Civil War: Battle of Petersburg

Civil War: Battle of Petersburg

For the price, what’s the risk? BATTLE OF PETERSBERG will appeal to hisorical and strategy turn based gamers. Sure, there is room for improvement, especially with the hexagonal map, camera perspective and color scheme, which make it difficult to see terrain and to select units. And, I can’t speak to historical accuracy because I’m no expert. But you get an entire campaign providing several hours of gameplay through multiple battles. The gameplay is simple and no-frills that gives artillery a lot of power (they can move, condutct ranged attack, and destroy entire units, all in one turn). Your strategy will focus on using artillery to blast away entire sections of the enemy front line, followed up by infantry to clean up anything missed by the artillery, and cavalry to exploit the hole you’ve just punched. My recollection of the Petersburg campaign is that this is basically the strategy used. Recommended despite its problems.

In short - quick and easy to play, arcade game with strategic elements. Low price but also low content.

  • Quick and easy to play

The game is far from being complex. You need only 1-2 minutes in menu to adjust all the graphic settings and the same amount of time spent using tutorial is more than enough to start first scenario. Simple rules of combat, relatively small maps as well as not much of a variety of units make the play fast and easy to finish even during eating dinner.

  • Hot seat

It is always nice addition to the simple&short games. It could be strategic game but the truth is that you won’t make complicated plans and cunning strategies as this game lacks of any strategic depth. So there is no fear to play against each other using “hot seat” option as it suits such “strategic-arcade” game.

Conquicktory

Conquicktory

Conquicktory is a minimalistic turn-based strategy focused on top-level decisions in your civilization’s development. You’ll control the diplomacy relations with neighboring countries, declare wars, plan the key strikes and distribute funds to the peaceful/military issues. Your subjects will do the rest of work - there is no need to deeply micromanage all the aspect of your glorious growing empire.

The game map has 3 views:

1. Military view. If you see a spear with a flag over one of your cities, it means that you can create an army in it. Simply touch and drag from it and you’ll see the army path. Army will capture cells around its path. The same dragging way is used to plan the movement of your existing armies. Also you can see the cells defense ratings on this view. Cells are defended by nearby armies, cities and forts.

2. Diplomacy view. Here you can select a country and see its current enemies (red) and allies (green). You can select a country and suggest a treaty to it, or declare war. Also here you can answer the treaties suggestions from other players

3. Economy view. You can see how much each of your cities brings to you, and set the funds spreading to war, peaceful growth and treasury. You can fund new cities and fortresses in this view.

Game features:

  • easy control mode which lets you focus on the top-level questions of you empire

  • simultaneous moves, which are performed once all the players have issued orders

  • challenging AI, which does not cheat but can make clever moves

  • spectator mode, where you can relax and spectate how the AI play (and try to guess the winner)

  • prebuilt maps of the world, continents and countries, which you can conquer

Death Crown

Death Crown

This is a simple, yet fast paced, game that takes me back to retro game vibes.

The main thing that pulled me in was the style of cut-scenes.

The graphics, while all 2-D pixelated, are quite enticing.

The artwork is dark medieval, and the color schemes are variable.

You beat levels to earn diamonds, to spend on upgrades.

You can upgrade gold mines, defense towers, or troop barracks.

Gold mines earn gold, towers turret intruders, barracks spawn your army.

You place the three buildings across the grid, strategically, to gain territory.

I was on the edge fist, but this is actually an awesome space & resource centric RTS–the famous Z by the Bitmap Brothers comes to mind–but Death Crown is much more minimalistic.

The in-game graphics are unusual but cool looking, however, at times it’s a difficult to see certain things in the heat of the battle (esp. in the human campaign DLC which features a lot more terrain types).

It takes some time figuring out the minute details of the simple but not really intuitive controls but this is part of the game, I think. I really like the music (which is rare) and the black-and-white line art cut scenes. However, the story is a bit vague, and only shown not told.

军团战棋Legion War

军团战棋Legion War

Just on the last weekend I played a big FFA the demo for 10.2 hours.

Then got the full game and played 2 1v1s for a combined other 5.5 hours!

It is rare that a game captivates me that much from the get go.

The AI is also quite competent already, which is part of what makes the game so fun to play. But I also see room for improvement there.

There’s some minor annoyances that could easily be improved like:

  • no hotkey for ending the turn

  • a lot of places where I first have to select something and then click a button instead of having double-click work there like with the hero-skill-tree, would be really nice if equiping items worked the same way

Legion War is a classic style turn-based conquer the world game with tons of options and depth to it. I’ve played nearly 75 hours and haven’t even touched the two campaigns currently included.

As of this review there are 5 playable factions with unique units, heroes, spells/abilities and mechanics as well as several minor factions that can be encountered in game and whose units can be recruited.

The game receives regular updates adding new and completely unexpected content, and development on the campaigns for other factions seems to be ongoing at a steady pace.

Pit People®

Pit People®

Pit people is a game I really want to recommend, but has a lot of major problems

that will keep it down.

