The Curse Of Yendor

The Curse Of Yendor

True roguelikes are hard to find, especially the ones that are commercialized and sold on Steam. The Curse of Yendor is one of these rare ones. Developed by IBOLOGY LLC (Bob Saunders), the same guy behind the cult classic Approaching Infinity , The Curse of Yendor offers a good experience for both newcomers and veterans of the roguelike genre, providing both the traditional YASD experience as well easier difficulty levels and the possibility to disable permadeath, if you wanna play it like a regular RPG.

Bought Curse of Yendor on a lark with all this extra cash I’ve got now that Marvel Heroes doesn’t want my money any more (BUE bleh).

Yendor is a turn-based rogue-a-like with charming early Ultima graphics. Under the retro hood is a lot of gaming goodness. Besides the usual monsters, loot, vendors, keys and puzzles, there are some surprises.

The procedural, modifiable, tile-based terrain system is what sold me on getting CoY. If you get a pick you can chop through stone walls, or take them down with an earthquake spell. You can shoot thorugh barred windows. You can freze water. Reeds block missiles, but if you cast fireballs in reeds, you can catch yourself on fire. Run away! Destroying the right tiles will weaken the big boss later in the game. I’d love to see a game with triple the variable terrain types as CoY, but for now, this is a lot of fun.

The game has nice classic feel to it., it’s old school hack and slash, but with tactics. The graphics ar simple and funny and the spoken commentary is dwarfish-hammy. The masonry is amazing, of course.

What’s the best way to start an adventure to find 7 shards that will grant Torgar the ultimate power? Armed with nothing but clean underwear and a lunch, of course!

This is a rogue-like dungeon crawl, questing ever downward in search of the seven shards. It has three difficulty levels, and anyone with a decent sense for this type of game will probably win in “Normal” mode after a handful of games. Hard mode is considerably more difficult, and nightmare mode is just that - swarms of baddies following you through the dungeon and trying to trap you in corners.

This is tough, because I love this game and it’s concept. It’s so fun! I have a lot of praise for it.

Unfortunately, I feel like I can’t recommend it at this time for two reasons:

  1. Missing basics like any type of saving, which pretty much everything I’ve played since the days of shareware has had, seems quite sloppy. The display of the amount of hours I’ve played isn’t really correct: most of that has been on pause because I didn’t want to exit and lose all my progress on the run.

  2. Do you know how my last run ended? No? Neither do I. Based on all the information I had, it didn’t make sense. Many key things are just not explained, so new players are going to go through several baptisms by fire, creating a lot of frustration.

Pretty solid roguelike with emphasis on speedy playthroughs and choosing your next step, though that can be its weakness too. Its big selling points are the 30+ races and crazy class combinations which are very very satisfying to play with, as well as actual honest-to-god necromancy where you can have a zombie horde if you want. Or you could skip zombies altogether, dominate the minds of your enemies, send them at your foes, blow up their (animate or inanimate) corpses into a huge mess when they die and then revive them and your former foes as skeletons. Full crafter build is viable, and thats before we get onto races. Pretty much anything that spawns in the dungeon is something you can unlock and play pretty quickly. Only exception afaik is the slime MAN (you can be a regular slime) but I suspect that’ll be implemented in time.

Living the Nightmare

Living the Nightmare

no horror, not enough blood, not disgusting at all.

it is something like small version of turnbased crimson land.

if you are not into modern graphics and stuff and you are in search for some 30 minutes single session of killing monsters roguelite - it is for you.

advice: turn off ingame music and play some black/grind/funeral of your own collection.

EDIT: vote for game to be more disgusting! (and more stuff).

EDIT: ok, it is not a great-great-great game, also it has frustrating/gamebreaking bugs. but it is sure playable and i just want to support devs a little with positive review. still recommend, yeah!!!

Afar as game that try to somehow fit in the rouge like genre this is one of the more interesting. The tutorial level goes by fast and unfortunately you can’t go back ( at least I don’t know how. ) I like the hex format and overall style of the game , The combat is fitting for what they are trying to do. The only thing that really irritates me is the height thing. Its a pretty addicting little game. I am sure there are those who have ignited all of the shrines but that is not me as of yet. Its fairly cheap price wise so if you like rouge type games and horror definitely pick this up,

I rarely write superlatives, but this game is the worst thing happened to me since I’ve lost a degree to Angband 20 years ago. I’m hooked. Yes, controls could be more polished, but I do not mind. I love it.

While fun at a very reasonable price, I found myself wanting a bit more in the world above the dungeon. The world seems like a small cross section or single screen of what at first feels like a larger continent or Island. It was disappointing to walk to the edg and find out that there was no continuation to this forest or path as it is simply a jarring invisible edge to the ‘world’. A minor thing, but it did make the game seem smaller and restrictive to be sure.

My main concern (and maybe I missed something) was this: Each type of item/weapon/etc has its own store NPCs vendors and they will not purchase equipment that is not part of their store. For example, you cant sell pole arms to a sword store. Even the ‘general’ store has very specific items that they deal in and will not buy anything from you that is not specifically tied to that store. Not a thing. While this seems completely reasonable at first glance, the problem I found was that there is no guarantees as to which NPCs will be generated in the town each time a world is generated. You could end up with 3 vendors in the generated town and 2 of them are swords only and one general vendor. Good luck looting anything of value that you can make any profit off of. So I either end up with a bag full of equipment that I cant sell at all, or I just end up with piles of items laying on the ground because they’re of no use what so ever. A more fleshed out town/world would go a long way and help alleviate the feeling of the game feeling smaller than it is.

