Legendary Tales

Legendary Tales

A+ Game!!! Legendary tales, as it stands right now 11/28/21, is a fantastic game that is among the best VR games ive played so far, and I consider myself a veteran. It is essentially Diablo, which seems intentional down to the music in the town. Devs nailed it. The combat is tight, and fair, where if you pay attention you can parry attacks consistently, but if you get sloppy you quickly get punished. The magic, which is apparently being radically improved in the near future, is already SUPER fun. My wife and I play this game together endlessly, where she if often damaging/stunning/freezing hordes of enemies as I plunge in to fight dual wielding swords. I am absolutely STOKED for the future of this game, as they have cleartly laid out a massive plan for additional monsters, magic spells, levels, bosses, synergy magic system, items, skill and stat systems, and so much more.

Too expensive for it’s current state. Essentially 20 levels of the same 3 enemies and on the exact same style of dungeon map that take too long to kill and cannot be engaged in an enjoyable manner. The physics and mechanics of combat are just bad for now, with developers dedicated to asian style MMORPG elements (The bad ones) - involving relentless grind-based progression, in VR where you physically will struggle to sustain the requirements.

The best point in the games history was at release when there were abilities and weapons that could be abused to shift the balance in the players favor - making progression enjoyable. Since then the devs have relentlessly worked towards making the game more difficult and removing any exploits while ignoring the community’s actual requests. They have only focused on redundant balance fixes and the broken magic system since release - barely managing to address some serious bugs.

Shadow Warrior

Shadow Warrior

Story of a demonic incestuous affair that is uncovered by her older brothers and you can kinda guess the rest.

🔸Shadow Warrior’s story is well-written for a AA game. You are in control of Lo Wang, an assassin who is hired by a powerful Japanese magnate to buy an ancient katana -Nobitsura Kage- from a collector for 2 million dollars. However as you may expect, things don’t go as planned and Wang tries to take the katana by force, then he finds out Mr. Mizayaki -The collector- is in contact with a demon named Hoji.

For some reason I decided to go for all achievements in this game, so I had to complete it both on insane and heroic difficulties. Was it worth it? No. Was it fun? No. Was it entertaining? Sort of. But let’s take one thing at a time.

Shadow Warrior 2013 is a remake of a semi-popular old school shooter of the same title. Though I cannot really call this game a remake, because remake usually means a piece that is largely refined to fit modern standards and audience but keeps its original nature. I cannot say that this game doesn’t have anything in common with the original but it also stepped quite far from it. First things first, the gameplay was changed to fit modern shooter standards: most of creative things like using enemy’s head as a major weapon, nuclear rockets, demon heart that creates a copy of you, etc were discarded. They were changed with mainstream pistol, uzi, shotgun, crossbow, and demon heart now just acts as instant-kill bomb, enemy head became an optional thing, which is mostly useless. The shooting itself is very odd: you do not really feel any impact, there is a regular lack of ammo and some weapons are too OP over the others. However, the developers tried to expand the gameplay by adding magic and sword fights. I cannot say that these are bad but they are also far from perfect. Sword acts more like a bat that you have to punch enemies with rather than a blade that slices through them, on earlier levels you tend to run out of ammo and have to poke foes for ages with it, sword techniques are interesting but there is too few of them for the whole game. As for the magic spells, it adds some variety to the gameplay but, just like with sword skills, there are too few of them. Only 2 combat spells, which basically do the same thing – stun enemies – healing, and protection, which you will unlikely use at all if you play casually. The game is also very overloaded with upgrades. Instead of a tree or gradually opening skills you are instantly given 9 different progression screens for the character + 1 for each acquired weapon. Should I say that nobody’s gonna spend 20 min of just reading each and every description? Because of this, I personally missed a useful skill of resurrection just because I skipped reading another bunch of text. If those screens were introduced in the first 3-4 levels instead of the very first one it wouldn’t hurt the gameplay at all but made the introduction to the upgrades much smoother.

120 hrs in, multiple wonderful updates, even a youtube video I made on it- I cannot recommend this game more. The modding scene can add pretty much anything you want- from dark souls weapons, to a m4 rifle you can build and customize by hand (well, depending on your game version due to modders needing time to update).

But even with that, I find myself removing my mods every now and then just to experience the base game again, it’s so good. I love what I saw one reviewer say, good for those in retail. Definitely a plus for me being in mostly customer service XD

This game needs some time to get used to. But once you are familiar with it’s mechanics it is great fun and allows a lot of experimentation. Also mods are supported and only get destroyed if cool new content is released. The new dungeon mode also offers a lot of new value.

Elium - Prison Escape

Elium - Prison Escape

I stumbled upon this game by chance and being a fan of the stealth action genre, decided to give it a shot.

The combat system was a pleasant surprise in it’s simplicity and emulation of actual combat. There are no flashy moves, lengthy/scripted combat sequences or any overt attempt to impress you, but the down to earth mechanics on how to land a blow or the encouraged timely use of parries/sidestepping has it’s own charm if implemented correctly.

Having said that, Elium also provides a challenging environment to play through as there are no healing features other than a small boost upon completing a level. This has been frustrating at times, but ultimately I felt that this added to the challenging nature to which I ended up feeling positive about.

I bought this game In baited anticipation in hopes of finding another good semi-roguelike game. Needless to say, I was disappointed by my purchase of this game.

