Shatter

Shatter

Shatter is the best Breakout game I have ever played, It took the best of the classic and improved on it, You can suck, blow, shoot, shield, Fire as many balls as you want and there even are bosses.

The game has a bunch of gamemodes, Story mode which takes you through the 10 chapters which all have a bunch of levels, Some are horizontal some are vertical some are even round, And at the end of each chapter there is a boss level, Which is just super cool, Boss levels in a breakout game, The bosses are very well made, After the boss level you get a bonus level and then on to the next chapter.

Shatter is a visually amazing brick breaking game with the best soundtrack of its genre. Whether you keep it old school and rely solely on your skills of maneuvering the “bat” and hitting the ball at the right angle or if you use the new “Suck” & “Blow” gameplay mechanics to help guide the ball where you need it to be, this easy to play yet challenging to master game will give you hours upon hours of enjoyment. And don’t forget the “Shard Storm” should you need help taking out some bricks or just want to eliminate the bosses faster.

Aces Wild: Manic Brawling Action!

Aces Wild: Manic Brawling Action!

A couple years back I was playing one of my favourite games: Street Fighter, with my friends, and I had a vision.

I saw a group of us playing a game with lots of colourful flashes, nice fast chip-tune style music, and even faster gameplay. We were all having tonnes of fun, and were really focused on the game, it looked awesome.

The image of the game was not apparent, all I saw was rainbows, and so I had no idea as to what this mystery game may be.

I searched and searched for a long time and found nothing.

I playtested this, bought it on Humble Store, and now am playing and loving Aces Wild on Steam. Since its Humble Store release I’ve spent dozens and dozens of hours playing, and my time with this game is far from over.

The controls are easy to pickup but are incredibly precise. You can do crazy combos and fly around the screen with your aerial-powered fighter using a minimal amount of buttons.

The game is challenging but fair. Cliche statement, yes, but true in the case of Aces Wild. Nothing that the game throws at you is outside is unbeatable if you’ve got the skill.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed

Bionic Commando: Rearmed

Bionic Commando was a decent enough arcade action game, when it debuted in 1987. Cartoonish, tricky, demanding, full of genuinely vexing little obstacles here and there. Its NES port, technically a sequel to the arcade game, remains the gold standard “home version that clobbered its arcade counterpart” in my book, adding many more stages, many more enemies and obstacles, and some genuinely hair-bristling cruel and unforgiving claw-swinging physics challenges that made you feel really accomplished when you finally cleared them. Bionic Commando was the first NES game I finished, partly due to being a very late arrival to the NES world, but partly also because it was the first game I owned to seem, frankly, as though its unfolding story justified the work involved. I felt like I’d really accomplished something, the day I finally arrived at that endscreen with Joe’s signature.

Easily one of the best games of the PS3/360 era and from back when Capcom was willing to experiment both with new IPs and with their wide library of existing IPs to the point of reviving old forgotten franchises such as Bionic Commando and Dark Void (With varying results overall) and also from a time where they outsourced a lot of their projects to North American and European companies (In this case, the game was developed by GRIN. A company which eventually transformed into OVERKILL and went on to develop PAYDAY: The Heist on the same engine as this game).

Demons with Shotguns

Demons with Shotguns

This game is like a faster paced towerfall except with demons and shotguns. The gameplay is really fun and addicting but it lacks in playable levels, guns, and characters. It was made with Unity. Hopefully the devs make this game bigger since it really is a hell-of-a-lot of fun. Oh, and its funny as hell too. The angel is the funniest and the commentator sounds like the dude from honest trailers: “Frag em all.” All in all, if you want a funny game the play with your mates, this could be a good hour spent but if you’re looking for hours of gameplay, look elsewhere. Until they add more to the game like interesting levels, a level editor, more characters, more guns, more traps, more awesomeness, I cannot fully say that this game is amazing enough to warrant it a perfect score. I give it a 6-7/10.

Demons with Shotguns is a local multiplayer action game that gets pretty close to the enjoyment of Duck Game, Towerfall: Ascension, etc. Its focus is mostly on using a variety of items to change the basic gameplay of “shoot enemy with shotgun”. There are also quite a few maps to play on so the game rarely gets stale. You can also block bullets with a shield, adding a new element to the game that helps build up the chaos in a 4 person free-for-all. Overall, I still prefer Duck Game, but Demons with Shotguns is still in the rotation when we get together to play.

Rayman® Legends

Rayman® Legends

Rayman Legends is quite possibly the best 2d platformer released in the past 10 years.

It’s the follow up title to Rayman Origins (also a great game) and if you missed it, 40 of the stages from Origins have been included in Legends as additional re-mastered content.

It features over 120 different stages each with varying atmosphere, amazing music, and plenty of hidden collectibles. Each of the levels are hand drawn and beautiful to look at. Despite not being overly impressive on a technical level, Rayman uses a timeless style. While games like Crysis 3 probably won’t look that great 10 years from now, Rayman Legends will no doubt retain its charm.

Rayman Legends is absolutely legendary. However, if you plan on playing single player, you are missing out on one of THE best co-op games of all time. I’m not even sure what the storyline nor do I care, because the gameplay is reason enough to play through this side scrolling platformer.

