Möbius Front ‘83

Möbius Front ‘83

I think this is my first Steam review; I watched a talk from Zach and he said that he takes feedback seriously so I figured, why not?

I love Zachtronics’ coding games, and I also love turn-based wargames, so I was pretty excited for this one. Unfortunately I think they’ve missed the mark this time. There’s a lot to like, but while it has the pleasing simplicity of games like Into the Breach (single-digit numbers for health, damage, range, and speed, grid map, etc.) it lacking some of the elegance.

Möbius Front 83 is a simple and good game. Yet to finish it, but played enough of it to say what I think.

PROS:

  • Great presentation, graphics is aesthetically pleasing, great animations of units – I love how dust animation is used to indicate direction of movement of vehicles.

  • Outstanding sound design. Muffled sound of weapon fire and explosion sound like you hear weapons firing in the distance or if, like I imagine it would be to hear sound of weapons firing while you sit in an armoured vehicle.

Too many glitches–and crickets from the developers. Ashamed that it has to be this way. I wanted to like this game and their coming titles, but beware–there are unaddressed issues.

Panzer Corps 2

Panzer Corps 2

It’s an OK title that doesn’t live up to the previous installment in game depth and it’s poorly optimized, so it crashes my pretty decent computer with a dedicated graphics card.

Despite the criticisms below, the main game is decent (if short), so it may still be worth it, but don’t expect the DLC to somehow expand or better the game. It was more frustrating than entertaining.

I got the field marshal edition with all the dlc and what they don’t tell you in the AD is that the DLC is not at all connected to the main game. it’s a stand alone game where you advance in chapters. TOTAL bummer.

Huge disapointment. I’m a huge Panzer Corps fan and I could’nt wait for this game to come out. I have played this game and have run into some errors that need to be adressed

Let me start with what this game gets right.

1. AT guns act like artilery when defending against hard targets, ei tanks, which is a good feature that makes both Tank destroyers and AT guns usefull and instrumental both attacking and defending.

2. The option for troops to use a transport and then dismount is also a very welcome feature.

Tank Operations: European Campaign

Review updated 07-2020 (Ver. 2.2.0)

Short version (TLDR):

Beautifully designed and addictive strategy and tactics game; easy to learn, but difficult to master

I am absolutely excited about this game, since in my opinion it’s a simple but yet very coherent modern take on the genre and since it can to the same extent be as challenging as very rewarding, because of its varied strategical and tactical possibilities and its many individual features. It also has beautifully and elaborately designed maps and units and a very consistent atmosphere, which brings to mind professional crafted, but heroic Hollywood war movies.

well, only a tester, and not one to do many reviews, but this one is well worth the time and effort and i also don’t mind putting my name to it, before release, i was on the early to late alpha versions, then early and late beta, now into early access i can clearly see a lot of progressions and updates, changers and alterations, from feedback and idea’s and items which didn’t work so well so was altered, a lot has been added since and the game can’t be compared to the earlier versions in all but name of the game.

This simulation gets so many things right. It can be as complicated as you want yet can be played by letting the computer take care of the mundane tasks. The choices are there if you want to deal with them or you can play the commander and chief and let the AI do the detailed work.

Example: you can have your units reinforced automatically or you can decide which ones need priority.

The naval game is very well done with the hundreds of convoys and escorts handled by the AI while you can run a task force or two for special missions and invasion.

Only recently moved to steam version. About 15 completed PvP games before the move and 6 ongoing.

As others have written, this game is strategic in the same broad category as Strategic command. It is more accessible that the likes of Hearts of Iron or a Gary Grigsby game though I play these too.

It is quite easy to pick up if you have experience of similar genre games, but a complex game to master. Another reviewer complained that the publisher Matrix said it was an ‘incredibly accurate’ WWII game. It isn’t - the Dev describes it better - it’s a wargame set in a WWII setting, not a simulation.

1943 Deadly Desert

1943 Deadly Desert

For the 0.5$ that I’ve paid for it, 1943 Deadly Desert is actually quite a solid turn-based tactical wargame, theming Allies-Axis struggle in North Africa.

Sure, the visuals are static, making it look like something from the ’90s, like KOEI games Operation Europe: Path to Victory or P.T.O.

