Archimedes

Archimedes

I don’t do reviews often, but I figured I would chime in on Archimedes.. I just finished it a few mins ago, and there are a lot of things I like about it and a few things I think could have been done a bit better..

I really like the overall feel of the game, and having actually used Windows since 3.0 in the early 90’s I can say this has the “feel” of Windows 95. Some people have complained about the real world ties like Mediafire, email, youtube, Google Maps (which I never could get the right coordinates with.. I had to get them from Bing Maps, and PLEASE do not consider that an endorsement of Bing, as I loathe it as a search engine..) I actually like that you have to go outside the game for resources, but I think they should all be on a host controlled by the game devs.. The game files will eventually get taken down and someone might put malicious files for people to find.. This way is far too open to external abuse. Also, the Mediafire site attempted to force me into dowloading one of the many “PC Optimizer” trojans out there.. That is just really unacceptable.

I’m recommending this game, although there are a few things I really don’t like. (I’ll try and make this as vague as possible so there are no spoilers)

What I do like:

It’s a hellavalot better than the shit that was “Her Story”

It’s only $2.99, but as of now it is in a bundle

The game is different. I’ve not played anything exactly like it before. The best game comparison I can make would be

! “Pony Island.” It also reminds me of the movie,

! “The Thing.”

It’s short (not a bad thing in this case)

Layers of Fear 2

Layers of Fear 2

Layers of Fear 2 is a surreal psychological horror adventure in the typical “Bloober Team” style. You follow a meandering, but ultimately linear path through surreal and disorienting environments that change unpredictably, you solve occasional puzzles, and you collect items and notes that tell a fascinating, dark story.

This story is, in my opinion, the strongest point of the game. You start playing as an actor, hired by a mysterious director to star in a movie that is getting shot on a cruise liner in the early 20th century. The director is known for unusual methods of building his characters, and he believes that only you are “broken enough” to really “become” the character he envisions. There is also a subplot of what appears to be two children roleplaying a pirate adventure. However, both plots turn much darker while at the same time the environment unravels around you, and not everything is as it seems. I found the story captivating and well-written, and the voice-acting excellent. While I found some gameplay elements rather annoying (see below), it was the story that made me continue and enjoy the game.

I am not sure what all the negative reviews are about, other than maybe people not reading the description of the game, or just… expecting things that weren’t even promised?? I don’t know - I almost didn’t buy the game because of some of the reviews - but I nabbed this on sale, and I REGRET NOTHING!

This is not a direct sequel to Layers of Fear. It is it’s own stand-alone game, AND to boot, the story line is perfectly clear if you’re not brain dead, or at least payed SOME attention in High School English Class.

I wasn’t too sure about this game at first. I thought it was just going to be a sham. But boy was I wrong. After playing this game, I’ve been having trouble sleeping: Seeing things out of the corner of my eyes, you know, the usual stereotypes of any horror movie. But this game has changed me. It’s gnawing at my sanity every day, little by little. I’m reaching my peak, and I don’t know how much more I can take… I never knew I was afraid of hammers, and this game has opened my eyes. I cant get the images of hammers out of my head. This game has ruined me, I am more paranoid than ever. My family suspects that there is something wrong with me, but I try to convince them otherwise. most of the time it works, but they are slowly catching on. My father tries telling me that I should get a hobby, or to be active more. I cant though.. everything I turn to just reminds me of hammers. I’m lost, and I don’t know what else to do. I went to see a doctor the other week, and they said that I have schizophrenia. I’m on medication, and it keeps the hammers at bay for the most part. I will never be the same again, and its all because of this game. Play this game if you want, just know that there could be risks, because I didn’t, and now i’m facing the consequences.

After the demo I couldn’t wait for the first chapter. As a fan of mysteries this hit the right spot for me.

The game never felt stale (as many horror/puzzle games can be at times), interesting narrative, amazing story/writing. First playthrough was with constant shivers in my spine. I was not a big horror game fan but this game is starting to maybe change my perspective of the genre.

Game felt much more smoother than the demo, for example the walking and looking around with the mouse with motion blur turned on (which I usually turn off in games because it’s rarely done right) felt very snappy and responsive, in simple words it’s done right. Overall, the optimization is pristine. The fact that it was made with no budget and only 2 friends, it’s amazing. The amount of work, time and commitment must have been huge!

