Gem Wizards Tactics

Gem Wizards Tactics

Ok, I don’t know how to write reviews so I’ll just tell you an experience I had with the game wich shows why I think it’s great.

My small team of Potato soldiers were about to be wiped out by an overwhelming force of soldiers from the Azure Order. I had already captured three of the four flags I needed to win the battle, but I was getting swarmed and pushed out towards the northwestern corner of the map. And my leader, Andromeda Robin, was already dead. My only chance to get the last flag was to kill an enemy squad leader. Unfortunately the squadleader was behind a ton of spearmen, knights, archers and catapults.

Exceedingly good and long-lasting gameplay value for those with limited time–each match lasts anywhere from 20-30 minutes at most. The player factions are varied and fairly balanced from my limited exposure of each. Gameplay is simple at first glance, but the synergies among units adds deep, tactical and surprising complexity to the Advanced Wars-like formula.

About the only thing that would add value to an already enjoyable game would be at least two or three more player factions, but the developer has already hinted that this is a possibility. Could we get a robot faction please?

I am definitely having fun with this game, so I can recommend it. I didn’t really like it at first, but as I experimented with the different team combinations and learned more about the game play, I really started to get into it.

This isn’t a fancy game. You create a team of three characters. Mutant, Knight, Ninja, Ranger, Wizard, and Shaman. You navigate a world map by moving from spot to spot. Each spot is either empty, has a battle grid with monsters, has a reward statute, has a merchant, has a new skill, etc. The maps aren’t that big.

I like turn-based tactic games, and I am hardcore gamer who dedicated many hours to the XCOM series. However, sometimes I turn to obviously more simple games, like Guards of the Gate.

Pros:

  • Nice look, for the game of that kind quite fair;

  • Interesting map system without out-of-battle healing and statues which strengthen teams in next runs;

  • Some skills that I have not encountered in other games of this type;

  • Simple but enjoyable battle system on small hexagonal fields.

Cons:

  • The game is very badly balanced, for now. Some classes are more useful than others; teams of certain type make walkthrough very easy, and others - very hard, but irritating hard, because of bad skills combination and artificial weaknesses. This is very important, because for turn-based tactic game to be replayable it must have various strategies and approaches. Now there is only one effective approach.

Slay

Slay

Part puzzle part strategy, this turn based map domination game is simple but very addictive.

No story, no flashy graphics, minimal sounds, just game play

Similar to risk, but with no random dice to help or hinder your moves.

With 468 maps available as soon as you start the game, this game provides many hours of challenging game play, with the ability to choose another map if you get frustrated. A maps tile coloring and locations will always be the same when you start, the only differences will be what you choose to do. If you make the same moves you did in a previous try, you will find the computer will always react the same way as well. This is in part what can make it like a puzzle. There are some maps that take specific actions in the early turns or they are unbeatable. This however is the exception and over all it is just learning what is the best way to take new territory while protecting what you have. Beating a map seems to have 3 stages; early game trying to create little territories that are big enough and well defended enough that they don’t get picked appart, mid game trying to connect the territories that survived, and late game making cutting actions through larger territories to kill enemy units while defending from smaller territories that will nibble at you…. oh also keeping the trees under control.

What is it?

Slay is a simple, turn-based strategy game of “capture the island” where you must attempt to secure more hexagons on the map than any of the other AI opponents. It’s actually a very old game now (I first played the game back in the mid 1990s and have played it ever since) but in recent times the developer has made mobile versions of the game, before finally porting that version back to PC and onto Steam. It would be accurate to say that I’ve accrued thousands of hours playing versions of the game since 1995, and I don’t regret buying this newer version if only by way of thanking the developer for all those lost hours of the last 20+ years!

Seems like a nice little game, though I ran into a bug on Mission 9 that meant I couldn’t complete the mission and continue the campaign. I used Cheat Engine to force the Events::IsTriggered check to always be true and that caused the mission to immediately fail and complete instantly allowing me to continue however.

A wonderful little strategy game.

At first, it seems a bit simplistic, but with each advancing level you need to change your tactics to adjust for the defenses established on the map.

I will not say it is terribly difficult, but it is a pleasant challenge until you figure out your own personal strategy.

HEXONEX

HEXONEX

HEXONEX is a great fun game with a ton of content for a $1.99 price tag. I haven’t seen the “You can move, but only away from the tile you are touching” mechanic which adds a serious level of depth and strategy to every move you make. I found myself projecting trying to find be best move for every level. Well worth the time and money and sleek as can be!

