Empires in Ruins

Empires in Ruins

Edit: The developer is super chill, and is looking to patch out the bugs soon. This is still a hard game with hit-or-miss writing and an imperfect UI, but serious props to anyone who can indie dev something this complex. Check it out if there isn’t something in the review that’s a dealbreaker for you.

This is a very “yes, but…” recommendation.

Empires In Ruins is a thing I should like. It’s a tower defense with a 4x strategy layer, and where you can econ yourself into an easier TD situation, or TD yourself out of a bad economy.

Empires in Ruins Review – Conclusion and opinion**

For an indie game of a small team just entering early access, the game is already surprisingly polished. The campaign includes a very entertaining story and for strategy fans an appealing game depth.

When I first saw this game, I had high expectations, mainly because of its resemblance of the hidden gem New EPIC SCUFFED BHOP SIMULATOR 2023 (POGCHAMP). After playing it, I can gladly say, my already high expectations were blown out of the water by this modern masterpiece. Most triple A games cannot even compare to the work of art that is this game. From the aesthetic design, to the gameplay, everything about this game is the definition of groundbreaking.

When it comes to aesthetic design, this game is perfect. Menus are simple, yet effective. The background of the main menu in specific shows gameplay that makes you pumped to play. The sound design has real bangars that always get you hyped for the next wave. The enemy design is minimalistic, but charming. The levels in the game all have a charm to them in a different way. From the dark lighting of the asteroid, to the minimalistic style of the fall, every level feels different from the last. The voice acting has tons of personality and sets a tone for the rest of the game. Even the towers all shoot bright bullets that feel really satisfying to watch tear down the enemies. Also the doggo is really cute I wish I could pet him.

Unfortunately even for the price of £2 its still pretty terrible, i went into the game thinking wish it had more than 5 missions, was quickly replaced by not been able to wait til i finished it, literally, left during the 4th mission, i could be so much better but was blatantly abandonded early on during alpha

It’s a simple tower defense game, but a good looking one.

Would rate neutral if Steam allowed that, but they are still in computing middle-age so it’s either yay or nay… let’s call it a yay for a rather casual, cute game.

I’ll agree with Masamune27858 that this isn’t a “good” TD game. The core gameplay is just too simple. However, I don’t think it’s a bad game, it’s just not what someone who is experienced in TD games would be looking for. I do think this game would be nice for someone new to Tower Defense games.

It’s a very beautiful game. In fact, it it’s probably the best looking TD game in VR. The art-style looks really good and they would be pleasant just as VR dioramas to enjoy. The gameplay is basically just playing down one of three towers, plus upgrading or selling them. You also have a hero that you can place to help put down the enemy siege.

Toewr le Fence

Fun little game considering the price. There’s no real objective, and I didn’t find it very challenging after the first 10 minutes, but I ended up spending about an hour on it and passing level 100. There are a few bugs (e.g. clicking on a tower often selects a nearby tower instead, upgrades sometimes spend all the money you have for multiple levels and other times require an individual click per upgrade) and it’s rather memey (but that’s no secret), but I really enjoyed my time with it.

Not really a positive or negative review at this stage, but the game was cheap and with the right development, there could be something interesting.

At this time after an initial (interrupted by me) playthrough, I would worry that the game might go on too long without any scores/leaderboard being kept to maintain some sort of continuing interest.

Heroes Must Diee

Heroes Must Diee

You have been living a peaceful life in a small village but once every fortnight these so called “Heroes” come into the village and un-apologetically break in houses and take what does not belong to them. Tired of this rampant menace you have decided to stop it and regain the peaceful life you so yearn. Build traps in and around your house or maybe buy some land on the outskirts of town to keep bloodshed away. Craft weapons, potions, bombs to be launched at the enemy. Resource manage whatever you have and help your fellow villagers buy buying resources from them from the gold of the fallen “Heroes”.

  • Turn your humble abode into a full-on Dungeon that make the Heroes suck their thumb and wet their pants.

  • Craft an elaborate Dungeon, place traps and ruses for Heroes will different skill set and attributes. Some maybe be heavy and strong, some may be intelligent and fast.

  • Fight off bigger and smarter waves of Hero bands that come to take your loot.

  • Learn about the incoming Hero’s weaknesses as they are strong and may not be killed easily. Lure them into traps, some are claustrophobic, some are greedy, some have weak ankles.

  • Hire minions, monsters, and dragons as they have been tortured far too long and seek revenge.

  • Craft items, weapons, ammunitions, bombs to reload your traps and slay the Heroes.

  • Improve and upgrade traps, learn new technology because the enemy is learning too.

  • Heightened heroes will come, who have learnt from their previous experiences and may know how to fight off your traps, so beware.

  • Explore a vast map, filled with people who live their lives and talk. Two different villages and numerous traders coming in from different kingdoms.

  • Improve your skills over time. Melee, Archery, Magic, Dark Magic are few skills to use directly against the enemy but also learn to Mine, Chop wood, Fish and Forage.

  • Find a mount for yourself, with multiple mount options pick one. Take care of it and it grows and levels as you do.

  • Loot from the slain Heroes, Gold, Epic and Rare weapons and armour. Use it against them or give it to your minions or sell off for more Gold.

Tried and it’s not bad. Though there is no guidance, you could figure out the way to play this game quite soon. But I do recommend the developer to add tower, skill and user interface introductions into this game, maybe a manual button in the setting menu.

Cannot sell or fix buff tower is kinda annoying and the money quickly becomes useless during the late game play even in second stage. Finding and clicking each resource tower to collect coins periodically does not give player a comfort experience, especially when you cannot move these separated towers. A collect-all button may be a good approach.

Creeper World 4

Creeper World 4

For anyone who knows what Creeper World is, you’ll probably know what to expect and what you’re going to get. This review is for those who don’t know what Creeper World is, and are looking to break into the series starting here.

Real player with 538.4 hrs in game

This game is a small evolution over Creeper World 3. Around 45 missions total plus random and user-made maps. If you enjoyed the previous games in the series you will enjoy this one.

The graphics are now 3D but that doesn’t affect the gameplay that much. The only exception is the connection between buildings, which now also takes height into account. You can no longer link from height 1 to height 20 with a simple tower.

An annoying change is that nullification is no longer permanent. You have to keep the nullifier intact and supplied, otherwise the nullfied structure will come back into operation. This is like CW1 where you had no nullifier and instead you had to park a few cannons near each emitter to kill off the creeper before it can spread. CW4’s system is the worst of all the games. Maybe this change was brought about because the circle of power mechanic from CW3 was so OP. But there is a simple solution to that - simply make the nullified structure disappear and leave nothing behind. The ERN system is a good compromise as it retains some of the benefits of the circles of power without becoming OP.
