Attentat 1942

Attentat 1942

I am certainly partial to games that tell a story. However, games that pass down important and historical information are even better. A game that can entertain and teach possesses a special power. Not only can the game effectively deliver important information that the player is more likely to retain than they would sitting in a history class, but it also engages them in such a way that the information becomes relevant and memorable. I know I’ll never forget how my hands sweat when the gestapo knocked on the door and I had to quickly find a way to nervously delay them. I was impressed with the mechanics during that mini game, and I think that games like this should be made available, and perhaps even replace, outdated teaching techniques in school.

Attentat 1942 is a FMV game, where you want to know, what happened with your father and mother in Prague at the Second World War.

What I really liked in the game, is how it looks. Now, the videos has all right quality, however the older cutscenes are made with comic styled, but more like newspaper version of that, and those cutscenes looked amazing. Everything is understandable from them and looked really nice.

About the story, I liked it really much. Reminds me of older stories from the same time, which I heard from my grandparents. It showed the war from a different perspective, which is not cover in history books or in TV properly. Most of the choices you can do in the game makes sense and bring the story forward. Characters have their motives and own story is really nice, however I need to mention, that these stories happened and that gives a whole new depth to it.

Titanic: Adventure Out Of Time

I have a lot of history with this game and it is excellent. Today the 3D environment combined with the flip-book-esq character models seem comical and dated, but at the time the game’s design was impressive and detailed. The decision to render the people who populate the game as images instead of 3D polygons meant that they avoided the uncanny valley to a large extent. Even if the character models still seem to stutter and move strangely, it comes off mostly as charming, like Smether’s eyebrow and Vlad’s little grin. The ship was well-researched enough to feature in documentaries and in museums as a 3D model.

This game is an absolute treasure. If you’re interested in playing some classic retro PC games then this one should definitely be on your list. Especially if you’re someone who is interested in the Titanic.

You play as a British secret agent aboard the Titanic during the night of the sinking. You’re pretty much the James Bond of 1912. The game is mostly point and click with little action. You’ll find that the graphics and gameplay style are quite dated and some of the puzzles are awfully difficult. However, the non-linear story and exploration of the ship are still very enjoyable. There’s no autosave and it’s possible to get a “game over” so you should save somewhat often. You can succeed or fail at objectives, and the game turns into a race against time to make it onto a lifeboat. The better your performance before the iceberg, the easier it is to succeed during the sinking. There’s one “good” ending and a few “bad” endings based on what items you manage to leave the ship with. That is, if you manage to leave the ship alive at all.

Killing Time

This is the second FPS I played when I was young (Doom 2 was the first). This game was so scary back then. It took me 12h to complete it. This FPS is different from others as it has only one huge map. It is not a classical get the red/yellow/blue keys to complete the level. There is some short videos that reveal the story peace by peace. The weapon are great.

Only drawback are the controls. But once you get use to it you’ll almost forget about them.

I finally finnished that game I started 23 years ago :)

This game took me years to get up and running simply because it does not run well on modern systems out of the box; going from garbled graphics one year, no sound the next and then just refuses to boot after that - I had given up hope trying to get it up and running. But thanks to the wonderful work of the Killing Time community and the fan patch they have been updating for years; I can finally play and enjoy the game and I’ll confidently say that this game is a real hidden if very flawed little gem of a classic 90s boomer shooter! Time may have forgotten it but after discovering it for the first time myself, I really hope more people will give this game a try.

Svoboda 1945: Liberation

Svoboda 1945: Liberation

Svoboda 1945: Liberation was created by Charles Games in collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences. It blends fiction and historical accuracy and uses a diverse range of gameplay and storytelling techniques to recount experiences in Svoboda, a village near the Czech-German border during and after WWII.

The game includes historical documents, photographs, video footage and an encyclopedia that ground the stories in reality making the often harrowing accounts all the more emotive. In addition to the various real elements and factual information, the game also uses a mix of fictional aspects such as FMV video clips and conversations, explorable scenes, animated comic strips and mini-games to deliver the narratives.

Svoboda 1945: Liberation is the newest game to come from Czech developers, Charles Games. Following the critical success of Attentat 1942, the developers continue to convey history in innovative and engaging methods. Integrating FMV interviews, minigames, comic-style scenes and an abundance of factual documents to read, the game was fascinating from start to finish.

Pros

  • Varied gameplay and minigames throughout.

  • Immense collection of factual documents to read (optional).

VR King Arthur’s Sword in Romano Britania

VR King Arthur’s Sword in Romano Britania

VR King Arthur’s Sword in Romano Britania’ is a slightly interactive experience in which you get to explore a handful of scenes trying to find a sword. Once you have found the sword you can move onto the next scene. The movement itself is extremely nauseating and there is no educational material here at all, it is just scene after scene. This is not something I can recommend to anyone because it lacks anything to suggest to people. It’s not fun, it’s not educational and the movement means it is not relaxing. This is one app I suggest you avoid, or maybe stab a sword into because that is what the developer should have done to it rather than releasing it.

Tragedy of Prince Rupert

Tragedy of Prince Rupert

I love this game. I like the look of it, and the soothing music, and the difficulty curve…everything is fantastic. I already bought it for one friend, and I’ll probably buy it a few more times in the near future to give to other friends as gifts. Go get Tragedy of Prince Rupert, for yourself; you won’t regret it.

EDIT: I said that the extra crew members were just cosmetic. Well, after reading a post from developer, those actually have an impact on the gameplay (they give you more HP, slow enemy bullets, etc.). But them again how can you blame me for thinking those were just cosmetic, if the game doesn’t give you ANY information?

When you first start up this game, it feels like just another Twin Stick shooter with unique art style. But actually it’s got more depth than most Twin Sticks I’ve played. You play as Prince Rupert, who’s flying a Montgolfière, that has the fastest shooting cannon in the world. You’re on your quest to prove yourself to be worthy groom for some princess and everybody else who wants to marry her is after you. And your balloon is capable of flying into space and dive 20 000 leagues under the sea. That in itself is the most awesome concept for a game I’ve seen in a while.
