Hydra Slayer

Hydra Slayer

The description of this game does not do it justice. Roguelike based on mathematical puzzles sounds like an arithmetic quiz program or someone packaging puzzles in a mediocre framework. One of the reviews even said it would be ok without the math. I envisioned puzzles where there was a correct solution every time.

This is first a roguelike (oldschool roguelike), and the ‘puzzles’ are, like a game play in awell designed roguelike, emergent - naturally arising from the procedurally generated world. There are often many good solutions to the puzzles, and the game play revolves around finding good enough solutions, and using your resources wisely.

Very cool, but very specific game. If you are a mathematician, programmer, roguelike fan or just a nerd, most likely, this game is for you. Otherwise… Anyway, if you’re not outright scared with the concept of killing ancient beasts with the power of math, you should give it a try.

You can start with the free version . Keep in mind, though, that free version lacks some recent and/or steam-specific features.

Beetle Uprising

Beetle Uprising

  • Very cute.

  • Very relaxing.

  • The evolution system is realistic.

  • You can feel the power growing.

  • Kind of dislike the fact that we must kill our own beetles.

  • Don’t be too boldy. It is a relaxing game. Not a “Conquer as quick as possible” game.

  • You end up with a mess on the floor.

  • Decorations are useless and lack of potential.

  • Kind of annoying how the inventories work. Lack of organization. Annoying to navigate.

Conclusion :

I am really not sure if this game is supposed to be beautiful or efficient…

While at this time it is still in early access, this title has a lot going for it even with some of the drawbacks.

Its a nice little management game with some real time tactics for the combat, that grows in depth once you start playing around with the genetics to improve your combat abilities. You go from simply looking at your highest stat numbers and trying to combine them, into looking at the genetic tree of your particular units then breeding based off that to improve on your entire gene pool, which does lead into one aspect of the game that needs some work in my opinion at this stage as you spend a lot of time just sat there, combining genes then throwing the inferior beetles into a blender to make room for the next set.

Tin Can

Tin Can

I came across this game whilst browsing for titles under £12 & Im sooooo glad I did cus I might not of ever discovered it under its own name & what it represents: “Tin Can.”

The game puts you in an escape pod being launched from a large exploding Spacecraft.(cutscene) It is then upto you to survive has long has you can by managing the different systems via there components aboard the “Pod” from steller “events” occuring in space - which are (ATM) Ice Nebulas, Electrical Nebulas, Asteriod Collisions & Star Proximities. Each of which event requires different ways of handling your Pods systems & there components to survive them. In saying that there is a learning curve.

One of the best system simulations in an indie game. It focuses heavily on this aspect, and the production quality is very high probably partially thanks to the narrow focus. But even after you have seen all of the basics of the gameplay loop, you still haven’t seen everything.

There is more than meets the eye

Tin Can reveals surprising depth and attention to detail in the systems simulation, as well as how external events in space affect them. There are multiple ways to deal with problems with varying effectiveness and amount of work, time and danger involved in solving them. There are strategies to deal with individual problems, as well as overall strategy with how you approach your entire run. Experimenting with different approaches extend the hours of fun you’ll get out of this. Although I have to mention that I have found “the best” solution to each of the encounters that I would be tempted to use every time if the idea of experimentation wasn’t more interesting.

Needs more development time and testing alot of stuff only half works and the inventory system needs alot of work. They need to change the inventory system as well as change the way your character gets energy replenished, it is currently too tedious to eat/drink. Cannot recommend this game, especially at that price. I see what they were going for and it is a cool concept, but for the price there is much better games for the same if not cheaper. I would like to recommend this game and give a good review, but in its current state I cannot. Hopefully it will get better and I think they should take ideas from games like Space Engineers on how to execute this games functions much better. For now this review will remain negative until much needed improvements are made.

Creature Lab

Creature Lab

Become a mad scientist in search of the ultimate mutagen!

Creature lab sets you on a difficult path of a genius scientist with a very liberal approach to test subjects and official procedures. Establish your hideout and let the experiments commence!

Take stock of your inventory. There’s no use hoping for government funds so you’ll make do with anything you can find or even steal. Prepare your laboratory, obtain basic reagents, and see what happens when you mix them together. Analyze your results and see if your mutagens have any practical use or if they’re only useful as ingredients for more powerful concoctions.

Apply your mutagens to test subjects and observe how they react. Grow entirely new bodyparts and attach them to the creatures you create. Discover tens of different interactions between mutagens and body parts as you slowly assemble an army of mutants.

Running low on resources? Need more test subjects? Send your creatures into the city! Find whatever resources you need. Spread panic in the city to scare off anyone trying to find your hideout. And if the military starts looking for you, you can infect the citizens to delay the army as you prepare a more permanent solution. Let no one stop you in your search for the ultimate mutagen!

A game about watching number rise. But what is life, if not watching the year count rise and your bank account dwindle?

Now, I’ve just finished my first “complete” playthrough and there are a few things I want to talk about. Let’s start with the most important: most of the negative reviews are old. The UI isn’t perfect but it’s not bad and same with the tutorial. In my entire playtime I’ve only found what I think was a bug once.

The artstyle, music and sound effects are gorgeous.

DO NOT buy this game expecting something similar to a city/base builder. Actually you build very few structures, and spend most of the time upgrading your existing buildings, changing the engineering cells and min-maxing the different configurations.

Real player with 17.0 hrs in game

It has the marks of an interesting, fun little game, however…

Be warned:

it’s not really release-ready, regardless what they claim.

The game is full of annoying bugs and overlooked illogical elements, the controls are inconsistent, the whole thing is sorely in need of a UI/UX overview, it’s hard to navigate, hard to sort out what’s what.

Currently expansion is impossible, due to a heating issue.

And in my personal opinion it does not look good.

I’ll persist, maybe it’ll be a good game; currently it’s a beta, that’s not very playable.

I’m sorry to the Developer for this review who is on my friend’s list as well (probably not for much longer) but I can no longer recommend this game.

I’m supposedly and apparently one of the best players of this game (according to the dev) and its predecessor so I don’t post this lightly. I currently have the number 4 best score on expert on the global score list registered back in January when the game was first released and number 1 on the previous version)I’ve sunk several hours into it. So why don’t I recommend it?

Real player with 141.5 hrs in game

This is a preview of first impressions only as I have played only 1.8 hours.

What I can say now is that it is fun, very colorful, runs very smoothly and has a decent sound track too.

I only play single player, but that’s fine with this game. Glad I bought it, and anyone who likes a game with

some character to it, arcade style shooter with leader board and plenty of achievments is sure to like it.

EDIT: Bottom of this reivew for some updates

This is such a beautiful game already!

A beautiful homage to cats (the developers used their real kitty sounds, and pictures) and their perspective of the world.

It makes you feel tiny and defenseless, but at the same time smart and cunning.

There already are some incredible elements to be taken into account, first and foremost, the atmospheric poignancy. With the 3D audio enabled, it really feels like being immersed in a rainy forest!

The story is extremely promising, and all the little details and collectibles scattered throughout the map make exploration meaningful…

I recommend this game strictly on the idea of being able to play as a cat, this game needs work!!!!!!

The idea of playing as a cat and having an adventure is probably a dream for 90% of gamer’s out there…..I completely understand everyone’s frustration when it came to playing this game. Here were some of the issues I ran into:

Controlling the cat is just odd, it doesn’t feel like true 360 to turn around. I know I see him in 3rd but I feel like i’m still turning in 1st person….if that makes sense?
