Melordandek

Melordandek

Nice game with plenty of levels to play, the difficulty increases step-by-step, and if you get stuck to a level you can use another path and come back later to the level. It is quite addictive and you can be quickly hooked (or hanged :) ) to this.

Some points may be enhanced for a smoother gameplay:

  • if you lose in a level and press “space”, try again the level instead of going back to the selection menu

  • when you keep “return” key pressed, keep reverting moves instead of just removing one

  • a tutorial to know how to use the cracks

edit: 30 levels and some quality of life stuff got added, so I edited the review a bit. then the price got lowered, so edited it again.

melordandek is essentially a draw a single line puzzler, the don’t step on the same tile twice variety, same general idea. 345(!) levels, divided unevenly into 10 zones as the visual novel-style story keeps unfolding, voiced in french (horrible quality from what little I heard), not voiced in english. cutscenes can be reviewed in the main menu, separate volume settings, brightness, lots of color manipulation, even a grayscale option, windowed mode and resolutions, plus the all-important timer toggle in case you don’t want to be bothered or stressed out by a time limit.

Worm Jazz

A fun and clever little puzzle game that requires thinking ahead before each move. Really like the undo enabling backtracking for those times you take a wrong turn, very intuitive keyboard and mouse assignment as well. Lovely little gem, highly recommended!

This game will make you reconsider your life and seek more harmonious friendships than the one I have with the developer of the game.

A solid title, possibly has a shot to be the GOTY.

A short little game about a Space Invader going blind.

All jokes aside, definitely worth picking up for an hour or two of fun, especially considering the price.

Inferno - Beyond the 7th Circle

Inferno - Beyond the 7th Circle

Inferno - Beyond the 7th Circle is a first-person RPG with a horror theme that’s a sequel/spiritual successor to The 7th Circle - Endless Nightmare. Plot-wise there’s no connection between the two games–in the 7th Circle you played a man’s subconscious fighting his inner demons, and in Inferno you play a human survivor fighting literal demons who have all but conquered Earth.

It’s hard to review Inferno without comparing it to the 7th Circle because the two games are so similar. Both are first-person dungeon crawlers, and the basic gameplay of the two games are identical. Nearly all of the enemies are identical too. (there are only 7 or so new ones not counting palette swaps) If you liked one you’ll probably like the other, and vice versa. Where the games differ is that The 7th Circle was restricted to a single dungeon with 20-odd floors and had a permadeath/metaprogression mechanic; Inferno is more of a sprawling open world and abandons the permadeath model for a more traditional RPG.

Pros:

-Enjoyed character customization and the control given to me for said character growth.

-Enjoyed RNG rolls for gear.

-Enjoyed combo build up in combat.

-Enjoyed utilizing spells and status ailments for a varied combat experience.

-Enjoyed the 1st 2/3rd of the game in terms of difficulty.

-The setting is very unique and I feel it will likely become the new sensation as cyberpunk dies down.

-Enjoyed punching out demon lords and the duke of hell with my bare hands 10/10 would fist hell spawn again~

Aeon of Sands - The Trail

Aeon of Sands - The Trail

Aeon of Sands is an unconventional dungeon crawler with a unique aesthetic, witty writing and gameplay that will challenge even the most seasoned player.

The action takes place across a large number of dungeons reachable via a world map which is vaguely reminiscent of some older games in the genre (SSI Gold Box games / Realms of Arkania). However not all locations are accessible in a single playthrough with many areas being accessible only if you make certain choices, have certain objects or party members. The “dungeons” are not strictly underground complexes either but include cities, outdoor areas, installations, etc…

In short the game is nice, but it has many annoying shortcomings.

I liked:

  • the world and its spotty lore, it is well done.

  • the retro graphic is exactly i was hoped for.

  • quest story is not so great. I expected something more heroic, but it fits well into the world setting.

  • dungeons are large and full of illusion walls and secret buttons. It is fun to find them, but also it is mandatory, so it could be frustrating on long run.

I didn’t like in UI:

  • text descriptions was artistic but strange, like it was written by a non-english writer.

Guards of the Gate

Guards of the Gate

I am definitely having fun with this game, so I can recommend it. I didn’t really like it at first, but as I experimented with the different team combinations and learned more about the game play, I really started to get into it.

This isn’t a fancy game. You create a team of three characters. Mutant, Knight, Ninja, Ranger, Wizard, and Shaman. You navigate a world map by moving from spot to spot. Each spot is either empty, has a battle grid with monsters, has a reward statute, has a merchant, has a new skill, etc. The maps aren’t that big.

I like turn-based tactic games, and I am hardcore gamer who dedicated many hours to the XCOM series. However, sometimes I turn to obviously more simple games, like Guards of the Gate.

Pros:

  • Nice look, for the game of that kind quite fair;

  • Interesting map system without out-of-battle healing and statues which strengthen teams in next runs;

  • Some skills that I have not encountered in other games of this type;

  • Simple but enjoyable battle system on small hexagonal fields.

Cons:

  • The game is very badly balanced, for now. Some classes are more useful than others; teams of certain type make walkthrough very easy, and others - very hard, but irritating hard, because of bad skills combination and artificial weaknesses. This is very important, because for turn-based tactic game to be replayable it must have various strategies and approaches. Now there is only one effective approach.

Godless Tactics

Godless Tactics

TL;DR, Solid turn-based RPG with plenty of tactics and strategies that will bring dozens of hours of enjoyment, and plenty of replayability. Video from developer that shows gameplay for those wanting to see how the game works.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAIdJqNfcrM

This game could best be described as a mix of Fire Emblem and Total War. While not as shiny and new as the more recent editions of those franchises, it definitely has the depth of strategy and story that either have. As someone who doesn’t really get that endorphin kick from Fire Emblem-esque games, I wasn’t sure I would get a significant amount from the combat. But I was wrong: Godless Tactics has a very simple, yet deep, combat system that makes proper strategy feel rewarded. I greatly enjoyed thinking about what to do on my turn, and every counterattack and loss felt honestly deserved. But boy oh boy, does methodically slaughtering the enemy feel even better.

Haven’t had this much fun with a strategy game in years!

In this game, there’s real strategic value in exploring remote areas, or in raiding supply lines while avoiding larger armies, or in reinforcing key locations on the map into massive chokepoints, in short, lots of stuff you can do to meaningfully contribute to your allies' war effort apart from the obvious conquest of settlements. High-level weapons and items that you may find allow you to take on foes way more numerous or higher-level than yourself, and different classes naturally excel at the different tasks detailed above.
