Europa Universalis IV
I’m a divorced woman of color. Recently, my ex got our son Larry a video game called Europa Universalis for his 14th birthday. It seemed good for him, because it takes place in the distant past and he’s always been interested in history, so it seemed like a nice enough game, no graphic violence or anything, at least until I sat down and watched him play at it. I don’t know what sorts of racists made this game, but it’s basically a colonialism and genocide justification simulator. If you want to survive, you need to have access to money and soldiers, and the most (only) reliable way to ensure you have enough is to attack and conquer your weaker neighbors. If you don’t, you can be sure someone else will eventually come attack and conquer you.

So EU4 was a good game. Then they released the 450+ ‘bug fixes’. The entire game outside Europe has now been put back behind a new paywall unless you have the paradise DLC as it is now impossible to develop your provinces to spawn institutions as army tradition gives you impossibly high dev costs. I played one game and when I needed to dev an institution from a 1/1/1 grasslands province and starting cost is 120. That is only with 33 army tradition giving a 150% penalty. This was a custom nation and I had -20% dev cost. Good job paradox forcing everyone to buy your shittiest dlc in order to use any of the other DLC’s you have paid for. The game is now broken outside of Europe without the paradise dlc. You make me sick Paradox!

Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun
Sengoku jidai is a turn based 4x4 grid style strategy game based in eastern asia and asias historical battles. Covering Japan to Korea, China and Mongolia its a true gem of a game that, get this, the developers still work on.
Lets talk about the game play:
Im going to be straight up honest, It’s not for everyone. Its like chess, with rng. Your units battle each other, based on their attack stats, armour stats, terrain and morale the computer calculates how much damage is done to the unit and if damage is done to their morale. You can also affect this based on your position which is where the game really shines.

This game is simply incredible. I had been looking for a tabletop wargaming experience in digital format for a very long time. The direct predecessor to this game, Pike and Shot, looked very viable, but I was not interested enough in the time period and aesthetic of it to gamble $40. Something about landschneckts in frilly blouses and giant feather caps wielding impossibly long pikes just doesn’t do it for me (purely a personal preference).
But being a lifelong fan of Japanese history, and in particular the Sengoku Jidai, when this game came out I knew I had to get it. I have no regrets. It is a near-perfect digital adaptation of tabletop wargaming.

Total War: EMPIRE – Definitive Edition
I’ve had this game for awhile so i guess this was a review long coming. what did i like? everything essentially. the time the game was sent in, the ships, the muskets. all down to the game’s controls. even watching the battle go on, if you have the time is like watching a movie. if there was anything i could say this game truly missed, it would be these few cons:
- There’s no way to play with a friend in the campaign. as detailed as it was it missed this feature. maybe if
this ever gets a reboot it could include a campaign like shogun total war 2 has (you can play with a friend). And include a full on multiplayer campaign so players would fight for territory instead of just the AI

Basically, I’m addicted to this game. When I feel like some quick entertainment a little Road to Independence is in order. This is especially fun when you put it on the hardest setting and promptly cream the red coats at Bunker Hill. Watching them run away is completely gratifying.
Once in awhile it is enjoyable to sink a Spanish Galleon with an 18 gun sloop. It’s nice to have guns that shoot farther than the big boy’s guns. Layoff in the distance, knock out the masts with chain, and then have at the immobile hulk.

Hearts of Iron III
This game lets you play as any country during World War 2. I played the base game plus all expansions (SF, FtM, TFH).
You can manage every aspect of the war, from diplomacy to espionage to research to actual combat. You can even try to stay neutral and sit out the fighting if you want, but what fun would that be?
There is an enormous amount of complexity - casual gamers beware! If one part of the war is too tedious for you, it can be set to be automated. For example, rather than personally overseeing every trade deal you can check a box and let the computer handle all of your trades. The computer is not as smart as a person and it can’t metagame but in most tasks it does an adequate job.

