198X

198X

Just finished this amazing little game. My total playthrough was just under 4 hours, but that’s just the time you need to play through the game to completion. To ace the minigames and get all the achievements, you’d need to put in double or triple that. I’m not a massive achievement hunter, so I’ll take my 4 hours and bow out gracefully.

Without spoiling this game too much, it’s a story that many of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s know all too well. We were kids at a point where the technology curve was a sheer cliff. Only the minds of kids could comprehend the changes, and the adults were left standing. Those of us who yearned for sci-fi worlds of AI and Robots, space travel, dungeon delving were utterly misunderstood by our parents and told to stop daydreaming… And then came computers.. Suddenly you didn’t just read about it in the comics or (if you were lucky) books… Now you could actually go there! Just a 5 minute tape load, or a 10p inserted into an arcade machine was all that separated you from the mundane world of impending nuclear war, urban decay, hyperinflation and riots. Suddenly you were in another world, escapism at the time when we needed escapism the most. And this game tells that story, through the eyes of someone living through it, experiencing the loneliness of constantly looking out at the horizon and thinking “This can’t be all there is! There must be more!”. A chance walk, a turn, and suddenly you find yourself surrounded by portals into other worlds, and you have a handful of keys to the portals in your pocket.

198X takes an arcade game time capsule from the 1980s and brings it to life through superb pixel art, awesome music, and amazing story-telling. Sure, it might be short overall, with completion time anywhere around 1.5-2 hours estimated, but the experience is quite a blast.

Take a trip down memory lane with very (and I mean very) forgiving retro-style (look, feel, the whole deal) arcade games recreated with so much love and attention found within this title. The game recreates five different styles of games with a really unique and fun gameplay element in each one, so no wonder this game claims to not just be this or that, in its really enticing trailer.

Catovania

Catovania

I have been watching a lot of AVGN and GDQ lately, so I was naturally attracted by the title “Catovania”. I mean, Castlevania, but with cat! What could go wrong?

There are some good things about this game, but the bad outweighs the good. In short, this game pretty much captures a lot of the strengths and weaknesses of the early SNES action games, and even plays like one. As I was playing it, I couldn’t help but imagine I am James Rolfe collecting material for an AVGN episode. I couldn’t even help writing this review AVGN style.

Nice game like the old games on the NES. It’s a pity that is not yet supported gamepad. When using the keyboard, you need to press left shift to make the character run.

Eskimo Bob: Starring Alfonzo

Eskimo Bob: Starring Alfonzo

Good game! but this is a “try and failure” game, i consider is unnecessary the limited lifes, see the GAME OVER screen at least 80 times is boring. The final boss is impossible for a normal person, 3 lifes but you only can use one life, 1 error and bye-bye, really is extremately hard. I personally couldn’t beat the boss, i saw the final on Youtube….

Disclaimer: I helped fund this game via Kickstarter, and have been friends with the creator for the past 18 years.

This game is the perfect example of why we need more options than just “Yes / No” on reviews.

This is a silly action puzzle platformer with tight controls. You control either Eskimo Bob or Alfonzo as they collect all the floating fish on a stage to advance to the next area. Bob can jump higher and farther, and punch blocks below him, while Alfonzo has a stick which lets him attack enemies and destroy blocks in front of him.

Hunt the Muglump

This is a really fun game. My eight year old son really enjoys playing it and begs to get on the computer so he can play it. It has been a great distraction for him during lock down. He especially enjoys tweaking the game settings in custom mode.

I like this game. It’s an ever-changing puzzle adventure that randomizes every time. I’m still working towards the dungeon creator by earning the right achievements, but I enjoy the gameplay. Well-worth the low cost of 5.99.

Good luck Muglump hunters.

First, and quite possibly last, the game is pretty okay for one dollar, it doesn’t support HD resolution and the it only has the most basic of top down shooter game-play and a story that might as well not exist, but hey it’s only a buck and it works i guess, oh and the music is pretty alright too.

Pixel Pileup Party

Pixel Pileup Party

It’s Saturday, 1992. Probably late evening, perhaps 6 or so. You are a little kid, sitting on your bed, wrapped in a blanket with your “Game Kid” handheld device (not backlit) and play your favorite games while your mother brings you some hot cocoa. You don’t know it yet but this is the best life will ever be.

This feeling, the feeling of playing those handheld games back in the day, this is what Pixel Pileup Party is all about. This game collection includes four new “Game Kid” styled games in one package, so that you can feel like a child again. Unless of course that kid never was you, in that case you’ll encounter four great games styled after a 90s retro device. One way or the other, you’ll get some awesome games is what I’m saying.