For starters “Is the game fun?” Yes, it can be. Would I recommend buying it? Based on my experience, no, you shouldn’t. At least not until some of the game’s quirks are ironed out.

Graphically speaking, it’s okay, I’ve seen better by Unity’s standard, it runs good enough on most rigs. The combat does have it’s moments (but I will talk about that in a bit). Level design is about on par with what I expect from Indie developers, but there are a couple questionable choices.

Swordsman VR

A solid 8.5/10, though maybe not for everyone.

It’s a very fun experience and this game has improved so much over the last 6 months. Back then, I probably wouldn’t have reviewed it as positively as I will do now. Sure, it has its issues, but with weekly updates, Swordsman VR is constantly improving. The developers are always approachable and take as many suggestions as they can, implementing them to the best of their abilities.

This game will not show you mercy. Do not underestimate the AI. If you don’t upgrade your skills early on, you’ll have a hard time surviving. Modifiers will change the way you play too.

TL:DR Pros and Cons list at the bottom of the review!

Alright, I know I don’t have much playtime quite yet, but I’m writing this review to say… for the $14 sale price? This is an absolute steal. I’d even say the normal $20 price is well worth it.

I’ve played a ton of melee combat games. Gorn, Blade & Sorcery, Hellsplit: Arena, Until You Fall, Battle Talent, Swords of Gargantua. All really enjoyable depending on what I’m in the mood for. Yet somehow, Swordsman is filling a void I didn’t know I needed filled.

Bannerman

Bannerman

If I was to describe Bannerman in two words… its would be ‘skillful brutality’

and when I say skillful I mean more than just proficiency in the combat systems. Bannerman does a good job of teaching you the ropes, but the core combat loop requires a moderate level of skill through out as you will be repeatedly killed as you learn not necessarily enemy patterns, but more of how each enemy fights

You can easily be killed at a moments notice if you act without thought, as you are required to fight through multiple segments of single to the death combat to progress through the various levels

Bannerman is, in my opinion, a terrific game that is an example of the ability of a single person to create a game that both entertains through accurate swordplay, beautiful pixel graphics and a morally grey story. Spoiler Ahead.

One of my favourite aspects of the Bannerman’s story is the consequences for the players actions. While you have very little ability to choose what you do, the flashbacks and horrific nightmares that your character has due to the violence he has committed is symbolic of historical evidence that knights during the medieval era suffered from PTSD and it explores the dark side of fantasy that few games look at. Instead of elves and dwarves shooting colourful beams at one another, Bannerman explores a visceral and bloody conflict where there is no clear victor, especially since the player increasingly becomes disillusioned with their cause and comrades.

Blades of Gory

Blades of Gory

I love this game! The polish and little details really give it a charm that makes you want to replay it over and over. The mechanics of the game itself are similar to fighting genre games that reward footsies/neutral play. You should also understand that this game is DIFFICULT. The bosses take different strategies to defeat and you have to think about how you’re going to approach it or you WILL die.

This is also a great game if you’re into speedrunning! It has a good run time for a speedrun and lots of interesting visuals for the viewer. Getting the mechanics of the fights down feels very rewarding in the context of a speedrun. There are some speedruns on youtube that you can check out if you’re interested.

Pretty fun little brawler. Best part of course is the pixel art, with detailed sprites and nice animations. Final boss is such a BS, but the journey to him is quick and fun. It’s not that hard, really, just don’t overthink it.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

Chivalry…where do I start?

When I first heard about the game in late 2012, I knew I’d be hooked. Unfortunately, my computer couldn’t run it at the time. Flash forward to when I had a new computer come May/June of 2013, and I was having the time of my life! Foolhardy, yet visceral combat, amazing voiceovers, and the most in-depth melee combat I had ever seen at the time…it was remarkable. The combat was very in-depth, yet nobody was quite above anyone else at the time. Timing and footing was everything. My goal as a player at the time was to reach level twenty, and unlock all veteran helmets for each of the four classes. (Keep in mind that there was zero customization at this point in time, apart from switching from default to veteran helmets, which didn’t work half of the time)

Real player with 1222.1 hrs in game

After all these years, reaching level 54, I cannot recommend the game. I have 500+ hours on this, and all I can think of is remembering the good times. I hate this game so much because I used to love it to the point it became my most played game for almost one year. I’m gonna tell you why you should avoid this game that has become deteriorated over time (and has become less valuable than it was at release):

The good times, that was when this game didn’t have regular crashes (it had none in fact). Now it crashes EVERY FIRST TIME you join the game, you Alt+F4 and then you have to again load the game. THEN it’s very likely the server you wanted to join is full. You have to wait. Then it’s possible that it crashes at the character screen etc… It’s also possible to simply crash mid-game. I once had over 16 crashes while waiting for the server list to load. This never happened at the start.

Physics based simulation style sword fighting game taking place in 17th century Poland. Think of a cross between… Bushido Blade, Exanima, & Die by the Sword. Created by one of the main animators for Witcher 3. Really amazing to see an animator translate their ideas about animation into gameplay. I’m sure a lot of animators get frustrated by game design limitations.

This would be a really fun party game if you have a couple controllers! It’s easy to learn, very difficult to master, but it’s very fun and feels authentic through and through.