To start off I was looking through common criticism of the game. and I found the most common 2 problems, is the game being repetitive, and the game not being very in depth, or having shallow gameplay. The reason people find this game so repetitive is because this game was designed so you will win with any strategy, and with any teamcomp in pve. even though this game has all the different units with all their different strengths and weaknesses, the average player has no real opportunity to explore this in pve, they can’t really explore how in depth the game can be, with all the different strategies and teamcomps you can do. the pve both never ramps high enough if difficulty, or at least not often enough for the average player to come across it, and even the few times the game does get difficult enough, if they do have trouble with it, there best choice won’t be counter pick units, it will be their highest level units. The game actually incentives using the same teamcomp because of the leveling system. your highest level units will outperform your lower level ones. so the game punishes you from trying something new. No shit everyone finds the game repetitive. The entire leveling system is just poor game design, and the way the game counters this is by making pve overall way easier than it needs to be, so you can get away with just about anything. so people will either mindlessly through stuff together, and just place everything in range to attack something. or they will stick with all their highest level units, and never explore other units. This is why people think the game is shallow and repetitive. either keep doing what works, and just do whatever because you can. insane mode is hardly more difficult and gives hardly any more loot, and that loot probably won’t be what you are looking for, so there isn’t really a point in ever turning it on. and permadeath mode is just grindy. because you need to keep capturing new stuff.

Pit People is a good game. I really did enjoy everything about it when I first started playing it.

QUICK SUMMARY:

When it comes to the plot and the writing, the game is clearly not trying to take itself seriously. This is one of the strenghts of the game: It’s silly and absurd, similar to that of Borderlands 2. The artstyle and the voice acting of the game, definately adds to the silly nature of the experience, and it skillfully made. The gameplay, while not perfect, is still polished and good.

HyperRogue

HyperRogue

Here’s finally my review of Hyperrogue, probably my favorite game on Steam! :)

In a nutshell, Hyperrogue can be described as a minimalist tactical roguelike in the hyperbolic plane. So, what does that mean, specifically?

First of all, it’s a minimalist roguelike, and there is no equipment, and no items except for Orbs (basically spells) which are often activated upon pick up. Hyperrogue is turn- and grid-based, and combat rules are simple: Every attack is guaranteed to hit, and is usually deadly - for monsters as well as for the player. As a roguelike, it has permadeath. To avoid accidental player deaths, the game prevents you from performing actions that immediately result in your death, though there’s a hardcore mode for the more confident players.

Real player with 728.2 hrs in game

I’ve played this game for over a hundred hours and I’m still not quite sure what to say about it! It’s certainly a weird one. But it’s a brilliant, good kind of weird that certain types of gamers should really check out.

HyperRogue is a mind-bending game of chess that takes place on a world that’s quite unlike our own. The object of the game is to collect as much treasure as possible without getting one-hit killed and succumbing to permadeath (as the ‘Rogue’ in the title might suggest) but… navigating the world is a challenge unlike any you’ve ever met before. You know how, in real life, things appear smaller as they get farther away? Like how the horizon only looks like it’s a few feet long to your eyes, when in reality it spans miles? As it turns out, on a hyperbolic plane, this effect is compounded: the horizon is much, much longer than it would be in real life. Two paths that appear near to one another will take you in completely opposite directions. The world is structured in such a way that is impossible for your poor spatial senses to intuitively understand, so scrolling something off the screen will mean that it’s probably lost forever unless you’re keeping close track of landmarks.

American Patriots: Boston Tea Party

American Patriots: Boston Tea Party

I started wargaming in the 80’s, when a flood of small, inexpensive games hit the market. Metagaming and SPI were among the first to offer a whole game for just three or four dollars. Pretty soon TSR was churning them out as well. This is very much that sort of game- hexboard, attack/defensive-move. Nothing revolutionary here (irony). But it is the sort of thing you’ll like if you like that sort of thing.

A note on the simple graphics- simple does not always mean bad. The bare-bones graphics add a lot of class and atmosphere to the game. The map is a hex grid laid over a vintage sepia map- very pretty.

Highly Recommend! For what this game is it is an absolute gem.

I bought this game and its Civil War themed sequel for only $1. I already love these games, and I haven’t even tried any of the multi player modes yet. This game’s not without a couple of forgivable flaws. If your mouse has a high DPI rate, you might want to use keyboard controls to navigate.

These games eliminate the biggest downside to table top war games. Most games take a long time to set up, and even longer to get past the “Opening Game” phase where you move toward engaging the enemy. For true fans of tactical board games this game would be a bargain even at a cost of several dollars. If the devs wanted to, they could easily add a few simple features like more maps that would make this game a great value even at a cost of $5 or more.

For The King

For The King

For the King is a great tabletop rogue-like adventure game. It supports up to 3 players but you can also play solo and control 3 characters. The game a has a lot of replayability with there because different campaigns you can run and different team comps you can build.

Story-wise there isn’t much. Like it introduces one and it’s there, but it’s there’s not much to it and it’s uninteresting. At least I felt that way. I honestly can’t even remember what the main campaign was about.

This game is entirely based on RNG and that’s a huge turn off for some people. Most of the negative reviews are because this is the way the game is structured. If you like trying to maximize your RNG chances or succeeding a 20% chance roll then I highly recommend this game. If you don’t like the concept of RNG controlling everything then maybe stay away. Even if you aren’t too good at the game there’s a lot of game rule modifiers that make the game a lot easier.

Great Game With Friends

Overall, I would say this is a pretty good game if you have friends to play this with. I would never personally play this game by myself or with randoms, but find this game to be an enjoyable experience. To get a better idea of this game, think of D&D if it were laid out on an actual board for you. It works a lot like that in my opinion with options on predefined missions to go on and different modes to play on.
