Shadows Peak

Shadows Peak

It’s scary. It really is. Not so much the jump scares kinda stuff, but more… the running of foot steps across the ground toward you. Tip-toeing through tall grass hoping you step in a bear trap. Sprinting along and hearing the hiss of a snake. And other things I won’t give away!

The game is roughly divided into two parts. The first is maybe a bit better than the second, but don’t listen to the reviews that say the last part is horrible. It definitely is not. There’s nothing that significantly stands out that says “the dev put more time/effort into the first part.”

As some of you may know as much as I love playing games on my PC I also have quite a lot of time for the console exclusive titles. One of my favorite games of 2015 was Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn. Ainslie and I played the shit out of that game. It hooked both of us together and we sat on her couch playing it for many many hours and made a lot of shared decisions to see how our playthrough would advance. It was one of the best gaming experiences the two of us have shared together. I was not expecting to find another horror game that would be comparable to that experience wise for a long time. That’s why when I found myself fortunate enough to play Andrii Vintsevych’s Shadows Peak I was more than a little bit surprised and deeply absorbed in its early access game play.

I did like this game quite a bit. 7/10 if I had to put a number on it. 8/10 if it were longer. The game does a fair job of making you like most of the characters at least a bit. The story is interesting enough, and does a good job keeping you guessing as to what is going on in the big picture. I think the only real flaw I can think of is more of a game design pet peeve. The ending you get is largely, if not entirely dependent on your final decision. I like it a lot more when choices throughout the game determine the ending, rather that the final scene being the game changing moment for the whole story. Still though, it’s a good game, creepy enough, fun to play, good story. Would recommend.

Really fun game, clever puzzles without being frustrating or way too easy (looking at you skyrim) a whodunit kind of plot with Phoenix Wright/Danganroppa style interludes in between puzzle sections, did scare me quite a few times and the overwall plot of what happened in the monastery in the past and how it relates to what is happening now i really enjoyed.

Its Fairly short ate around 2:30ish hours depending on how well you do with the puzzles but its well made,no boring padding and barely any backtracking trough previous areas, maps feel cleverly designed with its connection to previously visited areas trough new entrances,it is a simple game but a very well made one, highly recommend

The Mortuary Assistant

The Mortuary Assistant

Having completed your degree in mortuary sciences, you have taken on an apprenticeship at River Fields Mortuary. Over the past several months you have logged many hours aiding the Mortician in daily tasks along with learning the ins and outs of the embalming process as well as how to properly handle and care for the deceased.

Over your time at River Fields, you have heard rumors of families bringing their deceased loved ones believed to be possessed or otherwise entangled with the paranormal to this specific mortuary to put to rest. But, with such a stigma around death and what happens when we die, it’s no surprise people make up stories around the dead.

Late one night, you are called into work to handle some embalmings. Death doesn’t keep day time hours. But there is something different about these bodies because there is something different about you. The phone rings with the Mortician on the other end. The rumors are true, and you can not leave.

Perform embalmings, handle the various jobs around the mortuary, and exercise demonic forces. All in a day’s work.

This game was incredible. I have always harbored a love for rpg maker games and CTB takes me right back to the early days of Ib and Mad Father. There is an abundance of things I enjoyed with this game, so for clarity sake, I’ll bullet them below:

  • Artwork: The in game sprites fit the surrounding area. No colors break the scenes palette and are to scale (which can be a lot to ask with some games like this). The original artwork and character dialogue plates present a style that is both familiar and unique, something smooth to look at put against the harsh nature of the haunted manor. I adored the different cycles of expressions our MC can go through, their eyes in particular were adept at conveying the horror of her situation.

Curious Cases

Curious Cases

My friend and I completed this together, both in VR. The graphics are good, the environments are well-designed, and the puzzles are interesting and mostly fair. We encountered a handful of bugs, but nothing game-breaking. Occasionally one of us would pick up an item and it would appear in the other’s hand. Once, we entered a correct code, got the “success” noise, but the door wouldn’t open. Luckily, we were able to reach inside and remove the items through the door anyway.

We were stuck for a long time in the first room on a puzzle that requires a numeric code. We’d just played this developer’s Tales of Escape, which is very similar. In that game, every lock requires exactly 4 digits. It wasn’t until we relented and got a hint that we realized this one needed 5 digits. Also, the code in the hint had two digits transposed.