Takes a minute to understand but once you do its a chill, meditative puzzle game. Many pleasing color options, cool music and sound effects (or you can turn either or both off and vibe to your own tunes if you want). Well worth the price!

For less than 10 bucks at the time of purchase, this game gets at the heart of addictive upgradability very cleanly and quickly. It is (obviously) not a high-budget effort but the music is pleasant, new mechs/tech are fun to see and use, and I have no problem setting this one along-side Into the Breach and Battletech as a worthwhile giant robot tactics game that borrows a little bit from a lot of good places while managing to achieve its own unique feel.

If I had to place it in a one-liner I’d say it’s maybe a boiled down combo of Front Mission 3 and FTL’s random maps. It doesn’t have the depth of either but it has enough of its own thing on top of that to be a worthwhile experience. I look forward to watching both this game and its creators evolve over time.

First of all I have to say that I do have lots of respect for a person who develops such a game nearly on his own.

The game is very well balanced and it´s fun to play. I recommend it for everyone who is into turn-based strategy games. With that price, it´s defenitely worth it. I like the Mechdesign. They look cool but kind of cute too, hovering over the battlefield. Of course it makes no sence trying to compare it with a Battletech game, where hundrets of people are involved. For such a one-man-show, it´s great.

The Maracot Deep

The Maracot Deep

Turn based RPG game in fantasy setting - a set of simple elements from RPG, plus turn based movement and fights.

FEATURES

Game opportunities:

  • There is a stock, the whole three types of weapon and a rum bottle (that else can cure the real old salt!).

  • It is possible to plunder chests with gold! (the truth pirates from it strongly are upset and fall into violence).

  • It is possible to collect objects and to plunder chests only to a final whistle - at least one opponent is still alive (that a little inconveniently and forces other crew members to run from blows while one plunders everything that comes across).

  • On the stolen gold it is possible to buy the same pirates.

  • Weapon has a resource, and breaks at the most inappropriate moment, leaving the seaman with barehanded - and it at the levels a little therefore more powerful weapon should protect and be not to spent for weak opponents.

  • During the game it is possible to switch to any seaman (so far he gives signs of life of course). It is impossible to switch to pirates - for management it is necessary to allocate with them the seaman.

  • During fight it is possible to transfer weapon from one other seaman, in turn using it.

  • For passing of final fight - at least 6 pistols are required - they are at the previous level, but there it is better not to spend them.

I love hexagons and general deductive stuff more than I hate sudoku, so I had to try hexdoku at some point.

you have to place various shapes all over the hex-based grids, without repeating them in the same line or area. no guessing necessary, one solution per level. 32 main levels unlocked one by one, including a tutorial and a final ‘thank you’ level. 31 bonus stages with slightly different rules are made available on separate branches when you reach them on the map (3x10 but one also has a tutorial, and they also unlock one by one).

Too many glitches–and crickets from the developers. Ashamed that it has to be this way. I wanted to like this game and their coming titles, but beware–there are unaddressed issues.

decent idea but the game is like a couple of tries of trying to win and then your done and you have no use for it anymore its still pretty decent for what it is tho but id say wait till sale not worth 10 quid

Advanced Tactics Gold

Advanced Tactics Gold

A really great game, it is my favorite game, and here’s why…

Random Games

The random games and the editor allows you to play this for a decade straight, every random games match has led to a completely different match, and can be randomized more with the ability to choose size, age (How flat the terrain is, older is flatter), weather (None, or Tropical to Arctic), and more

Editor

The editor is very, very powerful, it (As in the description of the game) is very versitile, all you have to do is, a couple clicks of a button, and nearly everything is able to be changed, or replaced all together. Rulvars allow you to change the rules of the game, SFT’s allow you to add or take away units from the game, Items allow you to change how you build the SFT’s or resources. The editor is also ingame, and on the main menu!

Advanced Tactics Gold is an excellent wargame in terms of concepts and incorporating the real world with supply, supply issues and bottlenecks, morale, experience, production, technology (political points) using command leadership for combat bonus, tactics such as encirclement to give bonus, combined arms tactics, etc.

Six negatives that I hope are addressed:

1. The time between each turn can run 3 minutes and that is with only two players, you vs AI.

2. The interface and associated programming/code can stand for a MAJOR upgrade. For example, you are constantly building new units and the number of clicks to accomplish what you need to do each turn is astounding. There are some very simple solutions.
