NEXT JUMP: Shmup Tactics

NEXT JUMP: Shmup Tactics

Well now, it’s time to review yet another roguelike… or is it a turn-based strategy game? Bullet-hell? Yep, Next Jump: Shmup Tactics is all three of these things at once. These genres seem like they absolutely should not go together… it sounds totally nonsensical. But not only is the combination viable, but it works out really well here.

In this game, your overall goal is to reach the Dragon Mothership and defeat it, because apparently they stole your space beer (???) and ran off with it. Like any good shmup, this means a long battle through about a kersquillion enemy ships on your way to fight the boss at the end. As this game is part roguelike, everything is procedural, so you’ll be getting a very different experience every time.

This is a fantastic game if you like small-scale turn-based tactical battles in space. The core gameplay is turn-based shoot ‘em up with simplified FTL-like sector jumping in between the skirmishes. It’s not really much like FTL except superficially. It’s a great game nonetheless!

First, the downsides. It’s a relatively short game. It’s very replayable but even if you like it, you probably won’t play for many tens of hours. It’s also cheap though.

The battle map is small and doesn’t contain much except various enemies. Not realy a downside in my opinion, just a game design choice. Think of the map as a chess board.

A Circle Among Squares

A Circle Among Squares

You’re a circle. You’re the good guy. But you’re surrounded by squares. Some are irrelevant. Others are useful and/or annoying. Then there are the black squares. They want to kill you. They are the bad guys. Be a good guy and pulverize those baddies, will you?

Survive and shoot all enemies in 200 levels (or make them shoot themselves). Each level cleared opens the next one permanently (autosave). Enemies come in a variety of types, speeds and action patterns, while other squares do a multitude of things, ranging from reflecting bullets to teleporting you. Enemies are killed with a single hit, and so do you. Failing a level has no consequences. While the first levels are easy and often, very quick, difficulty increases greatly in later levels.

Game Elements

This a reflective block. Nothing can pass it and bullets are reflected.

This is a selective block. Only enemy bullets may pass it.

This is a selective block. Only bullets coming from the same direction the arrow is facing may pass it. Has 4 variations.

This is a reflective/deflective block. Depending on the direction of the bullet, it may turn 90º or be reflected. Has 4 variations.

This is a teleportation square. It always comes in a single pair and only you can step over it.

This is a hole. It blocks movement but not bullets.

I dont play stealth games often but this was actually not that bad. Apart from the gore it has. The enemies AI walk into thier own traps HAHA probably the most funny thing about this game I would say you should probably buy this when its on discount otherwise there are better games. Good game. Needs more Updates and Levels