The graphics are gorgeous with what looks like handdrawn sprites in 3D worlds. The animation is smooth, fluid, and the control of the characters are on point. At times the game moves really fast where you have to run constantly or face death, and other times you can explore the level at your own pace. It is fun to watch, and even more fun to play.

Rayman® Origins

Rayman® Origins

Rayman Origins is my favorite 2D platformer ever; it’s probably the best ever made. It comes from Ubisoft Montpellier - a studio that is, by all counts, the least dank and sticky of all the dank and sticky folds of Ubisoft’s titanic corporate mass. Montpellier is responsible for Beyond Good & Evil, as well as the original Rayman titles. I never played the original Raymen, so I’m not at liberty to say whether or not this ‘prequel’ in massive quotes actually tells us much about the origins of Mr. Man - what makes him tick, why he does what he does. Quite honestly I’ve pumped dozens of hours into this game and I’m still not 100% on what he does, let alone why. More importantly, I couldn’t care less - Rayman Origins could be about a man named Billy Forks with forks for hands who fights AIDS with the power of friendship for all I’m interested in the story, as long as it looks, sounds, and plays like this.

Except for the game breaking bugs (I’m lucky that I only faced one of them and able to get past it after several tries), it’s a really good game.

The Good:

  • Amazing artwork / graphics.

  • The flow of the game is really good. You’ll see what I mean when you try to run a level in time trial mode.

  • Level design is really good. In most of the levels, you’ll see that there are several ways to complete a level. At first try, you can play slowly and try every single opening to collect all lums. For the second try, you’ll realize that some of those openings / change in route is there to support your time trial activities. Although, I’d loved if they used the dimension changing mushrooms more like they used in the mobile versions Jungle Run and Fiesta Run.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Collection

I like Sonic games but I’ve never been a huge fan. I do however love an arcade racing game and this is the best one I’ve played. The list of games this is better than is long, but it beats out Mario Kart and the Nickelodeon clone by a mile. Drifting quickly becomes intuitive, the AI usually isn’t as cheaty as other games, and the items are well balanced. There’s a decent variety of characters to choose from, many of which are from obscure SEGA properties which really helps if you don’t want to just play as Sonic or Knuckles.

Children of the Eclipse

Children of the Eclipse

Children of the Eclipse is a traditional 2-player retro shooter at heart, wrapped in next-gen graphics, set in a unique far future utopian sci-fi world teeming with life.

Pilot and Flexbucket are a pair of Synthesizers on Planet O-2, where societies are built on scientific research, not on wealth or the strength of an army. Their job is to collect scientific theories and synthesize new ones in the Fringe Zone, a border zone of utopian civilization. Usually, it’s a pretty easy-going job of hanging around with interesting people, having parties and fending off wildlife and a few Nasty Boys with non-lethal stun guns, but things quickly take a more serious turn when an advanced Flex-unit goes missing…

Hardcore 2 player retro shooter at heart

Taking inspiration from classics old and new, while adding some spice of its own, Children of the Eclipse’s core gameplay is the definition of easy to play, hard to master. Although the game has an immersive action-adventure storyline, the gameplay is never interrupted with cut-scenes or walls of text.

1- and 2-player game modes

Flexbot’s AI core can take over the controls when your friends are not around.

Rich world populated by unforgettable characters

Planet O-2 is full of life, both familiar and strange. Get ready to accept side quests from singing rocks, party with mercenary DJs and fight with stem cell researchers in mind control suits.

Destructible environment

We know you like destroying stuff. The levels in Children of the Eclipse feature loads of destructible elements, with objects fracturing in real-time, adding to the mayhem.

Awesome soundtrack

A lengthy electro/jazz/ambient/prog rock soundtrack by amazing artists like IO//IO, Neon Ghost, Kuicka, Sirius Error! and others.

Asymmetrical gameplay

The two main characters have unique weapon systems and unlockable special features that keep the gameplay interesting and constantly evolving.

DYNASTY WARRIORS 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition

DYNASTY WARRIORS 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition

Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition Review

Nostalgia Goggles Factor: Very Low.

Bug Factor: Very Low.

Crash Factor: Very Low.

Replay Factor: Intrinsic.

A crowd-control, hack’n slash game based on a Chinese novel, set in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. DW8XL contains an enormous amount of content and repetitive gameplay.

As I have played and reviewed DW3 recently, I will be doing some comparisons between these two games. Like many other reviewers have pointed out, “Complete Edition” is a lie, as is evident from glancing at the DLC section and you should not be playing this game with a keyboard.

-sigh- Where do I begin?

Well, I gotta start by saying, if you’re looking to get into the Warriors/Musou games, this would be the ideal title to start with. Easily the best title in the series (at least since DW5).

For those new to the series, Dynasty Warriors (a.k.a. Shin Sangoku Musō) is, basically, a hack-n'-slash based on era of the Three Kingdoms of China, and the romanticized novel of the same name. In its stages, there are thousands of enemies of various calibers to mow down. You got your peons that go down in a few hits, your commanders that are a little tougher, your generic named officers that are a threat, and other playable characters that have the same abilities you do. You have a more-or-less equal amount of allies on your side, and how they fight is determined by your side’s overall morale, which itself is determined by your performace. Each character has their own string of combinations, but I’ll get into that in the next paragraph.