Game could use some good polishing especially with it’s menu and game pad support would make later parts of Sharp much easier.

Although nowhere near as solid as similar titles like Silver Chains, Sharp’s four hours is worth the elbow-grease but sadly not its asking retail.

Sharp is not just another foreign walking simulator remixing assets as there is some sophistication to it’s game play and efforts in presentation and voice-acting but Sharp also isn’t enjoying the Playstation 2 era it replicates where low calibur productions easily barked up eBay bids beyond the fifty dollar mark.

Oh man Ive been waiting for this game to come out!

Denial is the epitome of an indie game, its obviously a labor of love from a small team.

I was creeped out wandering the halls, engaged in the story, and even though its a short game (finished it in a bit less than 2 hours) I feel its definitelly worth its price.

Pros:

Usually games like these are littered with bugs, I didnt encounter a single one.

Level design is beautiful.

Cheap price

Scary

Story driven and shrouded in mystery

Cons:

As expected from a small indie team, its short.

Lighthouse of Madness

Lighthouse of Madness

Some secrets are older than humankind. Others are so obscure that would turn crazy even the most sane man. Are you ready to face what lies ahead?

You are Dorian Cannon, a lighthouse keeper responsible for repairing and implementing new autonomous systems in old lighthouses. During one of your expeditions, you’re tasked to bring the lighthouse keepers back to the continent. But when you arrive at the location, you realize that something isn’t right.

Inspired by the Lovecraftian mythology, suspense and horror are in your way. How do you get to the lighthouse? What was in that mine? And what could have happened to the other lighthouse keepers? The island holds more secrets that you can imagine.

Equipped with your flashlight and a switchblade, explore the island, investigate the lighthouse, solve the puzzles that block your way to new areas and try to not go insane in this mysterious journey.

Lost Roads

Given this game free, I’d like to say it is a very short but scary game.

I enjoyed the mood set for the game, although I would suggest including a story line to the game and be able to show what is needed to do for the hints they give you in game. The game is a bit confusing at first, but It does give a scare.

It is your typical horror game where the room changes as you move from one area to another area with subtle differences.

I cannot really recommend the game as it is too short for the price. If I did not finish the room part with the doors by trial and error id be done in about 5 minutes. It is a nice project but lacks content unfortunately.

What do you hear?? Yanny vs Laurel

You know that video that was making rounds on Facebook and other social media platforms? This is exactly what this is.

A looping Yanny/Laurel sound with a slider… That’s it. The whole game.

Ok guys I’m gonna go fast here ‘cos this game actually is composed of a single screen and on the other side I don’t even know how many months or so it will stay on the store and as far as I know reviews get removed too so..

I have to admit that I did not know anything before playing this shovelware for what regards Yanny and Laurel. I had to Google it and I found tons of Italian websites back from the beginning of 2018 talking about this crap.

Basically it seems that it’s a simple acoustic illusion - some people hear laurel and some people hear yanny, pronounced from an English speaker of course.

_dive

_dive

_Dive is a progressive experience that demands you to logically use your eyes, ears and respond to a test before being granted entry to a hypothetical VR experience. For those who don’t enjoy games like The Stanley Parable you’re better off avoiding this because it offers over 5 minutes+ of repetition before any serious changes start to happen and by then anyone who is after a quick fix brain switchoff will have given up on this within those 5 minutes

The controls and visuals are simplistic, either arrow keys or WASD to move alongside Left mouse or Spacebar/Return key for interactions while the graphics are an intense almost hospital-like whiteness in the early stages of the game with a shining white path to follow towards screens that feature a 2 buttoned console to make choices from.

I like minimalistic games. I like psychological games. _dive consist of both things I like so I was happy to mark it.

Pros:

  • visual style;

  • moral is not that bad;

  • well-optimized.

Cons:

  • degree of madness for me was not enough. Of course, few things can compare to Layers of Fear’s madness, I don’t ask so much. But anyway when you’re trying to make psychological horror, you should make things in a way that will blow up gamers’ brains.
