This game is the definition of helplessness. From the start, you are thrown into an eerily empty world filled with nothing but trees and impossible architecture. No one to hold your hand, just an ominous message subtly hinting you towards your goal. The game is oddly calming yet incredibly tense at the same time, which made it difficult for me to put a pin in any feeling in particular, making the experience much more frightening. The fear of the unknown is real in this game.

From a technical standpoint, the game runs smooth as butter. There’s a creepy glow and shine on the textures, and the graphics are really crisp. The overall gameplay loop is simplistic enough to understand rather quickly, but the game turns things around and takes the bit of familiarity you gain with your surroundings and completely throws it away, rendering you almost petrified to move into the dark. The sound design is superb, with low ambient drones and rumbles filling the environment, leading to scraping, horrifying sounds as you encounter enemies.

If you enjoy Vidas Games, then this is something you’ll like. If you don’t know who this is, then you may feel different. What I enjoy is the world you are place in. This includes the atmosphere present and the story shown. I enjoyed the environment, but the story felt like “Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time”. You walked a good two minutes to reach either end of the map in order to collect a total of three “Ancients”. Each had their own housing area with a jumpscare attack present. I would be fine with this if dying wasn’t so punishing. There is no save and you have to start from the beginning if you died at any moment. Dying extending my gameplay three times what it was meant to be. It’s scary to be chased and at times the area is unsettling, but that is it. It’s an okay game, but it has you walking a lot with the threat of starting over.

Just watch a let’s play it’s a better use of your time and free! The game is bad the storytelling is atrocious. However, the sound design, and art are good. Don’t waste your few dollars on this unless you’re really into startlingly sweet main menu jump scares because that’s the only thing here that will thrill you.

Nice job forcing a player to wander around a samey, winding, long-ass school for the introductory sequence. Really sets the mood and doesn’t at all make it seem like extended BS gameplay in a veiled attempt to manipulate time limit and avoid refunds.

The short version: Don’t spend your money, it will take you longer to read this review than to ‘beat’ the game.

I was hoping the other reviews were exaggerating how short the gameplay was. I was REALLY hoping.

I was wrong.

This game would make for a great free demo or POC. Sadly, I spent the $3 US to play it - I feel it only delivers $0.03 value.

The graphics are pretty good. The sound design is kinda poor - reverb effects are baked into sounds and cut short, rather than baked into the environment (like the hallway, for example).

Finsterwald

Finsterwald

**Wandering through the deep forest, the tired wayfarer decides to arrange a night camp in a small glade hidden among the tall pines. After cutting young fragrant pine branches and resting for a while near the lightning fire, he suddenly feels a vague anxiety caused by the weirdness of the surrounding forest - not a single sound, not a single gust of wind…

The deeper the advancing darkness becomes, the deeper and more inevitable is the feeling of the growing danger of blurry forest shadows and glittering red eyes, flashing among the trees.

Only the bright campfire stands between the wayfarer and the strange outlines of the forthcoming tall figure…**

“Finsterwald” is a survival horror with elements of adventure VR game (and EVENTUALLY a 3D game - depending on Kickatarter campaign results), based on Dark Ages period German fabulas about Ancient Guardian of the Forests – Waldschrat. Vigilantly observing the behavior of all visitors, he watches over the peace and safety of trees, birds, animals and other fosterlings on the entrusted territory.

As today old narratives are almost forgotten, the careless wayfarers often do not possess the rules of behavior and don’t have knowledge about ways to tame the ancient power, still hidden in the heart of the forest…

State-of-the-art 3D immersive audio technology and modern visual design deliver the most immersive gaming experience ever. Dive into the thrilling atmosphere of old Germanic fabulas and try to cope, having only burning branches of the fire and a desperate desire to survive. Goodwilled Protector of Nature or an Evil Spirit? - It’s your turn to decide!