The King of Grand Strategy
Most of you who visit the shop-page for Hearts of Iron III probably already know what this game is all about. It’s a hardcore (as hardcore as it can get, actually!) Grand Strategy Game by Paradox Interactive. That one sentence really says it all.
This review is intended for those who don’t yet know what Grand Strategy (the capitals are there with a purpose!) is all about. Simply put: Grand Strategy games are the best, but also the most complex, pc gaming has to offer. They are immersive, complex, and very addictive. They are not for everyone, that’s for sure. You don’t play them for the graphics, nor for the sounds or some great level-design, but only for the gameplay, which can also be very, very difficult to master. There are tons of stats, of units and/or provinces to be controlled and only one person who has the power to control them: you.

Hearts of Iron IV

Maybe you’re someone like me. I’m always the good guy, the Jedi, the Paragon, the lawful good.
Then when playing Hearts of Iron IV something in me snapped, I came to see that in these strategy games you are the villain, you are evil.
Embrace it, let the hate strengthen you, harden your heart to the lamentations of your foes, sit atop a throne of skulls steeped in blood and command all you survey.
If I’ve learned anything by talking to other gamers, it’s that if someone makes a game where you can kill people, some gamer is going to kill everything that can be killed in that game. Be that gamer, and enjoy this gem of a game. 10/10

after 1500 hours i can tell you the developers dont care about this game, mod creators make better and more enspired content as 1 or 2 people they charge 20 dollars for them to break your game and kill the community with there unenspired lazy dlc filled with expliots and bugs tank designer is so broken and transport planes are actually supply a whole army with 200 planes and its taken them more them weeks and they still havnt fixed it it is just a value they have to change in the game code modders have already fixed it in days sad to see that this company is all about the money so sad man i just want to play a game that is made by people that care

The Great Fantasy Struggle
I wouldn’t neither recommend or not recommend this game. The game is very specific. You can see game trailer and everything is in the trailer. You need to add your missioners or warriors to take over other provinces. They fight by them selves. All you need is just to add them in the right time. Sometimes you can build structures in your home city. It provides you with global bonus. Statistic window helps you to see global data but it takes time to understand how to use it.
Use space bar for pause. Actually don’t even think to play it before you read manual. Read it first, play the game and read manual again. The game is not intuitive. You need to struggle to understand how to play the game but once you get it you are good ( as you learn how to play the classic chess ).

The description of this game is misguiding, but this does not necessarily mean that the game is bad. It is not a deep or complex strategy, it requires only high attention to thoroughly and constantly check the state of provinces. The main problem is time restriction. I think, it requires a little bit of thought how to distribute the funds to achieve goal of the campaign. It may be interesting to people who like to find approaches to achieve a certain goal, but if you look for a turn-based game, operations on strategic level or micromanagement, this may not be the right choice.

Darkest Hour: A Hearts of Iron Game
Darkest Hour would merit an award not only for its terrific value but also for the care put into its playability and historical accuracy. Historical events will generally always occur but sometimes at a different moment than anticipated depending on a number of factors. It is generally impossible to avoid having Stalin’s purges as the Soviet player, or election results in France for instance. But in spite of this, outcomes may be very different from game to game because of all other factors that may come into play. It is a complex game that requires a lot of attention, but that is also very rewarding to play.

I have 250-something hours in this game, and it is truly worth every cent i payed for it, i think it was like 2$ CAN. As Hoi4 can never hope to run on my system so this was my first hearts of iron game and i think its a good introduction for the series. It does have a steep learning curve and requires some mental capacity, but it is sorta simple when you look at it and its parts.
Some reviews say that the game is rather linear, that is sorta true at a glance depending on how you play. You can choose to play any nation at a variety of start dates and choose multiple paths to go down for your nation, (though not nearly as extensive as hoi4s foucus trees). there are options to go down alt-history in the base game, through the great number of events and decisions. they are limited though, it is impossible to have a communist USA for example, without the use of a little thing called console commands, which opens up alot of opportunities. make canada a fascist industrial powerhouse rivaling germany in might? you can do it, you can cheat your way through alot, but my advice is to use it only for developing minor nations or capitulating a already defeated enemy, or bypassing the script and creating your own scenarios.
