have mixed feelings about the puzzles. I liked them on my first playthrough, but they do not have any replay value and you will likely have to replay them multiple times to unlock extra story content. My favorite part of the game is the dialogue which feels intriguingly offbeat. I also just love the survival-puzzle game idea which I haven’t seen before.

Remember that awesome Tower-Defense RPG game from the DS everyone had been talking about when you were in high-school? I do, back in the 2000s, everyone in my highschool had a DS. While most girls were playing Barbie games on their pink DS consoles, my friends and I were all about trading Pokemon and running through Fire Emblem Games on Hard Mode and showing our savefiles to each other, in complete awe. Nothing sparked our interests like a brand new DS game that brings a brand new formula to the table. Lock’s Quest was one such game; one that mixed Tower Defense with RPG and a story the likes we’ve never seen before (We were Pokemon tamers, not students who liked reading on Drama lol but we’d be lying if we said Lock’s Quest didn’t make us tear up at its incredible ending).

I have played the original NDS Version and it was one of my most favorite games.

But sadly, the remake is not as good as the original

+: Same good old Story (Avoid the Trading Cards, one of them contains a spoiler)

+: Good Soundtrack

+: Nice Genre Mix

+: XBOX360 Controlls are good

+: Harder than the NDS Version

! You thought you know who is the boss of the game after Agony revealed his true Identity, you thought you know who is the boss of the game after you have beaten him, but after you have faced Sapper using MK Controls on hard difficulty, you (perhaps) know the real one

Septerra Core

Note: Considering Septerra Core is my Favorite Game, my opinion may be biased.

But first the issues with the Steam version:

-It is the 1.02 version, you need to download version 1.04 or the GOG version that fixes dialogue skipping, but has a few delays with a few combat sounds.

-The Videos don’t work, unless you have a QuickTime 6 or below and you run it on XP compatibility. Sometimes that will not work either and have to search the internet for additional help.

-There is a Spell: Destroyer(Chaos+Law) that may crash the Game, usually on bosses.

This 1999 RPG is a good buy, but it is not without it’s flaws. If you are into Final Fantasy 7, or the Fallout series, you will enjoy the story of this game as it is very similar.

First the story: It’s very well polished. There are seven “shells” (hence the prefix sept), with each shell being at a different position relative to the hot core in the center of the planet. The inhabitants of shell 1 (the Chosen) believe they are trying to save the world when they just want to use the powers for their own ends. In this game, saving the world means aligning the shells so that the world is stable. But a lady on shell 2 (the protaginist named Maya) is aware of the dangers the abuse of power is bringing to her town, Oasis is sets off on a journey to stop this madness.

This is fantastic! Initially I thought this game was only going to be for English learners and kids. But its actually a great point-and-click adventure game for anyone who enjoys that genre. I got it for my mother to play because she’s been trying to brush up on her English. But I very quickly found myself invested in the puzzles and story. If you’re looking for a good quality adventure game with some challenging scenarios then I can highly recommend it.

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes Complete Edition

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes Complete Edition

I went into this game being cautiously optimistic. I trusted that Suda51 wouldn’t give us an unenjoyable experience, but I also didn’t expect it to have a riveting story or captivating narrative. I was sorely mistaken.

Gameplay: It’s an overhead beat-em-up that has more depth than people typically give it credit for (more options and mechanics than NMH1), but the leniency of the game’s difficulty and level-up system discouraged people to understand it beyond a simplistic level. Like an in-game character suggests, you can try getting through the game without leveling up. See how far it gets you, as this way of playing heavily encourages you to learn the timing and setups against particular enemies.

I strongly recommend this game. I’ve been waiting the PC release for a bunch of time but eventually, it’s here and i’m so happy to play it and having so much fun trying to complete every achievements. I am a big fan of the No More Heroes series and Grasshopper Manufacture games in general terms but this game can easily be enjoyed by anyone liking wacky games, symbolism, challenge and the beat them up genre.

