Transistor

Transistor

Transistor is a sci-fi themed RPG action game, developed and published by SuperGiant games (the same guys who brought us Bastion), releasing on PC in mid 2014, and then later in that year on PS4, and then got a further port to IOS in June of 2015.

Game play in Transistor takes a lot of elements from Bastion. The camera angle is in an isometric point of view as you control the main character, Red. You traverse a series of locations fighting enemies, known as the “Process”. A nice feature which has been added which is where Transistor differs from Bastion, is that you can either fight in real time, or in a planning phase. The real time plays very similar to how any isometric action game would play out, however the planning phase really adds an element of strategy to this title; you have a limited number of commands you can carry out before needing to recharge, these commands include moving around the scene and casting your various spells and abilities.

Transistor is a pretty interesting game, though definitely confusing. You begin the game “in media res,” with things falling apart and jumping into some uncertain combat with some creatures known as The Process. Your character, Red, seems to have lost her voice, which is odd, and I will get to that later as a criticism related to Supergiant Games. The only thing that speaks to you (as the character and player) for most of the game is actually your weapon, the Transistor itself.

The story is not all given to you. In fact, you must piece a lot of it together - what the world is, where the people in it are, who the people you meet along your journey are, and what you are actually doing in the first place, among many other questions. Supergiant was very lightweight on what they give you, as you only learn small pieces here and there, with a few side details as you explore and find items such as terminals, which have news posts or recorded audio.

4 hr kinetic novel with full Chinese VA (none on 3rd story, “1/30000 Days to Love” though). There are 3 stories, but the first 2 just make one story together. Good writing/narrative, characters, and art. Great soundtrack. Philosophical.

Find Your Own Meaning of Life

A Noble Sacrifice

Beautiful, nothing tops this game, absolutely nothing tops this game. There is something I must do, and will do for someone out there—a total stranger—searching for meaning in a meaningless existence, fighting for a future he/she wants. But before that, I still have a duty to finish—to write and utter words of esteem and love towards this marvel of a game. However, I must, without a doubt, do it.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

Shantae: Half Genie Hero is the latest installment of the Shantae series, after being successfully Kickstarted back in 2013 and easily surpassing its $400,000 goal. I believe they used this money well to improve the game both visually and audibly. I have not ever played Pirates Curse, and so this will not be a comparison between the two.

Positives:

Fantastic Visuals

Half Genie Hero got a serious visual update compared to other Shantae games, and it really pays off. With smooth 60 FPS animation, the game is stunning to behold and has detailed backgrounds often with many things going on in them as well (If you wait long enough in Mermaid Falls Factory, Bolo passes by on a hook with a fish attached to his head). This visual improvement ensures that people who are deterred from older pixelated graphics won’t miss out on the classic Shantae character and platforming appeal.

A great addition to the Shantae line of games that have become big favorites of mine. To start off, 2D animation amongst 3D shaded backgrounds looks sharp! I was a little surprised at first, because I had played Shantae so much in it’s pixel art form, but this new style WayForward has adopted for the series is fantastic and I got used to it fairly quickly. That also including the control scheme which is very snappy and responsive! Shantae has become a living realtime cartoon and it is a major factor that I’m so glad the series now has.

Gravity Ghost

Gravity Ghost

Gravity ghosts is a 2D long hair terraforming ghost girl star collector simulator! The game can be completed under an hour in a speedrun however a normal run will probably take around 2-4 hours depending on how slow you go through all the content.

Story

+Saving pets bring out memories

The story follows a ghost girl collecting stars in the sky looking for not only her memories but how to help those in her past. Along her adventures she will meet many guardians who will challenge her for the planet cores. Upon returning the cores to the black hole thats formed in the middle of the galaxy, the planets will be return suspended in cryostasis state until terraformed by her powers.

In each of the far corners of this dreamlike galaxy are the spirits of guardian animals, whimsical creatures that seem close and sentimental to a wandering soul of a young girl who explores ceaselessly through the cosmos. Floating between planets with the most graceful elegance and encountering this realm’s many colorful entities, each with their own history and past of mysteries for the playful space girl to discover.

Each node on our galactic map presents the player with a single stage of different planetary arrangements, some solid, some bouncy, some composed of water for you to splash through to the other side. Each maze of differently sized planet obstacles hides one shining yellow star to obtain and bring to the exit through skillful navigation and manipulation of gravity. Different plots on the sprawling and sparkling map hold the key to important elemental powers allowing you to become light as a feather and floating at a consistent level or heavy as a rock and plummeting towards the surface of a nearby planet. Successfully harnessing the power of these natural elements guides you easily through the galaxy.

Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition

Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition

Personal rating: 9/10

What to expect from Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition

From the same people who brought Shantae and DuckTales Remastered among other great platforming titles we have Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition. If you are familiar with any of previous titles that should tell that you are in for a good platforming experience.

Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition is a puzzle platformer with some action elements. While killing enemies is a big part on the game, it focuses a lot more on finding the five Hooligan Sisters on each level and to do that you’ll need to smart up and use a combination of thinking and reflexes to finish most levels, which are called Incidents here.

MIGHTY SWITCH FORCE! umm… ah, yes, HYPER DRIVE EDITION!

I originally found out about this game because of listening to its soundtrack. Somewhere in the world, on 21st of November 2018, I bought this game and started my adventure. After getting all of the achievements and a good amount of playtime, I decided to write a review on this game. So, let’s actually start then!

I’ll write some pros/cons first, while the more detailed explanations will be put below that.

Cons

~Uneven difficulty balance

Freedom Planet came about as the result of a Sonic the Hedgehog fan game coming to the realisation that it could probably be sold for actual money if it dropped references to Sega’s intellectual property and threw in some “original” characters instead.

And by “original,” I mean original in the Sonic the Hedgehog original character sense.

With the release of Sonic Mania, i feel that it is time to talk about this wonderful game.

“What is Freedom Planet?” you may be asking. Freedom Planet was a game that originally was a Sonic The Hedgehog ROM Hack, but after the creators deciding that they could make a unique game out of it, they built a new engine from scratch, removing all the likenesses of sonic, and after they did that, they went to kickstarter to fund the game. After some overwhelming success, they went on to produce and publish the game today, known as Freedom Planet.

BLUE REFLECTION / BLUE REFLECTION 幻に舞う少女の剣

BLUE REFLECTION / BLUE REFLECTION 幻に舞う少女の剣

I’ve stopped writing reviews since the last one which was long time ago. Simply because most of games don’t worth my time to review it, instead, by doing so, it is completely wasting of time since write a review doesn’t earn me anything or any money, sounds like Ako I know. But my case is: I rarely write a review unless it moves the bottom of my heart and soul making me feel guilty if not doing so. Blue Reflection is happened to be a rare case.

First thing I want to say: This review will heavily focus on my own feelings towards the game and the logical motion I had with it rather than talks about general things regarding the gameplay or any regular stuff. It may end up not very helpful for you. If so, I would like to state my apologies here first.

I’ve played many, many games and this one certainly deserves a review for all it has - the good, the bad, the ugly.

Visually Appealing, Sometimes Appalling

The thing that drew my attention from the very start was the art style - from its simplistic menus and icons, to the beautifully designed characters and worlds, I found myself attracted to it immediately. It’s perfect and refreshing. Then we have the ‘worlds’, called The Common, which is equally as fascinating at first glance. I really appreciate the little details like water reflection and cape transparency as these, albeit small details, are good details.

Child of Light

Child of Light

Funshine Bear was hurtling towards my screen with sniper precision. My 7-year old daughter is a stuffed toy-throwing expert. She really fell in love with the lead heroine, Aurora, and each dramatic encounter would leave her aghast as the story unfolded. In this case a plushie bear attack was warranted as Child of Light got real right there. Funshine Bear might have lost a bit of stuffing too. The game was my choice for our daddy-daughter gaming nights and we enjoyed it so much, it warranted two playthroughs.

Real player with 40.1 hrs in game

My review for Child of Light:

First of all, I’m going to address 2 concerns that I found in Steam community hub:

1. Uplay

Those who’re going to buy this game should know that this game is going to use Uplay, Ubisoft own game client. I noticed that many people dislike Uplay for certain reason so gonna respect that. I have my own issue with Uplay as well. So if you want to buy this game, make sure you know what you’re getting into.

2. Day 1 DLC

When the game is released, the dev put several DLCs immediately, including Golem DLC and Dark Aurora DLC which is the Special Edition bonus DLCs, Light Aurora DLC which is the preorder bonus and several “cheat” DLC which you can buy extra oculis for your game. Golem DLC gives you a new party member and a small quest to get him, while Light Aurora and Dark Aurora DLC give you skins for Aurora and extra oculis and bonus stats. The “cheat” DLC is actually consists of oculis, which means you can buy the oculis using real money once. Among these DLCs, only Golem DLC adds a bit of content while the skins just for eye candy. As much as I hate day 1 DLC, if you want to support the dev, buy the Golem and the skins DLC only. Of course you can ignore the DLCs if you don’t want to support day 1 DLCs. I myself didn’t bought any of the DLCs except Light Aurora since I preorder it.

Disney Princess: Enchanted Journey

My daughter loves this game more than most of the other Disney ones she has played on Steam. The controls are very simple yet teach her some basic keyboard and mouse skills. The puzzles start out very simple and progress in a way that even a four year old can pick up without too much help, but I love how it challenges her mind. She also enjoys that she can go to the mirror and change up her hair, dresses, etc. She’s already put 15 hours into this game in just a couple of weeks and seems to always want to play it. It’s one that I also don’t mind helping her with because there are some actually fun minigames to be had.