I would say this is a great escape room-like puzzle game with friends, it might be tedious or annoying by yourself.

It’s got some rather interesting puzzles/riddles, and it’s well worth it’s price for what it offers, so I’d recommend it.

As for a VR experience, it’s mediocre at best, but works. That’s my summary of the review, if you want to read a bit more, see below.

One gripe I would have would be the sync between players in your game. You could’ve thrown an object across the room, yet the other player sees you drop it, the other player picks it up, then drops it normally and it falls through the ground for both players, requiring you to reset items. Or, items just wouldn’t be there for one or both of the players, causing you to reset items. You will be doing this often.

Hermitage: Strange Case Files

Hermitage: Strange Case Files

Hermitage: Strange Case Files is not your average visual novel, nor is it your average cosmic horror title. With relaxing-yet-energetic jazzy tunes that’ll have you sipping coffee and pondering the depths of the darkness that resides within the human mind, the game feels oddly comfortable and confusing at the same time. It’s not that I didn’t want Hermitage: Strange Case Files to end — it got to a point where I genuinely didn’t think it would, its unexplained mysteries consuming all that’s left of me (40 hours to complete, y’all). If you’re looking for an interactive visual novel to get absolutely lost in (in every possible sense of that phrase), Hermitage: Strange Case Files has a literal bookstore to delve into.

This was a fun little horror game for sure:) I messed up a bit and misunderstood something and that led to some dying and alot of time walking around with no clue what to do. But thats all on me lol. All in all, fun little halloween horror game. Damn kids and their freaking candy!;) :)

This is the seedling of the ideal Halloween game, for which I’d gladly pay a big-game price. Seriously, they are onto something that is exactly what I’ve been looking for. It does have its issues though, which even at the current price, totally ruined it for me. I tried to detail exactly why in the forums; nobody likes negative feedback, but the mods deleted most of my comments, then called me insulting and toxic, and banned me. I’ve never been banned from anything before so this was bewildering. I attempted to get more information from them, but couldn’t get a response. I then asked for a refund which, since I’d played the game over 2 hours (struggling to solve a riddle), was of course denied. Steam Support failed to help. Buyer beware.

Story

You play as investigative journalist “Mr. Johnson” after receiving several tips of a government cover up at a recently abandoned psychiatric hospital. All reports suggest illegal experiments taking place on the patients of the facility- and supposedly a government cover up. Detective Johnson decided to go through with this one off-books and after just a few days of preparation he sets out to explore the abandoned facility in the middle of the night, to recover patient records.

2AM: You arrive at the scene, it is a gloomy and silent night. Rain is pouring, wind flows through the air as an unsetteling feeling kicks in. Something isn’t right here, but there is only one way to figure out what it is…

Gameplay

Insaniam is a first person survival horror game, your objective is to retrieve at least five patient records for the abandoned facility.

You’ll be forced to scavenge for batteries to keep your camcorder charged, utilize the night vision mode to explore the dark, use sanity pills or stay in the light to keep sane, avoid hallucinations, while something is lurking in the darkness and so much more.

Gameplay is based around a speed run mechanic where you’ll play for shortest time to escape or longest time survived. Randomized game mechanics keep this experience fresh and increases re-playablity.

The game is not story focused but there is underlying lore that is optional to explore through text, visuals or audio.

The characters are solid and intriguing, the artwork is enjoyable, and although the game as a whole is simplistic in nature and control, the story was original and interesting to follow!

I can tell that the team put a lot of love and effort into this game.

I would reccomend this to someone who wants to play a quick, simple, point and click story game with quality characters and a good storyline. This was a great game to play between homework breaks!

Real player with 3.6 hrs in game

I think I got this game from a bundle - it’s nice little thing around 1-2$ or at full price when you want to show support, but quality-wise it can’t stand up against other games in the same price range.

It’s a messy game to review - it has strong points, good ideas, but it lacks in cohesion and execution. But then it was literally done by kids/teens, which explains the shortcomings, and make it a solid game. But when comparing it to others, it’s not really up to par. Treat it as a proof of concept, a result of a game jam, or that someone told a story through a game, while not really making it a “gamey” game.