Xanadu Next

Xanadu Next

Balance elevates and limits this game. More than any of Falcom’s projects from their late Windows PC period, systems, aesthetics, and non-linearity counterbalance to create a sprawling action adventure that, even with its shortcomings and missed opportunities, seems fully conceived and replete with potential. If anything, this game rewards you for experiencing as much of it as possible, and of Falcom games and outside influences it took from.

I’m already near the end of my third Xanadu Next playthrough, storming my way through Castle Strangerock with every skill, technique, and trick in my book. Every time I know I’m playing one of the easier, often more accessible Falcom games from this period, but it never gets old. Even Gurumin has difficulty options this game sorely could use, not that it’s bad or merely good w/o them. Ys: The Oath in Felghana, released the same year as Xananext, has that and more detailed NPCs to entertain you, not to forget Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim which is heavy on both world-building and character. The soundtrack, as textured, baroque and diverse in genre (including hard rock for two tracks later on), isn’t as large and full as Gurumin’s or Trails in the Sky FC’s. And you don’t get interesting mechanics those games feature, like rhythmic critical hits or attack/experience multipliers based on how many monsters you rend and how quickly. After some thinking I get how unusual Xanadu Next seems to fans of the company’s games, mostly because it blends bits and pieces and then provides a number of seemingly less significant but unique systems.

Real player with 58.0 hrs in game

Great game to pick up if you like the Ys series, and a great value as well. This game will keep you busy for a while, and manages to remain fresh throughout. This game could be described as a slower, more methodical, puzzle-heavy Ys. I would also argue that it is more difficult than the Ys games (at least the ones available on Steam). The puzzles are hard and the combat has been slowed down and made much more punishing, forcing you to be deliberate in your actions, a noticeable departure from the super fast hack and slash style of Ys.

Needs a better translation, I am aware that the developer said he paid a guy on fiver for the translation, however I am also aware that that guy run it through google translate. The game needs more features including an indepth tutorial, the game is rather bare bones and very difficult, which it fine, I would appreciate more QOL quality of life features. The AI pathing is terrible. The boxes for text are very small.

It is like a game dev tycoon but too complex and also hard. Game is quite stable I didn’t notice any bugs so far but I hope developer will make it little easier to play. It is hard if you are casual player, it will take few attempts to understand how the game works but after you understand it you will start having fun with it.

Dodgeball Academia

Dodgeball Academia

A straight-up fun time. Pure joy.

Dodgeball RPG. Dodgeball. RPG. This concept pleases my inner child, and Pocket Trap delivered. This game is stylish, endearing, and smashes your face with exhilarating gameplay.

Presentation

Dodgeball Academia’s super electrifying visual style is distinct and colorful, with 2D animation that explodes with personality and reminds me of cartoons from the ’90s and early 2000s.

Otto is such a likeable and vibrant character. He’s always eager to play some dodgeball and show what he’s capable of, but first and foremost, he’s there to have fun and make friends, and he never lets go of that fire in his heart. He also has this very iconic look that I really like. He’d make a great shounen anime protagonist.

Dodgeball Academia is an addictive sports-based RPG akin to the Mario Tennis GBC game and Golf Story. I was very fond of the art style which reminded me heavily of The Amazing World of Gumball cartoon. The statistic system was very streamlined and easy to understand, and the many different types of equipment were interesting enough and beneficial enough for me to actually seek them all out as opposed to just using whatever I had.

Some may say that the game is quite short at around 10-15 hours. I did at times feel that the game was being padded due to the lack of unique areas to explore. You would quite often spend a chapter running back and forth between locations you had visited previously several times before. This was especially apparent during the last chapter, where you fight the same enemies you had already defeated in the first half of the game, and visit every area of the school again in order to collect key items to progress. While I don’t think the game should have been shorter, it definitely started to outstay its welcome due to the constant padding.
