Persona® 5 Strikers

Persona® 5 Strikers

Anyone familiar with the Warriors games will have a rough understanding of what to expect. But this time around the Persona mechanics are integrated quite well, making it a very different experience than any Warriors game before it - if anything, the much larger number of enemies than normal for a Persona game necessitates a stronger focus on the weakness system in order to maintain an advantage. And yes, Persona collection and fusion are still core mechanics as well. Overall, it lends itself to using very different tactics than a normal Persona game, and combinations I wouldn’t have really bothered with outside of this game. The story and cutscenes are completely faithful to what one would expect of Persona, and I felt were very fulfilling.

This was a fantastic game. The turn based game play was translated beautifully into this action adventure style. The stories and characters where as fun as ever and it feels like they never left. Picks up right where the last game left off. Highly recommend.

True Lover’s Knot

True Lover’s Knot

I actually like to play VN’s from time to time, but wow this is one of the worst I have encountered in a long while. You play as Emma, a female Mac Gyver who can and needs to fix up every damn thing with her IT skills, namingly server, mobile phones, tablets, doors, or even ship engines. Because all of this tech.stuff is interchangable and breaks every five minutes, obviously.

Which brings me to the absolute stupid and infuriating match 3 mini-game. It isn’t hard at all, but so very overused that you find yourself on this mini-game screen every few minutes and you quickly feel as if the starting melody of it is mocking you. Seeing how the story is about Emma taking a cruise trip with her best friend, I didn’t expect much plot, yet even the little there is, is drab and expository. Less telling and more showing would have done wonders here.

This game has a lot of selling points that would ordinarily be a massive hit with me - Romantic story, anime-inspired characters, photo-realism, exotic/luxurious setting, etc etc. That’s why I bought the game, after all. But while my personal check marks are all on deck, the execution has completely missed the boat. I get that it’s the job of the developers to try and sell the game, but reading the description here on the store page after having played the game will make the passengers of this voyage feel like they’ve been shanghaied. Let me break down the brochure for you:

BlazBlue Centralfiction

I was actually planning to do this after I complete arcade mode with all the characters but I probably won’t even be doing that anytime soon so I might as well review this game now. BlazBlue has done a lot for me throughout the 2 years that I have been playing the series and I hope others will be able to experience something similar to what I did.

I’ll point this out now so that it’s clear: BlazBlue isn’t for absolutely everyone. I’ll just lay out the points that I think define the game.

Thanks ASW/H2 for the great port.

Pros:

  • Latest BB available on consoles, now on PC. for cheap. (BBCF is still only on JPN arcades atm)

  • Online mode works. Yes, a working online mode. In 2016. Isn’t that amazing?

  • One of the best, if not the best, netcode.

  • DirectInput Support.

  • Single player content. TONS of them. (Arcade, Story mode, Challenge, Abyss, Score Attack, Unlimited Mars, Challenge, Training, an extra story mode, and a couple of stuff for newcomers)

  • Tutorial will show you the ropes and Challenge mode can make you master some complex combos.

Ever since the final game in the series CentralFiction pissed me off to a full degree, I’ve pretty much boycotted the franchise.

But I figured that’s not really fair on this game, considering how much of an advancement it is.

You can now temporarily power up your character in the midst of a fight by pressing all four attack buttons. Each character powers up differently. Ragna absorbs more health with his drive attacks, Makoto’s punches will constantly be at full power and Hazama conjures up that goddamn barrier that drove me insane in the previous game.

GUILTY GEAR Xrd -REVELATOR-

GUILTY GEAR Xrd -REVELATOR-

I played Sign for 6 months, and when I mean by play, I mean grind combos in the training room and doing nothing else as Millia. So, when revelator came out, I was super excited. Unlike Street fighter V’s launch (Sorry Capcom fans please don’t hate me) Revelator’s launch went exteremly smoothly for me.

So, let’s take a look at what the game does well:

+Netcode- HOLY MOTHER OF GOD THE NETCODE IS AMAZING. On average, I get 2-4 frames of delay and it feels like I’m playing on a console offline. Granted, this assuming you have anti-aliasing and post-effects off, but even with everything on, you’ll get 5 frames at the max. The only netcode that can top Guilty Gear’s is Killer Instinct.

This piece of sh*t of a game actually made me go out and buy a fight stick just so I could get better with it lol. I have tried out a bunch of fighting games before, but nothing came close to this. GUILTY GEAR Xrd -REVELATOR- is the best fighting game I’ve played so far, and possibly one of the best game I’ve played in general, and that’s saying a lot, because I’ve never been into fighting games that much in the past.

The Positives:

  • Complex but satisfying fighting system: The game is indeed hard to learn at first, as there are lots of mechanics to understand, but even at the beginner level, you can still pull off some cool stuff and look awesome while doing it. Once you start getting better, things like Romance Cancels and Burst will be easier to get into and you will be able to use them correctly at no time. And although combos are pretty tough to perform, I think one of the way to learn them is to watch videos and tutorial on the internet and try to copy the combo in practice mode, then slowly apply them in real matches, and sooner or later you will be able to do it. To me, that feeling of learning new moves and combos, then successfully doing them against real opponents is what makes this game so great and memorable.

After a Dozen Years comes now the next new Installment of Guilty Gear.

Developed with the Unreal Engine 3, the Game features now real 3D Chars (No HD Sprites) alongside some few Cinematics during Play which gives the Feel of Immersive 3D. The Game itself is still played in 2D (Arenas are tough 3D Maps with Impression giving 2D).

