Turbo Pug

Turbo Pug

It’s a pug runner. You collect pug coins to unlock new pugs (and cats). That is all.

  • Graphics: Meh

Nothing eye-catching at all here really. SNES-like platform graphics. It fits the gameplay

  • Sound: Yay

I like the random barks and meows. The music is unobtrusive and kinda upbeat.

  • Gameplay: Meh

It’s a runner with nothing other to do than collect pug coins and dodge obstacles. No gamepad support, the only key you use will be the spacebar. You can unlock different characters to run with but it’s not clear how you unlock them. Or maybe I just wasn’t paying attention. That’s likely.

Over the years I’ve played a dozen iterations of screenscrolling games and their predecessors. I’ve played twenty odd games from Mario Brothers to Super Smash Brothers. I’ve gotten quite good at them, too. I’ve won the World Cup, the Champions League, the Premiership, the Championship, League One, Serie A, La Liga, the Bundesliga, and most importantly, the Romanian Second Division. By this point in the last game I played, I thought I was done. An assortment of minor annoyances and disappointments with Luigi’s Mansion left me too frustrated to continue.

This is by far one of my favorite games, both from an RPGMaker game type standpoint, and games in general. The story and characters are crafted with such love, and all characters have their own story to tell. None of the people you get to know are unimportant, and by the end, i’m sure you’ll love at least one of the characters, if not all of them. The story is so well done, you can tell miwashiba put a lot of thought into the creation of such a world.

Alice_mare is a bit of a classic game for me when thinking about RPGMaker type games, it was one of the first few I played when RPGMaker games blew up about 4 years ago. And it still holds up to this day. Playing through all the endings, getting all the acheivments, I had fun all over again.

Alice in Wonderland… a tale we all know - a tale that’s been often a motive in many different forms of entertainment and never gets too old or too boring.

This time you will experience a little more creepy take on that tale - and to be fair, I think AliceMare has lots of its own story to tell and the old fairytale was more inspiration than a solid theme. You will still see a cat, and a rabbit, and you will still travel to world possible only in your imagination… or rather, your nightmares. Yet the reasoning behind it, and what background every character has- that’s a completely new story.

Iconoclasts

Iconoclasts

Iconoclasts is a 2D Metroidvania platformer about Robin, an outcast mechanic who, by choosing her own job rather than doing what the church assigns her to do, has become a wanted outlaw. But greater things are afoot, and the world itself seems to be shaking beneath your feet…

This game’s story is odd. The premise of the story seems strange, but the game quickly pulls you into the strange world. The One Concern is a military-religious-scientific organization that basically serves as the world government. Led by Mother and her agents, people with seemingly magical powers and supernatural resilience, these people praise Him. This seems like a fairly standard “evil church organization” plot, but in truth, it’s anything but; the One Concern is much more than some sort of bizarre cult, and many of its most important members clearly don’t believe in the benevolence of their god, and have other tasks on their mind.

Many Platventures have a focus on exploring, gaining upgrades, and using those upgrades to reach new areas. This one, however, focuses a lot more on story, as there are very few mobility upgrades. As such, areas will be inaccessible for story reasons, rather than mechanical reasons, but it’s never obnoxious about it; it’s smart enough to pace the story in such a way that you never reach something inaccessible before the story concludes. Which of the 2 styles is better is just a matter of personal preference, but I think that it works pretty well here. Of course, the strength of something like this is carried at least partially by its story and its characters, and while the story is excellent, the characters are a few hits, a lot of misses, and a surprising number of grazes.

Replica

Replica

Replica tries to mix its serious statements about totalitarian government, the balance of personal privacy versus national security, and omniprescent data tracking with fart jokes and sicc references to various indie games and The Matrix. The tonal whiplash is enormous and the weak writing does not help. Seriously, your Orwellian jailor cannot be more blatantly reprehensible. To say the least, while the topics of this game continue to be relevant to modern society, and the core messages this game tries to impart are certainly reasonable, everything said here has been said better elsewhere.

Replica is a very simplistic graphics novel game. It has charming pixel art and some interesting concepts. The game is pretty short and interesting. You’re going through someone’s phone who is a suspect in a terrorist attack and you must decode the phone’s passwords and gather clues and send them to “homeland security”.

Graphics:

The game has very simplistic pixel art where all you see is a hand holding a phone and the screen of the phone is your gameplay area. The background is black and white. This makes a very unique graphical experience and in my opinion it was quite nice looking. The game is locked at 60 FPS. It doesn’t really matter in this type of game but there were no frame drops.

Beat Cop

Beat Cop

In Beat Cop’s trailer we see Kojak, Columbo, Magnum & Miami Vice… We’re in the 80’s!

But none of that, nor Sledge Hammer himself, you are Jack Kelly, a NYPD detective who has been demoted to street police after a confusing robbery of a senator’s house…

You have 3 weeks to solve the case while you fulfill your role as a street cop.

From where I start? For God’s sake, what a 3 weeks! What a street!

This game is a rare mixture, gameplay is very original. We are talking about an adventure with retro graphics where decisions matter, with a main story and daily secondary missions every day of the 3 weeks that at most will last the game (21 days) full of jokes, very funny! But it’s also a time and resource management game. As if that weren’t enough, there is also a reputation system with different factions and many different endings. All at rhythm of small (only 4 tracks) but exquisite soundtrack set in the 80’s. An explosive cocktail!

Warning: You cannot be a “good cop” throughout the whole game

Beat Cop is somewhere in the middle for me, but below the margin. I think I actually enjoyed the gameplay and visual/audio style the most, while the main storyline, the dialogue, and your “freedom” with choices are not that great.

The game focuses way too much on over-the-top dark humor to a point where it gets annoying, especially at the beginning of each day where you listen to fellow cops repeat the same cliche, one-dimensional, arrogant personality rants.

Gods Will Be Watching

Gods Will Be Watching

I was a backer of this project on Indiegogo back in 2013, and while the final product is not at all what I was expecting (i.e. it’s not even an adventure game), I really, really love it.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS THIS GAME?

I think Gods' has been underappreciated and unfairly reviewed simply because it poorly manages our expectations. I want to emphasise that this is a resource management endurance strategy. You don’t walk around freely, examine things, pick up or combine items. There’s no inventory. There’s no traditional adventure game puzzles. Again, it’s not an adventure game. It’s just not.

[Spoilers]

Gods Will Be Watching, contrary to what one might assume from any game described as a point-and-click, is not a point-and-click adventure. The first trailer on the GWBW Steam page makes very clear with the word thriller following point-and-click that the game is not in the same genre as games such as Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle. The game is more accurately described, though, as a point and click thriller in which you strategically manage various resources from level to level.

I grabbed this game for only 40 cents….. Let me just tell you it is very fun. It took me around 10 minutes to finish it but its endless so you can keep on going. I liked it very much and do recommend it for its prize!

Decent and fun little time waster for about 30 minutes, although be warned that there aren’t actually 40 pre set levels- it’s more like 12-15 preset levels randomized into make 40 levels and each playthrough will be different. Grab on a sale.

Pretty fun little puzzle type game here…it’s tough but fair, although I prefer the side scrolling platforming of the first game. Wish it had more achievements but not gonna complain.

This is a shoot ‘em up for us people who suck at shoot ‘em ups, and I enjoyed playing it. It takes maybe half an hour to complete, so the game is short. It is also cheap, so the price is adequate.

Recommended to anyone who can enjoy a casual round of blasting formations of flying enemies. Not recommended for people who are good at shoot ‘em ups, this game won’t challenge them at all.
