BloodRayne: Terminal Cut

BloodRayne: Terminal Cut

The “Don’t Escape Trilogy” is a collection of three short first-person point-and-click adventures with static screens (no camera movement, no scrolling). The games share a creepy atmosphere and a few gameplay mechanics, but are otherwise unrelated. In the first game, you play a werewolf trying to lock himself away before a full-moon night, so that he won’t kill anyone when he turns. In the second game, you’re trying to barricade a house and protect yourself from a zombie horde. In the third game, you’re the only surviving crew member on a spaceship and need to stop “something” from getting out.

Even though the entire trilogy is available for free on Armor Games, I chose to purchase this game series on Steam because that’s how amazing ScriptWelder really is. The Deep Sleep and Don’t Escape series were some of the first PC games I ever played, and I have ScriptWelder to thank for making my early experiences so magical. I have followed each and every game you have published on AG, hunted down every achievement, set of choices, and walkthrough I could find… simply, because every single second I spent in any of your games was one of either awe, wonder, fear, or curiosity.

I’ve had an awesome time playing Mad Devils so far! The plot is really interesting and I can’t wait to restart in Inferno Mode. My favourite characters are Chester and Harris so far, and the boss fights are brutal. If you’re a fan of Diablo 3 or Dark Souls, this game definitely scratches that itch. Haven’t hit any bugs so far. Just remember you can use your Blood Shards and XP points in the Pause Menu to upgrade your characters, it’s a lifesaver!

This indie developed game has very faded washed out graphics, repetitive dull combat, no mini-map to show where you are going, no way to rotate the camera, and frame rate issues as well. Camera movement is also sluggish and stuttery, most likely due to the crap Unity engine the game runs on. The game also flashes to the desktop briefly every time a new level is loaded. Your character also seems to get stuck on everything in your path and every level looks the same, taking place mostly in outdoor fields surrounded by lava. A similar game that is MUCH better is Victor Vran. I would much rather play Victor Vran than this game any day.

There are still problems with this “final” version. The biggest problem is the rotation of the scene. Rotations are limited to 90 Degrees or none at all. It should have been simple to allow an incremental rotation or even, at the lest, a 45 degree rotation, but keeping the rotation limited to 90 degrees often means searching for a view, ANY view, of the target area. It is difficult, time wasting, and frustrating … and unprofessional.

The loadout limitations on the characters are simply absurd. As someone who has humped 50 to 100 pounds into combat, I know that you can carry a weapon wih both a scope And an extended magazine, a pistol (though not a pistol with a scope) along with a couple of grenades of various sorts, a k-bar, an entrenching tool, a radio, water, food, more water, ammo, more water, more ammo … However, this is a game (the cry will go up). Why not limit the characters stupidly; one weapons mod, one extra “item”. Because it shows the imagination limits of the designers?

I just finished the story of Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics on normal mode, so I think it’s time for a review!

Let me start by saying it could have been an amazing game. Instead it’s just…an “ok” game. It’s not bad but it’s also not brilliant. The combat mechanics are nothing new but they are interesting enough (and that is probably what made me kept me playing until the end). The soundtrack is appropriate for this game’s theme as well as the sound effects.

However, I have a few issues with the game and here are some aspects that could be improved:
