Retrowave

Retrowave

What a super chill game. :) I love its simplicity and it captures the retrowave aesthetic really nicely. This is 1980s personified. You can also unlock a Tesla Cybertruck in the game. I’m dead. ✖‿✖

I really do love the synthwave genre sooo YEA, good sh*t. They really captured the feel by making your screen look like a VHS being played on a CRT TV which is cool, ya know. Sooo, you basically just drive straight in a carefully crafted synthwave environment avoiding cars when you can. That’s all there is to it. Once you get decent at it, you can switch your brain into autopilot and just 𝕧 𝕚 𝕓 𝕖 out. The music is really wow.

Updated from Negative to Postive

As of Update 10 the huge pop in issue has been fixed with the inclusion of “viewing distance” option.

To be clear, the pop in IS still there, but it no longer hinders gameplay & is now only slightly noticeable when using some of the faster cars in the 3rd person or cockpit views.

The music no longer cuts out after you crash, but does cut off for a second if you restart the level.

Full controller support has also been added now too, which pretty much goes hand in hand with a game like this.

Nimbus

Nimbus

Nimbus is a lot of fun and very pretty, and it’s basically just as challenging as you want it to be. There are a lot of optional levels, you can configure how you want the checkpoints to work, and your time records don’t unlock any content or anything so it doesn’t matter if you don’t care about trying to accomplish them.

However…

If you are interested in time records, be aware that Nimbus has one enormous bug: it bases its records on how much time elapses in the real world between the beginning and the end of the level, rather than how many game ticks pass in that time. So depending on how powerful your computer is, falling through the same vertical space without pressing any keys may take you anywhere from 4 seconds to 30 or more. Lowering your resolution and turning off graphical effects can help with this on some of the levels, but these are not adjustments you should be forced to make to fix a gameplay issue.

Its most likely the same broom named “Nimbus 2000” series used in quidditch from harry potter volume that gave developers the idea and also the name. Its more like a small broom, only not like broom but just a jetpack enabled cute thing that we need to land right through a racing track to proceed to next stage. As far as the game is concerned, seriously, this is one of the hardest one I played. Not only it is quite daunting and sometimes irritating to maneuver that jetpack, it immediately loses power after few seconds of flying across, you need to use environment like cannon, spring mats etc. to refuel the “Whatever nimbus thing we control in the game”. Some levels are incredibly difficult and playing on the hard setting in the hope of reaching completion, that seriously requires some super gaming powers but those levels are next to impossible to get done. Another thing that adds to the game difficulty, Left arrow moves nimbus towards right, right arrow towards left, up arrow to down and down arrow to up, and you have to re-wire your brain to think and apply illogically just to get that satisfaction of moving across worlds. Otherwise, anyone could easily give up. Seriously, it requires some world-war 2 veteran war-fighter level skills for this game and don’t dare to fall for its cuteness, its hard.

Jumps

Jumps

I feel like I should leave a review as I’ve spent a ton of time playing this game. Jumps is a really simple, fun and relaxing game. It’s the perfect level of difficulty; You’ll spend a little while trying to figure out how to complete certain levels, but you most likely won’t get absurdly frustrated. I beat the game rather quickly, but it’s also a great game for speedrunning if you’re into that. Most of my time in the game has just been spent replaying all the levels while I listen to a podcast or watch a stream on my second monitor, because once you learn the levels it’s really relaxing casually running through all of them. I really hope to see more maps added (I would most definitely pay for DLC) and possibly getting rid of the sideways-running speed glitch if possible. This game is easily the best value in regards to playtime-to-money and I can’t recommend it enough if you’re interested in a simple, fun game with a slight challenge!

Definitely an underrated gem… Searched the Steam store for a fun little first person platformer and lo-and-behold, there was Jumps.

Quirky soundtrack, challenging but fair levels, fun mechanics that are introduced very smoothly, all integrated into 6 vibrant, bright, yet very different “worlds”! This game is really fun and can act as either a quick little timewaster or a grind to shave a few hundred milliseconds off your PB.

My only complaint with Jumps is that it’s quite short; the game’s mechanics has lots of potential, but isn’t really expanded upon in the levels. It’s incredibly cheap, however, so that’s not too much of an issue!

