Yuki Onna | 雪女
Yuki Onna is another great PS1 inspired title from Chillas Art, and fixed all the major problems I had with Aka Manto.
The sole reason why I am not able to recommend it in its current state, is because of a bug/glitch I encountered, which was over half of the time the reason why I lost my progress. If I decided to run any stairs up from the Yuki Onna, I found myself stuck on the stairs, what seems like a texture glitch. The Yuki Onna somehow clips into me, making it impossible to move anywhere. The same happens once she is in her second form. If she gets too close, or I try to run past her, I get stuck inside her, unable to move yet again. My own failure is acceptable, but this makes it beyond frustrating.

This game is really good. You explore what appears to be an abandoned onsen trying to rescue three children who’ve been kidnapped by Yuki Onna, and if she sees you, then she’ll chase you down and freeze you until you die. It has PS1-style graphics that are very-well suited for this type of game; the low fidelity of the models and textures combine well with the dark, claustrophobic setting for a surreal and very eerie effect. Yuki Onna herself is relatively scary the first couple times you see her, but as she continues appearing you eventually get desensitized to the scare, and since the game doesn’t have any other spooky tricks, don’t expect to be shivering in fear the whole time. There are also a couple jokes, just enough to keep the game from being too dour without spoiling the atmosphere.

Aka Manto | 赤マント
Aka Manto joins this trend of stealth horror games with a VCR look yet offering enjoyable even if short content.
Minor spoilers ahead.
It’s a hard game featuring permadeath but difficulty escalates according to the number of items you’ve found changing the behaviour of Aka Manto. At first it’ll have a harder time spotting you, first making a sound for a few seconds before chasing you, but by the end it’ll ambush you and teleport so often it’ll feel like there are more than one. At the moment of writing this review nobody has made a guide so not sure if other events affect it, like the school bell that sounds from time to time.

TL;DR
This game was gifted to me by a good friend of mine. Had it not been gifted, I would have bought it myself the day after. Aka Manto | 赤マント is based on the Japanese urban legend where there is a spirit who wanders bathrooms asking which paper you prefer (It’s best to ignore it) Here’s the TL;DR List.
-
There’s no soundtrack
-
The controls are basic (You won’t be told this but inventory is TAB)
-
there’s tonnes of puzzle
-
Different kind of graphics
-
High spooks.

Corpse Party: Book of Shadows
I’ve finally achieved 100% completion, so it’s time to give an honest no-spoiler review for Corpse Party: Book of Shadows.
This game was very different from its predecessor. Corpse Party: Book of Shadows plays like a visual novel with a point and click adventure style of game play. At first, it took some getting used to since the first game was an RPG Horror game, but thankfully it didn’t take too long. The more chapters I played and the more I explored within said chapters, the more I began to realize this game’s change in game play was likely done on purpose. After all, looking back on all of it, this style definitely better fit the narrative Makoto Kedouin (creator of Corpse Party) was trying to show this time around. Allow me to explain.

Okay so, a little backstory.
I’ve played Corpse Party as a general series since the Back to School edition came out a few years ago on the 3DS.
Read: Not that long.
However, I adore this series. I used the PSP version of this game, Book of Shadows, to help me practice my Japanese when I was in college. I know– weird flex, but okay. It was something I could get into, so I focused more on what I was reading. Perhaps because of that, BoS happens to be one of my favorite games in this series. I love the extra care taken with each level, the Darkening mechanic, and the backstory that kind of fills in some gaps from the original while also creating a new timeline of events that eventually proceed into the plot of Blood Drive, which comes after this one.

Palmyra Orphanage
Palmyra Orphanage was a good indie horror game, but it had its glaring issues. There were a multitude of bugs including graphical, focusing and AI. The game started very strong and was really awesome and scary for the first half of my experience, but after completing the game and witnessing all of its issues and becoming desensitized to the game itself, I was a little bit disappointed.
The story was good, I at least felt like there was a reason for us to be in this nightmare because it made sense to me. The game looked great and ran phenomenally on my system, but then I started to notice right off the bat that it had inconsistent lighting issues. Why should a room get darker as I walk in with a lighter equipped? It’s brighter from the outside but when a light source moves into it, the room gets darker? It’s like pointing a flashlight at a far wall, but as you move closer to it, it gets dimmer instead of brighter. While this added some tense moments to the game just entering new rooms, I’m not sure if it was intentional or not; if it was, it’s stupid and doesn’t make any sense. If it wasn’t, then it’s a bug or something.