Great little experience, really enjoyed it. I would love to see this explored a little more. I recomend giving it a play, just make sure to check the cars hood / bonnet when you start, almost missed it :)

so i figured a game for $3.99 can’t be very good. well, was i wrong! one of the best games i’ve played at any price, not based on anything but story and ending. those two things were perfect!

controls are very very simple, graphics ok. it took me 2.7 hours to finish, but i’m old, so….

there are a very few shock scares in the game, which actually gave me chills, once went all the way through me. if you pay attention to the subtle clues in the game, i’m sure you could finish it faster than i did.

JANITOR BLEEDS

JANITOR BLEEDS

JANITOR BLEEDS is a retro-inspired horror game set in an old arcade. A mysterious arcade machine called JANITOR beckons you to play itself, releasing a horrible force upon the player. The only way to survive is to keep playing, but the further you go, the more the events of the arcade game start to influence the real world. When your eyes are glued to the screen, who knows what might be happening right behind your back?

Features

  • Explore a mysterious arcade: The dark corners and hallways hide many secrets. Collect coins and items to progress in the game and most importantly, keep yourself alive. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of an amusement arcade from the 90s, abandoned long ago.

  • Cursed arcade cabinet: Playing the coin-hungry machine affects more than it seems. Solve puzzles and open paths in both the arcade game and the real world to progress in the game. Just remember; the evil within the machine won’t make things easy.

  • Retro-inspired: The game is inspired by the video games of the 90s. The game hasn’t been made to look like a carbon copy; instead, it has been inspired by the visual style of that nostalgic era of gaming and has brought it to the modern standards.

Misery Mansion

Misery Mansion

To the developer: Too short. I was expecting to find the bodies of the parents.. or that it was a fake ending. The sigil pointing towards the exit door seems to indicate it was a trap and fake out AS DOES THE FACT THE MONSTER STILL ROAMS AROUND IN THE HALLWAYS AFTER THE RITUAL IS DONE THAT BANISHES HIM. Both of those led me to thinking there was going to be a trick ending. But no. Just a bland.. “the end”.

It’s worth playing and fun. But dude. I beat it in 3.5 hours. That’s not enough entertainment for a 6.99 game. A good rule of thumb is a dollar an hour.

Real player with 3.9 hrs in game

I really liked this game. it is a pretty impressive level design, graphics looks good, sound design is really good. And for a first game it is really impressive, and i really do hope to see more horror in the future from this developer. Gameplay is pretty simple, you explore the mansion, find some notes, and avoiding a monster while doing so.

Now with that said, I did have a few performance issues here and there when saving and loading in the level, but nothing game breaking and that even might have been fixed since i played. The character do walk a bit slow, and that makes you want to run all the time, but that will make you miss the most of the atmosphere. A few more scares here and there would have been welcome too :)

The Horologist’s Legacy

The Horologist’s Legacy

My opinion of Horologist’s Legacy is a solid one. The game is a practical masterpiece to me. On every playthrough the overlying story seeks deeper and deeper into my brain until im able to track the symbolism in every sight I see.

Oh and the game looks beautiful on Ultra and if you set your contrast to 25-35 when you’re outside and the sun is out.

The Town of Light

The Town of Light

The Town of Light (ToL), developed by LKA, is the most fascinating game I’ve played so far. At first it seems like every horror/slasher game you’ve ever played, but it slowly dawns on you that ToL is much worse!

Firstly, before even starting the game, do take the time to read the Diary (included for free in later versions), and you’ll find yourself in a world of schizophrenic mania moving between the real world of fascist Italy in the late 1930s and the confusing, but always painful, world of delusion and despair as experienced by 16-year-old Renee T.

This game is going to satisfy your craving for urban exploring without getting a hammy jumpscare. I think we can all use more games like that; haunting storylines that are a different sort of scary without worrying about some half-baked monster trying to nibble on my face like I’m a bedtime snack.

The Town of Light creates a setting that is inspired by real events. Yes, the asylum in Volterra exists. Yes, some of these rooms are exactly as they are depicted. Google-fu that. It is disturbing and it weaves a sort of story that makes a person cringe and their blood run cold. For all intents and purposes, this is more like a walking simulator with a few puzzles.