Inertial Drift

Inertial Drift

Inertial Drift is easily one of the best racing games I’ve ever played. If you like racers, this game might just become your new favorite.I’ve been looking for a game to replace OutRun 2. I love that game, and there are a lot of reasons Inertial Drift are able to rival that game- easily. Inertial Drift rocks. The gameplay is amazing. The two-stick controls deliver everything it promises to and more- there’s hundreds of hours of potential here. Each car handles uniquely, and the story mode used as a medium to unlock these works. It’s not the next Final Fantasy VI, but the story is good enough to satisfy the need as a gameplay facet. I even liked it. The music and camera work within the game create the perfect feeling of dynamics, and you’ll sit down glued to the game hours at a time. The game is even more pretty when you play, than when you watch it. Like, as soon as you hold this game in your hands and play, you’ll be chuckling with joy. Its so fun.Nothing’s perfect though, and there are some minor issues with the game. I’m writing this review on the first patch, close to release. There’s a couple glitches to be sorted out, but patches are coming through well. The music is awesome, but there aren’t a ton of options. You’ll never get tired of it looping soothingly in the BG, but more options could be sweet. Also, cars don’t collide (at least not in the normal story mode) so passing an opponent isn’t a tactical epic. But you get to focus on making the best lap times on the best lines- so if that’s your cup of tea, its either there or its not.Otherwise? Play this game. The demo will hook you. Every moment is historic racing awesomeness. See you on the road.

Now, it should be said at first, that this game isnt a traditional racing game. its a time trialling game, along the lines of dirt rally or trackmania, where its less about wheel to wheel racing and more about perfecting your racing line. if thats not what you want, you might want to think a little harder about getting this.for those who DO enjoy time trialling though, i highly suggest you pick this up. the control scheme alone could easily carry this game, allowing a level of precision i dont think ive ever seen in another driving game. coupled with great track design, lots of very individual cars, simplistic but great looking graphics, the sense of speed and the games way of encouraging you to just get better and better and better by always showing you the next player on the leaderboards to beat makes this one of my favorite racing games yet.my only complaints really are a… “lack” of tracks - theres ten in total, all available in reverse as well. while this is enough for now, it might get a little stale later on. additional tracks, maybe in a dlc, would be very welcome - the rather dim lighting, which can make tracks unpredictable if you play them for the first time, although thats not a problem the more experience you get, and… while not really a complaint, it certainly is a bit annoying that there is no eurobeat in this game. the game’s soundtrack isnt bad, quite good actually, but… its a shame the game doesnt have it….oh, and the “story” is quite bad. the events themselves are fine, but the writing is awful. then again, its a racing game, so who cares about the story.tldrtime trials, no racing heregreat controlsgreat vehicle varietypretty graphicsgreat sense of speedvery rewardingonly minor complaints…get this game, it be good.

Lonely Mountains: Downhill

Lonely Mountains: Downhill

So, this is that kind of game where it looks really cool, but you’re kinda on the fence about it… will it turn out to be really fun, or is it one of those that looks cool but ends up being a dud? Then you check the reviews and find out all kinds of stuff about the camera angle, etc. If you’re like me, you’ll sit on the fence about it for a while, wondering… will it be worth it? Or am I going to be disappointed?

Verdict: Totally worth it. I was actually shocked and ended up REALLY loving it. It’s one of those kind of games where you think, “Ok… got a few minutes to kill… I’ll run a couple trails, then get back to sweeping the floors.” Five or ten minutes later, you check the time and it has been an hour and a half.

Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.

|

Is this game a masterpiece? Nope, but this doesn’t prevent me having a ton of fun with it.

It is a bicycle downhill racing game. Learning it is as easy as the real thing, just sit on the bike, pedal, steer left/right, brake. Everyone can ride in seconds. Riding is easy, but the problem starts when you race. Downhill. One mistake and you crash over a rock, against a tree, down a canyon… or just along the path, your bike on your head and blood squirting everywhere. Hehe.

REVIEW

Skydrift is a hidden-gem of an combat-racer game involving what feel like go-kart versions of airplanes. It reminds me of Diddy Kong Racing from back in the day, (which was like Mario Kart but with planes). The game is a lot of fun, especially in multiplayer. If you’re looking for some simple-pleasure arcade action, you probably want to check this out.

