The Legend of Bum-Bo

The Legend of Bum-Bo

Firstly, I do enjoy this game, I received it as a gift from a friend and had an enjoyable time, however, The Legend of Bum-bo was last updated 14 December 2019 and is very unpolished. I hope this game gets updated and its issues are addressed. Note: as of 18/5/2020 the co-creator said this game is being handed off to another team for further work I’m hoping changes occur and then I’ll update this review.

Currently the Legend of Bum-bo feels like an early access game, while it is presented as a finished product. I’m a massive fan of Ed’s other products including Binding of Isaac and it’s dlc’s, and the physical card game (I truly adore the art, asthetic and quotes on the cards). However, buyers should be aware that this product is more flawed and less polished then other Edmund McMillen work’s, and consumers should consider looking at gameplay before purchase to see if it is right for them.

REVIEW UPDATE 20.11.2019

The game received a huge amount of bug fixes and very small QoL addons ( Even doe the sound menu should had been there from the beginning ) and the game started to get more and more enjoyable. It really shows that the devs really care of the game and that they listen to the complains that the community has. Huge Plus!

INITIAL REVIEW 13.20.2019

What can I say about this game? Is sort of mixed, let me tell you why.

Do you enjoy autobattlers but find more fun in longer-form, singleplayer experiences? This may scratch your itch.

A little rough around the edges but this has the potential to be a new genre-defining game.

If you enjoy roguelikes – Slay the Spire, Monster Train, etc - you most likely will enjoy this game

If you enjoy autobattlers – Teamfight Tactics, Dota Autochess – you will most likely enjoy this game

If you enjoy both of these genres – you will undoubtedly enjoy this game.

Just be warned – there is very little tutorial and no hand holding, so it may take you a run or two to understand the MANY systems at play here (and there are a lot of systems). While this makes for a steep ramp, this also makes for a ton of replayability.

As usual steam needs a neutral option.

Auto battler where I don’t have to worry about other people draining the pool of the unit type I want to play is a huge plus. As w/ most of these game it has plenty of types, plenty of items, and this one seems to have an excessive amnt of reroll options.

The bad part of course is the boss system. You have fixed bosses over several regions which you can challenge in any order so you can attempt to avoid bosses that would be a bad matchup for your build type early on. Though I don’t like fixed bosses there is at least some strategy factored into your order of fights.

Aternia: Deep

Aternia: Deep

Aternia: Deep – a successor to immortal genres of roguelike and hack & slash. Take on a role of the Protagonist, imprisoned in an ancient dungeon’s Depths. You are going to have to use all the arsenal of weapons and abilities at your disposal to finally reach the surface and your beautiful homeland, Aternia.

Enemies – mines and dungeon halls, once abandoned, are now inhabited by hungry vicious monsters that do not belong on the surface. Your arrival will not go unnoticed.

Dungeon – multilevel ruins, built by a long dead civilization, and its lost artifacts will tell you the story of the place – if you are able to find them. You can explore the levels deeper, learning how all of this started in the first place. Perhaps, you can even shed some light onto the Protagonist’s own past?

Dangers – monsters are not the only thing dwelling here. Uncontrolled surges of magic change the surroundings and make you follow the ever-changing rules of the dungeon. If you want to get out, that is.

Storyline – Nothing matters more to our hero than reaching his home. Constantly be on the hunt for better gear and spells, for the closer you goal is, the greater the danger.

Crossroads: Lucky Edition

Crossroads: Lucky Edition

The game is skinner-boxed to be addictive enough, but it’s lacking ambiance and good art. The cards' art is okay but the main screen looks like it was drawn by a child, and rarely changes.

The gameplay is pretty much a RPG-ified version of Windows' minesweeper. It’s okay if you have a few hours to kill on a bus trip or something, so it’s probably more adapted to mobile gaming than PC. You spend hours and hours just grinding to be able to beat the level and move on to the next.

No procedural content or anything memorable. Can’t imagine this being a keeper in a PC environment, especially when so many good games exist on steam.

Dungeon No Dungeon is a rogue like Dungeon Crawler game using the art style similar to The Darkest Dungeon but with a way more cartoon style than a realistic one.

This is the first game created by 302 Studio Games who is entering the world of Steam with this game and Boy doe they have their hands full at the moment.

The number of times I’ve had a character one-shot is too many at this point, and it is always one sided. I’ve never one-shot an enemy team except for the ‘wait 3 turns casting’ abilities.

One-shot kills on PCs that you then need to use gold to resurrect, which you only get on successful runs, is bad design unless you’re going to hide micro-payments or premium currency in it later, which is still bad design.