Tons of bugs still, I understand that it’s still alpha but there are a lot of game breaking bugs. It’s taking the devs a long time to even acknowledge the bugs. Every time they fix one bug they create another.

It has potential as game but I wouldn’t recommend playing until they fix quite a bit of it

Finally I grinded this out for a 100% completion (though I haven’t got 2 artifacts that are randomly dropped from level 5)

I must say: this game is great! It is fabulous! But it is not well balanced, though. So I will point out some pros and cons for this product. Before that, I truly recommend this beautiful game to everyone!

What I like in this game? First of all, it is not purely and completely randomly generated. I read a lot of reviews that said stuff like: “Uh, this game sucks, it is so random. I got to level 2 and died, because there was a mage that dealt 50 damage to me.” and “I can’t win a single game, it is too hard, the game kills me every time, it is based on luck only!” and I want to say to all of this reviewers. “Guys, you suck!” If you can’t play the game the way you want to play and making stupid mistakes you die all the time, it is not a bad game, it is bad skill and understandment of how to play it!

Most of the negative reviews posted here are true. While luck and chance play a great part of being successful in this game, the amount of actual strategy is minimal. This does not make the game unplayable or not fun, but it does make it short lived and boring after some time. First of all, the player must realize that Hack, Slash, Loot is totally item based. The hero does not level up or improve statistics by earning experience points. All alterations, positive and negative are dependent on items that you equip or interact with. Because of this deliberate design limitation, there is very little to be done in terms of experimenting with strategy. The player stumbles upon items, hovers over them, and compares the numerical statistics with the already equipped items, and then makes a decision on what to keep and what to leave behind. The potions, altars, and other items that the player is allowed to interact with are complete surprises, changing your attributes at random without giving the player a choice. The sound effects get annoying and distracting after a while and I feel are not a good match for the art style and setting, sounding out of place. I beat a few of the quests and picked up some of the rare relics, but after the third quest win, I had had enough. Winning the quests simply does not feel rewarding and fulfilling. It seems more like a chore or a painful test rather than anything else, but in the beginning, when you realize how to approach the game, it’s fun for some hours. Learning the enemies' vulnerabilities and resistances can be fun at first, but the game quickly outstays its welcome and becomes boring and shallow.

The World is Your Weapon

The World is Your Weapon

Story & Dialogue

The story is fairly simple, since it’s mainly about a weapon merchant, Weaco, trying to find a legendary sword due to her love of weaponry. The closest thing it has to an aesop is the third ending, where Weaco has to consider what needs to be done in a peaceful world where the antagonist is defeated, which is something that not all stories address properly. The simplicity doesn’t hurt the game too much, since it seems to be mostly focused on humor and gameplay, though I wish there were more quests and lore associated with the bosses of the game.

I don’t normally enjoy games made from RPGMaker, but I enjoyed this one more than I could have expected. I ran into it randomly while browsing, watched the trailer, laughed, and bought it without hesitation. This game has made me laugh like an idiot many times, and it’s also a lot of fun.

I recommend you avoid reading other reviews so you don’t spoil some of the surprises, but let’s just say you can pick up anything…ANYTHING…and use it as a weapon. You can even huck it in your enemy’s face.

Hero of Not Our Time

Hero of Not Our Time

I’m recommending this game based on what it could be and on its innovation rather than the gameplay.

This game has a lot of interesting ideas that are badly implemented (and need fixing):

Good idea: Lootboxes for Rogue-like gameplay.

Bad Implementation: RNG is crappy for no reason.

(Late-game, I stopped opening chests because it wasn’t worth it.)

Fix: Improve RNG.

Good Idea: Cybernetic Upgrades.

Bad Implementation: No explanations of items, uses, etc.

Fix: Add explanations for each item.

Good Idea: Modular Weaponry.

Where do I even start…

Every time I try to find something good about this game, I seem to find something wrong. “Initial aesthetics are pleasing! Oh, those enemies with no animation, just static sprite wobble, are ugly as sin.” “Soundtrack seems pretty bangin'! At least it was the first three levels, getting tired of it starting over instead of looping every level transition for the next seven.” “It’s mouse aim, you can’t screw that up! But now it’s not locked to the game field and I’m clicking menus instead of shooting.”

Something happened. You wake up in a forest. Now you have to survive! Run, the ents are coming!

This is a great game and try to be cautious, surviving the first night won’t be the best. I started to think the best way is just running for your life. This is a complicated survival game or complicated and funny survival game where you have to create the best shelter to avoid the enemies at night. Yeah, they are not so great at day but the skeletons.. and other things, you know. They going to destroy your shelter. Now you know!

TL:DR: Cheap but fun roguelike survival game, some way to go before it’s finished, but well worth the price with the current content! 7.5/10

Review

Rogue Harvest is a roguelike survival game, with permadeath and gameplay similar to that of hardcore Minecraft or Terraria. In Rogue Harvest you play as the survivor of a plane crash fighting to make sense of and survive in the hostile world in which he’s found himself. The gameplay is fun and currently semi-deep, there’s several tiers of content for each item (from 2-4 depending on the item) and you are free to create some awesome looking houses to defend yourself with.