I’m always on the hunt for a hidden gem in the wasteland that is indie horror. Palmyra Orphanage might not be the gem, but at $6, it’s absolutely loads better than a lot of other horror games that ask for way more than that.
Pros:
-
Looks pretty decent. Textures and lightning effects are pretty solid.
-
Pretty good spoops. Doesn’t over do the horror elements. Even though some jumpscares were predictable, I admittedly still got got. Overall, the horror factor didn’t try too hard which is great.

Cave of Illusions
A very interesting and compelling game that drives you towards an unsettling reality hidden within a labyrinth of distorted perspectives.
I found the game to be thoroughly enjoyable; from Lesley’s compulsive need to find the truth, coupled with her resolute and almost remorseful fury, to the wickedly playful nature of the realms' puzzles and games of hide and seek, this game offers a special brand of growing dread akin to a waking nightmare.
The storyline itself calls to mind older, almost Grimm Fairy Tale style fears. The sense of Wicked fair-folk and the rising dread of what it means to be “Missing.” There is a very strong sense of dread and almost inescapability, like you’re a mouse slowly creeping down the throat of a spiraling serpent.

This is a solid indie horror game that is rough around the edges but has enough creativity, love and original ideas put into it to be a cool and memorable experience.
The game’s narrative does a very good job at framing the events in mystery and rational uncertainty, which I feel is often missing from supernatural fiction. This story is a lot about reality and perception of reality and the game doesn’t slack at tackling this thematic point. The protagonist grapples with her understanding of events, past and present and it makes it more intriguing, spooky and satisfying. There is also just enough of grounding in reality, and the emotional layers enrich the substance of the game.

Clown Nightmare, Satan’s Joke
A straightforward FPS. It’s worth the $3 and if you’ve seen the movie or some of the others that are put out by Mark, Jerry, Tucky, and the others, it’s worth even more because you’ll appreciate the inside jokes, the references, and the cameos.

Clown Nightmare, Satan’s Joke may be a gameguru creation, but there’s some obvious care put into this title. It also acts as a companion to the indie horror film Clown Nightmare (which, no, I did not see prior to playing this game). It also lasts about the length of an average movie at a respectable budget price.
Honestly, I enjoued my time with the game. It may not look like anything too amazing, but it’s put together well with a fairly casual difficulty. Yes, towards the end of my time with the game I started griping that it isn’t over yet (essentially fakeout endings) and it could have been cut down a bit. The thing is, though, that I couldn’t stop playing and just wanted to reach the end to see how things turn out.

Exploring Cliff’s last moments of sorrow and despair, Paul Carson finds himself at the edge of his sanity, and facing his fears will be the only way to maintain his lucidity.
Evil Park
Good creepy atmosphere. I was enjoying this game until I realized there was no option to save your progress. So what that means is, no matter how far you get you can’t save your current progress and if you die you have to start the entire game over. Guess this will be put on the back burner along with a couple other games. Will NOT be recommending this game to my audience.

Just uploaded a video on this game today, you can check it out here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOu3znzBGSA&t=977s I’m saying this because idk if anyone has had the same problem I had but in my video this game literally crashed an insane amount. The farthest I made it was that I got outside and saw one enemy after that I wasn’t able to progress any further without the game crashing on me. Seriously it would only let me record for 1 minute each time before the game would stop responding. And the only thing evil about this game is how terrible that flashlight is and how you run out of stamina after a minute XD. If the crashing issue could’ve been fixed I would’ve loved to actually experience what this game was all about but because of that I couldn’t see much of the game at all. Also the only evil thing about the enemies that chase you is how they either run after you forever or give up after 2 seconds lmao.
