dmc meets mgr meets dooms it has both hack and slash and shooters elements. I give it solid 6/7 out of 10. The combat is alright at times but slightly jank at times but hopefully when the game is fully released today the combat is more polished. Another bonus you can wear a school uniform.

Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae

Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae

It’s not too often than I walk down the street and decide that my life plagued by the lack of indie hack and slashes in my life, but whenever I am Steam is there to save the day with a hanky, a knife, and a picture of a waifu.

In Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae, a very SEO friendly name, you play as a Mitsurugi out to Kamui Hikae. Probably just means Blade Templar Maiden, haven’t the foggiest.

Your stages are all various flavours of circle and your combat is aiming to hack and slash with the best of them. Why, you’ve got your launchers, your forward and neutral ground combos, your alt combo and your weird katana meter that dictates how much katana you can katana. That can be upgraded to 9 separate full magic bars.

Real player with 19.6 hrs in game

It’s a fun game. Really fun in my opinion. It’s a stylish arena hack and slash game. If you’re a fan of stuff like anime, you’ll probably think the combat is awesome. You slash up enemies with your sword at hyper-fast speeds and as you sheathe your sword, they all fall down, instantly dead. It’s pretty cool.

The graphics aren’t anything mind-blowing, but it looks pretty good and gets the job done. Honestly, it could have been all stick figure people and the game would hold up just as well. The real strength of the game is in mastering the combat. The main character, Misa, and her nemesis, Suzuka, both look well animated. Many reviews/comments seem extremely focused on the fact that you get glimpses of panties, but the combat is so fast paced that I’ve never really noticed. The enemies all look kinda bland, besides the bosses. They are mostly just robot businessmen (I guess…) with a few different colored suits. I suppose the giant robot enemies look kinda cool, too.

Good ass game. SUCH responsive controls. If there are more games out there with such smooth and responsive combat, I’d like to know which ones! I wish the cutscenes were easier to skip, but that is my ONLY complaint.

Blades of Time

Blades of Time

If I had to describe this game with one word, that would be: FUN!

Successfully blending elements from games like Prince of Persia, Bloodrayne, Tomb Raider, Devil May Cry and God of War, Blades of Time accomplishes quite a lot, considering it came almost out of nowhere (except a prequel, of sorts) and from a mostly unknown gaming company.

The game greatly manages to establish its world and lore, without weighing too much on them: the story is centered on an adventure guild, which, through a magic sphere operated by its guildmaster, sends its members in a remote mythical island called Dragonland, that is rumored to contain many treasures, as well as dangers.

Blades of time, You play the role of Ayumi who is a duel wielding sword user who is out to find treasure in the mysterious world of Dragon land. While looking for treasure you unfold a story of immortal beaning, chaos, humans, and other unknown creatures in this beautifully design world.

While this game is your tipcial hack n slash game. You are gifted with the powers of magic and time. You are able to rewind time back and use your “clones” to help kill certain monsters or help figure out puzzles.

BloodRayne Betrayal (Legacy)

BloodRayne Betrayal (Legacy)

If you are familiar with the Bloodrayne series, then I must first warn you that it plays nothing like the previous games, an open mind is required should you decide to purchase. This is a challenging platform brawler that has 15 stages in total, not a Metroidvania with free roam. You can obtain secret skulls that can extend your life bar or bullet count, but you won’t unlock new move sets or level up.

In terms of graphics, I feel the screenshots didn’t do it much justice. While it may look like a flash game in still frames, the animation is extremely smooth and pleasant to look at. The stage backdrops are detailed and befitting in most cases, while the blood splatters never gets old. I do have some gripes on the lack of variety though, as every single enemy of the same type will look the same every time, not even a colour swap, this was just plain lazy.

OK, look at screenshots. That’s it. End of the story. BloodRayne: Betrayal is one of those rare games that look almost exactly as they feel. What can you expect from something that looks like this? Naturally, a tiny little spin-off that has pretty much nothing with the original series. Might & Magic Heroes, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles, HALO: Spartan Assault, Magicka: Wizards of the Square Tablet… You know the drill. And even though this game is not really important as a part of the BloodRayne series? Gameplay here sure does deserve your attention. See, BloodRayne: Betrayal is a game from WayForward Technologies. The guys who made the very first Shantae, Contra 4 and surprisingly great Aliens Infestation. And even though BloodRayne: Betrayal is not as good as those games above… it tries. It sure does.

BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites

BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites

Pros:

-Fluid and fast-paced hack & slash 2D action

-Game supports up to 120fps

-It works fine on both keyboard and Xbox gamepad controller

-Laura Bailey and Troy Baker are back to play as Rayne and Kagan

-Game can now render sprites at true 4k resolution (3840 x 2160)

-Decent blood & gore physics

-You can now select difficulty between Classic and Standard when starting new game

-Combo attacks and Dash mechanic feels smooth, snappy, and responsive

-2D artstyle was perfect; I love the atmosphere, filled with enriched music

Real player with 714.3 hrs in game

A lot like the good old Castlevania games with difficult platforming and all. If you get good with the shmoovement you can pretty much fly across levels and the combat is a lot of fun.

My main complaint is how slowly Rayne turns around. I can’t tell you how many times I try to turn around and shoot only for the turning animation to be canceled and shoot off screen. PLEASE devs reduce time to turn around by half and combat would feel great. Also adding the Japanese main menu art as an option would really put a chef’s kiss on the entire package.

Video Review:

https://youtu.be/kK11wud9diY

I received ICEY as part of a bundle with the Steam Link. Actually, I bought the Steam Link and got ICEY with it, but I was curious about why it was the game to be featured in the Steam Link Bundle, so I put it in my queue, though near the bottom. Well, it’s time to finally look at ICEY and figure out what’s so special about it.

NOTE: This review is still being updated constantly to accomadate to any changes in my opinion and updates of the game itself.

INTRODUCTION

ICEY seemed like a great game. It’s beautiful, and I was extremely curious. I’m a mad fan of hack and slash games, and I wanted to get another one. But a lot of reviews seemed to be negative while also being positive at the same time. I could tell this sort of game was a gamble, and I was worried I wouldn’t like it.

But, a lot of steam curators recommended the game, so I bought it and tested it out. I had loved The Stanley Parable, which, was found in ICEY according to many players. I was pretty doubtful that it wouldn’t be that good, but I really don’t regret my decision. I enjoyed the game, it was INCREDIBLE fun killing monsters, and was very unique.