You can choose over 16 Characters (some New alongside some Old Ones) each with his own Challenge Course for learning BnB Combos. The Story Mode is now a Movie (estimated 4 hours) without some Interaction, so you can sit back and press only the Text Screens away during Talking between Characters.

+Fantastic art direction/art style

+Rockin OST

+There is an English dub for those who want it. Overall quality is hit or miss; there are issues with delivery, voice clip editing, audio balancing, etc. I find it worthy enough to be a positive

+Very solid gameplay

~The input buffer is slightly finicky; this is my opinion, and it’s listed here as an observation, and not a review point

-This game was played entirely on a keyboard, and using the button configuration menu was a hassle

-The menus use their own fixed button configuration for navigation, and you can’t change it

Persona 4 Golden

Persona 4 Golden

Definately the Definitive version of this game. Don’t expect it to be as grand as Persona 5 or as slick. BUT. The story is a classic and all the elements are there. It looks great and runs well. There are few games that were as loved as this one and it’s not aged too badly. If you don’t mind graphics that are a little old and you like social sims or dungeon crawling or RPGs in general, it’s honestly worth trying. If you want to experience all of the game to its fullest then try out all aspects of the game and hang out with classmates and do the other activities. The game rewards you greatly!

The truth of this story…

Persona 4 is one of those games that will stay forever in your hears, not because of the mechanics, since this is applied a very old implementation of the Turn-Based RPG, but because of its story and characters.

The Story of persona 4 is amazing, a very cool mystery game with a mystic aura around the concept of the Truth Self and the TV World, the first 4 episodes were made to introduce the characters and mechanics in different ways, giving all the dungeons an special feeling, meanwhile around the end of

! Naoto’s dungeon the story spikes and a lot of plot twists happen around the mystery.

The Caligula Effect: Overdose

The Caligula Effect: Overdose

Niche game can be very fascinating and charming despite some major flaws. The Caligula Effect: Overdose (TCE:O) is one title that piqued my interest and something more than a lite version of Persona. TCE:O (2018) is remake of PS VITA version (2016); features improved visual / gameplay and extended campaign.

The Painless Musical World

The story sets in virtual reality world called Mobius where people can escape pain, but somehow stuck into high-school life. Some lost their control and turn into Digiheads. You play as nameless protagonist that break free from ideal thought of AI creator named “μ”. With help of another AI “Aria”, you form Go-Home Club to ultimately escape from Mobius while facing Ostinato Musicians as μ supporters.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with this game, though I think you can clearly see points where it fails in certain areas. My first run (I may return to 100% the game later) ended with around 33 Hours, the final boss is level 55, so you won’t be getting a full JRPG experience out of it, but you won’t be getting anything like the multi-game Trails series either.

First of all, gameplay. This is fairly good in my opinion. I recommend playing the game on hard, if you’re looking for a decent challenge, as I tried normal and found it incredibly easy to just mash A and get through 90% of all the battles, and going any higher difficulty makes a lot of fights out of your control, forced to rely on the hit rate. Combat is akin to a strategic ARPG - you can pick and choose your moves (in sets of 3 actions per character, with 4 potential characters in a party at once, meaning you can plan up to 12 moves ahead and be able to react to the enemy preemptively. It is important to note however, that there is no option to ‘skip’ performing one of your actions, or at least I didn’t find any, which means you’re forced to choose 3 actions per turn and potentially forced to go through 3 cooldown timers for actions you might not have even wanted to do.) You also have dungeons you move around as well as a ‘deepen friendships’ mode with your fellow members of the Go-Home-Club (Or Ostinato Musicians should you seize the opportunity) - If you’ve played the Persona series, you’ll be used to this mode. The dungeons are large, although there is not much to do in them but find chests for equipment or fight enemies most of the time. I do believe that they could have been shortened a bit and the experience would not suffer.

Umineko When They Cry - Question Arcs

Umineko When They Cry - Question Arcs

Ryukishi07, you sadistic bastard, I love you.

Before getting this one, I would recommend you to at least try to read the Higurashi When They Cry series. They’re amazing visual novels that have some connection to Umineko’s plot. Don’t worry, they’re not required, but they’re also great stories that, if you finish them, you’ll have a whole different view on some of Umineko’s important characters.

Umineko is a story about sin, punishment, guilt, trauma and especially love. Written by Ryukishi07, who had experience as a social worker, it’s a mystery in it’s core, but not entirely. The content ranges from bittersweet love stories to chuuni fantastic logic and reasoning battles, where arguments take form as weapons. How can you have so many different kinds of dilemmas in one story? Well, just look at the hour counts which people who read this series have on Steam. It’s easily an 100+ experience.

Real player with 112.4 hrs in game

This is a review of the whole of Umineko, not just the Question Arcs. Just so you know.

Mystery stories are, at their core, just one big puzzle. An author writes a story, gives you hints, and typically tells you all you need to know before the story’s conclusion so that you have a fair chance at figuring it out if you’re perceptive enough. Good mystery authors make it possible to figure out the killer long before they are revealed in the story. But it has gotten to the point that many people either don’t try and figure it out, or if they do, their guesses are far more lukewarm, because they know the story will succinctly reveal everything at the end of the story and wrap everything up in a nice little bow. Umineko, on the other hand, does not do this. Umineko lays out clues for you and tells you to figure it out yourself, not directly revealing the answer to a majority of its individual mysteries, and, while giving you more hints to its biggest mysteries, never outright stating the answer. What makes the story even more difficult to solve is the constant questioning of whether what you’re seeing is true or false, and whether or not the murders are truly being done by magic, not helped by the constant seemingly impossible closed room murders. Can you figure out the truth? That’s up to your observational skills.