–————————————————-

About the games:

Chibi Ninja-Kun

The ancient scrolls of the Ninja’s way have been stolen and it is up to you to get them back. Fight your way through dangerous enemies, defeat tough bosses and try not to die out there.

Old school retro platforming action awaits in this tough as nails adventure. Are you Ninja enough to survive?

Donion VS Bad Hombres

Donald the orange onion is furious. Bad Hombres are infiltrating his beautiful wall (the best wall there ever is, so good, winning) thinking that, because he wants them to pay for it, it belongs to them. Foolish vegetables. SAD!

Help Donion get rid of the bad fruit by doing what Donald does best: Bumbling into them and tripping over himself. But beware: Some hombres are strong, yo!

Puzzle KING MAN

The King Man is at it again - but this time for the first time! Again! How exciting! Puzzling! Retroing! Fun for the whole family, as long as you are alone, because this game is single player only!

Puzzle KING MAN? YES! The only game that has ever truly been and shall forever be 100% apolitical!

eXtreme Rider RETRO

Every ten years, a competition is held by the planetary government to find the best speedcycle rider on the planet. Many riders from all around the globe participate to find out who is the most extreme rider of them all.

It’s not a question if you’ll die. It’s about how far you’ll get before the inevitable happens!

Arbitrary list of features in no particular order:

  • Collecting 4 different 8-Bit Retro Handheld styled games

  • Match-3, platformer, endless runner and metroidvania in one package

  • Modern features like colors and game saves (yes, really)

  • 4 shades of green

  • Chiptunes. Who doesn’t love chiptunes

  • Each game has its own shades of green for some reason

  • Unique gameplay experiences for every game

  • All games have hidden graphic modes you can unlock in case yo don’t like green that much

  • eXtreme Rider RETRO has online highscores

Controller Information:

Due to limitations with the engine, some controllers, for example 8bitdo gamepads, may not work properly. There is, unfortunately, nothing I can do about that. Should you have any trouble with your gamepad, maybe try another gamepad or use the keyboard. I apologize for the inconvenience.

SAVAGE: The Shard of Gosen

SAVAGE: The Shard of Gosen

Saw this game a while back, so when it popped up on steam as early access I decided to pick up, AND . . . its good, really good, combat feels smooth, nothing feels too over complicated. Although it does take a bit of time to pick up on the controls. The music is really good, the sound effects are good, the atmosphere is really good also, specially when it rains. Oh this game has a weather system and a day and night cycle btw. Which was a really cool touch I thought. The level design is a little “Crowded” and it might be my only real problem with the game so far, basically you get swarmed by enemies in a way. to many to fight at once etc. This is good in specific cases, like in forts, occupied caves and so on, but in the forests it gets a bit strange, kinda out of place idk, just my opinion. either way I look forward to the finished game and hope more people find it as it deserves attention i think.

I picked this game up on sale for about half off, so I won’t return it or anything, but I cannot recommend anyone else purchase it. I don’t want to disparage the dev, but there’s about nothing here. It’s about 15% of an SNES game at this point, and those games were pretty vapid as-is. There’d be a lot of promise if this was early access with only about a month under it’s belt. But this game has been been around for 6-7 years (over 2 years in EA on Steam). The dev seems to be active in doing updates, but I fear scope creep has handicapped his efforts.

Slightly Magic - 8bit Legacy Edition

Slightly Magic - 8bit Legacy Edition

Absolutely fantastic game, great idea on the DLC, and the history, at 40 years old, I feel like I’m very young again. Especially with autumn approaching, and the night’s drawing in. My kids will love this, they love the new pseudo 8bit games too, e.g. Undertale, which area great, but this is a classic. And with author commentary, which is just superb! Really going to enjoy playing and finishing this game during stopTober ;-)

Stereo Aereo

Stereo Aereo

Stereo Aereo is a Guitar Hero ripoff where you control a car that has to skip between lanes of traffic (making it appear more like an endless runner), which somehow is how the developers think music is made.

It’s not very expensive and it plays okay (although the menu is almost impossible to navigate if you own a HOTAS or racing wheel because the devs didn’t bother testing the game on PC). The problem is that it’s just not as good as Guitar Hero, or any other music/rhythm game. So just play one of those if that’s your thing.

Real player with 35.3 hrs in game

So if you’re into games like guitar hero or rock band then you will more than likely enjoy this, it’s just a lot smaller.

It’s not an amazing masterpiece but it’s a simple easy to play indie arcade game, it challenges your reaction skills and puts your rage meter to the test, but it is fun with a cool 80s soundtrack that keeps you rocking.

Graphics

No problems graphics wise, the cutscenes are cartoony and the gameplay looks great and all blend in nicely together to give it that retro space look from the 80s