Overall Gameplay Thoughts

SkyDrift is a great looking, fast action, arcade racing game. It’s chaotic, intense and skillful. Single player offers plenty of content and planes to choose from. It offers beautiful vistas of places to fly through and the world feels very organic and alive. It reminds me of Mario Kart mixed with Diddy Kong Racing. The three different modes of play, Power, Speed and Survival, keep it interesting if you want to change it up. Power is where you have the ability to use powerups. Speed takes powerups out and survival is about making it the longest. There’s a good amount of powerups, all sorts of different planes to choose from and a decent amount of racing tracks to chew on. The various different types of planes vary from flighty and twitchy, to heavy and slow but still remain balanced enough for engaging races everytime. The AI gets lots of help with rubberbanding and teleporting but it’s still possible to beat it. It’s just really aggravating. The game is definitely best played against others though. There’s a good amount of variety for such a small budgeted game.

Classic Racers

Classic Racers

Classic Racers is an hidden gem in a sea of indie racing games. Thanks to the dev I could try it for free because became an F2p.

What is Classic Racers?

The purpose in game is like trackmania: beat your enemy time. Instead of trackmania, here you can only drive classic cars in classic tracks. If you search for a further challenge, the global leaderboard is for you. Moreover, in the leaderboard there aren’t time cheater so you could have an healthy challenge.

Cars

We can choose between 9 model of cars. Three categories from the less powerful to the old f1 car. (All the cars are clones and not with original logo). We can find very rare cars like the abarth 1000 barchetta or some LeMans Porsche.

Welcome drivers, we have fallen into a time-warp and landed back in the time of classic racing. You will be starting with slower cars and building up to the formula racers as you level up. The title is a time attack racer, you do not have any competition on the track; it is you and the open air, with only time to beat if you are to progress past the tracks. With tracks of various designs and difficulty, you’re sure to spend many hours mastering them all! With straightways and hairpin curves, the tracks will challenge you to make it in time to beat the clock - miss it by even a fraction of a second and it’s redo the track!

Dead End Road

Dead End Road

This is the most unfair and exhausting game I have ever experienced. Games such as “Mario/Sonic Unfair, Cat Mario, and the Unfair Platformer,” which are designed to infuriate the player by killing them over and over again, at least have the decency to keep the obstacles consistent so that trial and error is actually productive and rewarding. This game however has ways of giving you a “Game Over” that no amount of experience could ever prepare you for.

Dead End Road has an amazing premise for a horror game: make a wish, find a book a bell and a candle, and bring them to the end to receive your wish. On your way to the end you will face a multitude of obstacles that could damage your car, including other vehicles who can’t decide whether they are driving on a US or UK road and won’t break or swerve to save their own lives, causing instant death to the player.

Real player with 18.1 hrs in game

You perform a ritual and must complete it by bringing three items to an elderly lady at Dead End Road in order to have a wish granted to you. Sounds simple enough, except you are constantly haunted by paranormal and demonic forces beyond your comprehension on the way there. That’s not your only obstacle on the road: you must also deal with pigeons, roadkill, neatly stacked boxes in the middle of the road, Donkey Kong chucking garbage cans at your car, traffic drivers who obey no rule as to which side of the road to drive on, and many more.

WOW! What a rush!

This game is AMAZINGLY good, like the VR version of Mirror’s Edge in many ways. The way the grabbing system works is a little less realistic but its very intuitive for doing super-fast speed hops from one surface to another. Speed builds up as you successfully hop multiple times and when coupled with surfaces that can effect the way you move it can allow you to build yourself up and .. just .. FLY!

The level design is also something to be admired. Each level has a certain amount of “Geoms” you have to collect which make for cool challenge points requiring you to really observe the level and use the terrain in many fun and interest ways in order to collect them. There is also a Hidden “geom” in each level which are SO rewarding to find and often very challenging to reach.

They weren’t kidding in the trailer when they put that big, gratuitous FREEDOM. OF. MOVEMENT.

Seriously, I feel more free playing this game than in any other VR game, and I get around pretty well. It feels somewhere between TF2 jump maps and Climbey, with the aesthetic of Mirror’s Edge.

To The Top trades a lack of accuracy in technical climbing for an exhilarating, leaping, spider man crossed with the hulk crossed with Mirror’s Edge experience. You run across the ground, fling yourself into the air, swing from buildings, and glide across roofs. It’s a feeling I’ve been chasing in skill-based movement games since I started to get the itch for this kind of thing. Already set a WR on a map, I’m ready to tackle more!
