Napoleon Maiden

Napoleon Maiden

**Change your destiny. Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools.

Shoichi Sakikawa was a normal, second-year high school student.

Or, he was, until he woke up from a car accident only to find

himself trapped in mid-revolution 19th century France.

What saved him from an onslaught of bullets was a girl armed with a sword.

“I am Napoleon Bonaparte. And one day I shall be ruler of all France.”

Having been saved by this “Napoleon” in the form of a girl,

Shoichi ends up accompanying her on her quest.

But in this world, not only is the past distorted,

but the gods grant chosen girls the gift of greatness,

who in turn fight one another using superhuman abilities known as “Tenkei.”

Will Shoichi be able to return to his own world?

And what will become of his growing bond with Napoleon?**

Very promising game!

The game is beautiful, really good gameplay mechanics, nice rythm, interesting characters, this is a lot of fun no matter if you want to play it casually or if you want competitivity, both works really good!

Almost single developer so it’ll take a bit of time to reach its full potential but nothing can go wrong with so much passion! Dev is actually really active to take all the feedback from players (i’d say everyday) and really efficient so this is really reassuring to see that :).

I am not one to leave reviews, but this indie game really struck me.

I currently have a little over 5 hours in this game and I simply can not get enough and am pleasantly shocked by how much this game has to offer from replayability and skill cap ceilings. Talk about being competitive and enriching, every character has their own unique playstyle and combos that allow you to try to perform and perfect yet such a simple idea that I was able to pick up on the concepts immediately and over time have found out more and more things as I played, making me feel like I am growing with the game which is always incredibly fun.

A fairly good game.

Puzzles were generally easy, although a walk-through was required in one instance.

Game-play was unnecessarily let down by having to repeatedly adjust the screen contrast/brightness levels.

Game ending was poor - Too sudden.

Worthy addition to the ‘Escape the House’ genre. Game is lovingly crafted by a small development team with pleasing art and sound effects. Environments focus on a Victorian style house, with a past. The game is divided into separate rooms, each with stand alone puzzles to solve in order to exit to the next. There is no backtracking.

There is a high level back-story that is told through notes found throughout the house. You stumble upon several corpses but, for the most part, there are few horror elements.

A House of Many Doors

A House of Many Doors

This has quickly shot to the top of my favorite games of all time list, and about 6 months after release it’s still there. That said, gonna do my best to be relatively objective about its good and bad points:

aHoMD has an amazing setting and top-notch worldbuilding, and digging through the narrative and trying to understand what has happened and will happen is as big a part of the exploration in this game as the physical exploration aspect itself. The House is a bizarre, fascinating place, so if you’re a fan of surreal fantasy, magical realism, and slipstream works that toss you a totally alien place and tell you to infer everything from scratch, you’ll absolutely love this. Additionally, the game tweaks quite a lot of itself based on your actions and choices, and much of what you do has consequences, from the innocuous to the absolutely devastating. I feel like each one of the characters I play is really a different character because of that.

HOMD is somewhere in my top ten best games of all time.

It is an unspeakably rich, vast and beautiful universe and I’m on my second playthrough. Having taken a couple of years since the previous run, I found it haunting my dreams constantly, occasionally I’d lie awake in bed missing it like a former lover, and I had to come crawling back.

But let’s start at the beginning.

HOMD is set in The House, a bizarre dimension that sucks in people from all kinds of universes, and dumps them into a world divided into vast Rooms many miles across, where people don’t need to eat, but prolonged exposure to the ever present darkness is lethal. Light is life, and the population (numbering in billions) have gathered in quite a few vast cities spread all throughout the House, while intercellular explorers, like yourself, move between Rooms in crawling vehicles.

The Hunter’s Journals - Tattered Sails

The Hunter’s Journals - Tattered Sails

The interactive mechanics are not like other interactive fiction I’ve played. It is much more like a table top game. Combat is actually handled in rounds with randomly generated dice rolls. You can speed this up to just show the final result but it’s still a table top way of handling things and I didn’t like it.

In table top games you can build your character to weight the dice rolls through backgrounds, stats, gear, race, etc. This game’s character creation was so minimal that I felt that the outcome of combat was very random. This was a huge interruption to the story because poor results weren’t injuries or delays. Poor results (at least early on for me) meant death.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing

Review

Van Helsing is sold pretty cheap every now and then. Despite the huge success of the first game, the sequels and the final cut which bundles all the games in one huge playtrough got very bad reviews. I am not a huge fan of hack & slash rpg´s but i like them sometimes so i decided to give the trilogy a shot. I managed to finish the game in a long session after 2 days and had lots of fun with this game.

Gameplay

Van Helsing doesnt really do anything new that any other game in its genre didnt do already. But what they did was adding the best aspects on many games and combine them. That doesnt mean the game is perfect, its far away from that. The different aspects work good together and offer a solid foundation for a great game.

Stop what you’re doing, do yourself a favour, just go buy and play this game. Or wait for a discount, it’s your wallet after all. I mean who am I to tell you how to live your life. I heard that they give you discounts up to 70%, which is always great. But this game is worth to buy either way.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, to which I’ll be referring as “TIAoVH” from now on for convenience purposes, is a great game with it’s gothic/steampunk atmosphere and memorable characters. The game takes place in the 19th-century Eastern Europe where magic and weird technology is real. You play as the son of the famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing and take on various adventures in order to defeat the reign of the mad scientists Dr. Fulmigati. Of course you encounter a wide variety of enemies from robots to werewolfs, harpies to mutant abominations, bandits to creatures that’ll be the very seed of your nightmares on the way. I mean, come on, it wouldn’t be a Van Helsing game unless you get to kill tons of different mobs. Also, your lovely ghost companion Lady Katarina is there to help you out along your journey. The balance between the characteristics of charming and witty Katarina and more down to earth, serious Helsing makes the dialogue in game much more enjoyable.

After adding the first Van Helsing to one of the most favorite games I’ve ever played, VH2 only polished and added to the enjoyment where the first one left off. I was still playing the first one up to the release of this game and continued playing it during this one. But VH2 not only left off where the last story ended, but improved on tons of things to make this game even more enjoyable than the first. So with this in mind, I wrote a review for people new to the series as well as one for people who have played the first game and are considering getting this one.

Van Helsing has his work cut out for him. For all the monsters he’s slain, the looming spectres of Diablo, Torchlight, and Path of Exile cast an imposing shadow over the rugged hero. To set itself apart, this modern dungeon crawler has to find a way to truly sink its claws into the player beyond the usual loot’n’grind. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II, the second part of a planned trilogy by Neocore Games, succeeds remarkably in carving out its own identity, but at the potentially steep price of polish and balance.