Since they already tried to add a paid DLC in an early access game it doesn’t exactly bode well.

How Metroidvania is it? Low Fit. Jumplord is open and interconnected, but it does not have permanent ability upgrades required for progression.

Curator Review

Nothing creates the feeling of being in an alien world like a game that does things completely different. Jumplord begins and ends with infinite jumping, but it’s more complicated than that.

Light&Dark

Light&Dark

What is this?

Light & Dark is a roguelike platformer. You play as Victoria Bloom, a young girl trapped in an old mansion afflicted by a mysterious darkness. You have to find your way through the dark and face the horrors inside, with only your flashlight to light your path.

The mansion is always covered in complete darkness and randomly generated so each play-through feels different and you never know what might be lurking behind the corner.

A lot of different light sources, tinkering modules and items are hidden throughout the mansion and help you along the way.

What do you do?

The main mechanic of the game is how you control and use light. Your light comes from several different sources. You have your flashlight as your main source of light but you can pick up several different sources such as matches, that you can throw at enemies, firecrackers, that clear darkness, lanterns that keep you safe…

With your light you can clear the darkness to uncover your surroundings, defeat enemies, collect resources, find hidden areas and more. You can also modify your flashlight with tinkering by finding modules that can increase range and radius or deal more damage to enemies.

Who is Victoria Bloom?

Victoria Bloom is, and has always been, a tinkerer. She always had a talent for taking things apart and putting them back together in new and interesting ways. She would spend most of her play time making her gizmos and thingamajigs. Her mother always says she got her quirky talent from her grandfather, the world famous inventor Percival Abernathy Bloom. The once famous inventor now lives in his Old Bloom Mansion on top of Pinewood Hill.

This is coincidentally, where our story begins. With our young Victoria visiting her grandfather at the Old Bloom Mansion on top of Pinewood hill, like she does every winter, only this time things seem different…

Moonfall

Moonfall

With a story reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic Banner Saga, Moonfall’s deceptively simple mechanics make for a fun, evolving challenge. Unfortunately, my kids have hijacked this game from me. They love it, and they don’t give me a turn. Their reviews are below:

Thing 1 - I like how you can craft stuff to help you on the rough terrains.

Thing 2- I like the challenge but if you do like 20 levels and your whole party dies you have to start all over.

Real player with 24.3 hrs in game

Moonfall is a really great indie game, with a simple yet very interesting mechanic. Each turn you can move only one of your companion. To win you will have to optimize their placement and anticipate every action. There are 6 different character types, allowing for variation in play style. During the night you are able to craft items, scoot the surroundings and heal yourself. The game might be tricky near the end but is never frustrating.

My only complaint concern the achievements which doesn’t seem to count toward the “Avg. Game Completion Rate”. But that shouldn’t discourage you to buy the game, especially at that cost.

Steel Dungeon 钢铁地牢

Steel Dungeon 钢铁地牢

The game, while poorly written, felt like it has potential to be fun. Likely this game should have come out in Early Access first, but otherwise I didn’t hate playing it briefly.

The chief idea is that you are driving around in a tank while taking out throngs of enemies. You go from room to room FTL style using a variety of weapons in a twin stick shooter style. It definitely needs some balancing and and likely more things should be explained, but there is room to work around and make this game special.

Real player with 0.6 hrs in game

It’s not a bad game, especially for the low price but the UI graphics are a bit amateur and the English is really bad: “toturial” for tutorial for example. Also it’s not a “FPS” but an overhead third person view of the player (a tank). A HP display as a bar or something would be more useful than showing Hp as numbers.

Deadly Days

Deadly Days

TL;DR: It feels like a beta version of what-could-be-a-flawless-gem-but-is-definitely-not-so-far: a fusion of Atom Zombie Smasher ’s commandos with mortality + more upgrades + field support, while fighting against Infested Planet -like enemies, and is mostly quite well done, so I kept trying to give it a go, but it has major experience-destroying issues outlined at the bottom, which were in my last daily run that just annihilated my motivation. Uninstalled.

Real player with 30.7 hrs in game

There are games which you buy and enjoy every single minute. Then there are games which you get in a bundle but you would never buy it as a standalone. This one is the second option.

For a roguelite it has pretty brutal beginning. You can get disinterested pretty quickly. Once you force yourself to adapt to unintuitive controls and automatic attacks by your survivors - you will soon realize, that there is very little variety in enemies, objectives and (especially) locations.

The difficulty balance and balance overall is all over the place. You either feel powerful or utterly weak the next minute and your run is lost. The game gives too little time for area exploration and the constant zombie level and quantity increase - kind of ruins the fun for me completely.