However, the gameplay process is actually closer to the Men of War series. About the same AI depth of engagement, the maps, and mission goals principles… yeah, but flattened into 2 dimensions, lacking visual effects and some of the more complex game mechanics.

Small little indie game, normally I would not really bother with it but theatre of war in North Africa is my favourite and games don’t really take us there so I thought why not and bought it :)

It’s actually mobile game but controls are nice and there are no problems. There are 2 things I really dislike about it, if you zoom then graphic that you can see on screenshots (really nice i must say) is pixelated and not so much fun to look at any more. So you have to play with camera as high as possible to enjoy a view. Another thing is that every unit face only 1 way, so you always see one side facing wrong way and shooting there. A bit immersion killer and I think with a bit of work it could actually be fixed.

NB : Comments from playing with the original Slitherine version.

Taking into account all expansions, I played over 300 PzC scenarios. And it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

This is first and foremost a “game” rather than a “simulation”, yet the game has plenty of historical chrome and details. It is really easy to get into the game even if you are not familiar with WW2 tactics. However there is plenty of room to showcase your skills whether tactical or for managing your corps. For those reasons I’m glad to see this game coming to Steam and a wider audience.

I edited my review and put at the beginning the important facts I see after more hours of play. Below comes my initial review.

Here are the important facts new players (old PG players) should know:

  • Better fighting rules. (Suppressing fire, easier attack when more units adjacent to attacked hexfield, etc.) Real good small things old PG players will love when they see it.

  • Better overall units and stats balance. (no overpowered PzIVF2 with range 2 for example :))

  • Special skills are transparent now: For good fighting units gain Iron Crosses (no effect) and brigade heroes, which give a random skill + 1 to 3 points. You see the result when hovering mouse over in detailled unit view or other GUI manifestations of these battle honours.

The Troop

The Troop

On the morning of the 6th June 1944 the Western Allies began the largest seaborne invasion in the history of warfare. D-Day would mark the start of a vicious campaign to wrestle North West Europe from German control. The following months would see the ancient fields, farms and villages serve as a battleground for new, lethal weapons that would become legendary.

The Troop follows the campaign of British and Canadian forces as they face the German Heer and SS in Normandy. Take command of infantry, motorised and armoured units in desperate tactical turn-based combat against an AI opponent that is challenging and unpredictable, but fair and fallible.

Conquicktory

Conquicktory

Conquicktory is a minimalistic turn-based strategy focused on top-level decisions in your civilization’s development. You’ll control the diplomacy relations with neighboring countries, declare wars, plan the key strikes and distribute funds to the peaceful/military issues. Your subjects will do the rest of work - there is no need to deeply micromanage all the aspect of your glorious growing empire.

The game map has 3 views:

1. Military view. If you see a spear with a flag over one of your cities, it means that you can create an army in it. Simply touch and drag from it and you’ll see the army path. Army will capture cells around its path. The same dragging way is used to plan the movement of your existing armies. Also you can see the cells defense ratings on this view. Cells are defended by nearby armies, cities and forts.

2. Diplomacy view. Here you can select a country and see its current enemies (red) and allies (green). You can select a country and suggest a treaty to it, or declare war. Also here you can answer the treaties suggestions from other players

3. Economy view. You can see how much each of your cities brings to you, and set the funds spreading to war, peaceful growth and treasury. You can fund new cities and fortresses in this view.

Game features:

  • easy control mode which lets you focus on the top-level questions of you empire

  • simultaneous moves, which are performed once all the players have issued orders

  • challenging AI, which does not cheat but can make clever moves

  • spectator mode, where you can relax and spectate how the AI play (and try to guess the winner)

  • prebuilt maps of the world, continents and countries, which you can conquer

Great Battles of Carolus XII

Great Battles of Carolus XII

PROS

  • simple graphics

  • easy to learn, hard to master

  • price

  • easy concept, for me better than Great Battles

CONS

  • no settings (music disable, resolution settings, nothing)

  • no save function - if you have no more time or game crash you have no chance to continue battle

  • no minimap

  • only a little content

  • no army builder

  • no “undo movement” button

  • no “next unit” button

  • infantry and grenadiers looks the same

BUG

  • after winning battle “Continue” button does not work

Conclusion 6/10. It is fun for 5 Euro, but missing some basic functions.
