Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun
Sengoku jidai is a turn based 4x4 grid style strategy game based in eastern asia and asias historical battles. Covering Japan to Korea, China and Mongolia its a true gem of a game that, get this, the developers still work on.
Lets talk about the game play:
Im going to be straight up honest, It’s not for everyone. Its like chess, with rng. Your units battle each other, based on their attack stats, armour stats, terrain and morale the computer calculates how much damage is done to the unit and if damage is done to their morale. You can also affect this based on your position which is where the game really shines.

This game is simply incredible. I had been looking for a tabletop wargaming experience in digital format for a very long time. The direct predecessor to this game, Pike and Shot, looked very viable, but I was not interested enough in the time period and aesthetic of it to gamble $40. Something about landschneckts in frilly blouses and giant feather caps wielding impossibly long pikes just doesn’t do it for me (purely a personal preference).
But being a lifelong fan of Japanese history, and in particular the Sengoku Jidai, when this game came out I knew I had to get it. I have no regrets. It is a near-perfect digital adaptation of tabletop wargaming.

Destroy The Shogun
Had fun with this. Took me about 2 hours to beat. Easier/more forgiving than a lot of retro-style platformers, which was a plus to me. Some very fun music, and a grappling hook that felt good to use. Would have liked if it was a little bit longer, but still felt satisfying enough as-is.

Great game but god dang is it difficult not sure if it was the alcohol or the fact my chess I.Q. is 42 but it was a fun little brain boggler killing the Generals was extremely satisfying after trying not to get spanked by some simp rooks/bishops. Not sure how to get all the achievements since I hid in a bush and didn’t get the hide in a bush achievement (got faito achievement at later date which has been included in video thanks to user carmylle on steam) but if you need help on any of the levels. my play through with all levels here: https://youtu.be/xhNwdCEFKZo

Really great minimalist puzzle game. The recent update tripled the content of an already great game, definitely worth the price here. Knights are my least favorite chess piece, but playing them as a ninja may have changed my view of them.
The difficulty scales wonderfully right up until the last level which is very very hard, but just enough to where you feel accomplished when you beat it. The only negative I have here is you can’t pan the camera, only zoom and rotate. Other than that this is a standout of the minimalist puzzle genre.

A Total War Saga: FALL OF THE SAMURAI

I can’t believe how petty some people are. It’s a good thing that these people are only a minority and don’t represent Total War community as a whole - seeing some people raging and trying to review bomb a game over something like this is just downright sad: not even allowing comments on their spam reviews and hiding behind private accounts. “Forcing us to buy the game again! Stupid naming the game again! Prince increased!” First for the people going on about “price thieves!”, Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai includes the DLC that originally had to be purchased separately - the price takes this into account and isn’t more expensive than previously purchasing them separately with the game. It would help if you would actually bother checking what you are going on about instead of just riding along as some sad meme: no one is forcing you to buy the game again. If you already own Fall of the Samurai you will still own it - the rebranding does not affect you. Fall of the Samurai was always a standalone game - it did not require Shogun 2 to be played, and being a standalone game set in a more constrained time period (like Thrones of Britannia) as opposed to a more open-ended experience like the mainstay Total War titles, rebranding it under the Total War Saga is actually fitting. That some people are raging like this without even knowing what they are on about is simply ridiculous. Fortunately Steam now has a system in place to disregard raging kids like this with their attempts at review bombing.
Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai is one of the best Total War games. The game has most of the positives of the base Shogun 2 game, The game looks great, performs well and has late game difficulty. Unfortunately, the game’s multiplayer can be extremely unbalanced at times. However, the game’s innovation and experimentation make up for any flaws or roughness it may have from being a stand-alone game made between major releases.
Fall of the Samurai does not look as amazing as Shogun 2, but it still looks great. The modern units look dignified but still rough in a realistic way. The old school samurai look traditional and plain, but their simplicity is oddly intimidating. The campaign map is a 19th century styled geographic map that places less emphasis on beautiful mountains and more on the great plains and seas that can be traversed by rail and steamship.
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
I’m still missing some achievements but the Steam Awards are here and Shadow Tactics deserves a prize.
Briefly: Shadow Tactics is a real-time stealth tactics game, a true tribute to Commandos games. Instead of soldiers, it’s about ninjas and scheming in feudal Japan. And it fits the concept perfectly.
It’s always a bit daunting to write about a game you love. Shadow Tactics has everything you loved about Commandos games, coming with a modern interface. It’s also a great example that Unity can create truly great games.

I guess all of us have games that we used to love back in the days, but can’t find anything like them on modern market. Times changed and now there are many dead, or half-dead genres and sub-genres. Space simulators, rail shooters… Even real-time strategies and puzzle / point & click adventures aren’t doing well now. Among all that there’s a small RTS sub-genre that was never really big, but still made a lot of loyal fans. I’m talking about Commandos series and its clones. An unique mix of stealth and RTS with revolutionary “cons of sight” system. By controlling group of soldiers with the unique set of abilities, players were supposed to finish different missions in WWII setting. The first two Commandos games (released in 1998 and 2001 respectively) were absolutely brilliant and it felt like their makers, Pyro Studios, are making instant classic. Unfortunately, the third Commandos game wasn’t that popular thanks to many questionable changes in the gameplay, while FPS spin-off called Commandos: Strike Force started the dark times for Pyro Studios. Which switched to casual games soon after that. Commandos series died. But there was another team to keep their spirit alive.

Tale of Ninja: Fall of the Miyoshi
I like that there is a ninja game and thank you for that whoever, I think the game would be a great one to this list:
1- cursor lock(this one is a must)
2- unique animations that make feel like a ninja. I don’t want to be rude, but right now a big proportion of the animations look like mobile to me.
3-controls:
1- full controller support.
2- free controls adjustments for keyboard&mouse and controller
some people are OK with the default controls and some are not I think this would satisfy all kinds of people

I was originally looking for a game , Tenchu and this came up. It was alright - entertaining and will finish all maps. Hoping for fighting style improvements and more maps in the future.

Total War: SHOGUN 2
OK I’m older than the average gamer and have a history of traditional wargaming - map based and figure based games/campaigns. I find all the Total War immersive and an excellent up to date computer based version of traditional wargaming. Shogun 2 is a particular favourite as it was the first one I really started to customise with user based extensions and later my own. Today, I’m downloading it again to play it for the first time in about 3 years and can hardy wait. Programming wise, apart from a few moody extensions the game is very reliable and lock-up and crash free. It also gets a big plus for not stealing all my memory and CPU run time allowing me to multi-task with high end productivity and graphics software.

Shinobi’s Way - a jigsaw chess tale
Eh, for the price it’s okay. The ‘chess’ mode is pretty bad (just jigsaws shaped vaguely like chess pieces), but otherwise the jigsaws are fine. There are only 6 of them though, but with 4 different amounts of pieces and the option to turn rotation on and off it offers just enough variety for the asking price.

A very nice jigsaw puzzle, relaxing and bold. If you ara fan of the Knight´s Retreat series you are gonna love it.
