Story of a Gladiator
Story of a Gladiator is a small arena beat ‘em-up game in which we try to avoid getting a bloody nose.
The story is told quite quickly: Our family and friends are killed by the Romans and we manage to escape so that we do not end up in slavery… or worse. Finally, we spend the day with fighting and drinking alcohol in the company of shady ladies - until one day we meet a famous gladiator who gives us some advice on how to become a great champion ourselves. And so our first fight of many begins in the arena…

The game is very fun and interesting, we definitely need more Gladiator games as there hasn’t been any good one’s in modern times, it’s very sad that such genre is not being looked into by developers and game studios. Ryse of Rome had gladiator mode, but it’s not like Gladiator Begins/Road to Colosseum. I am glad this game came out, and hopefully people show interest in this game, so we can get more of this genre.
As for the game
The game is very fun and actually very hard, my only issue with it is the lack of story and in depth customization, the game feels very limited in that aspect, it’s not even as good in terms of depth as sword and sandals to be honest. The graphics are amazing, the armour looks very nice, I just wish there was more depth to fight styles, weapon, character customization, story arc, training and maybe companions and such in fights. There is a lot the game can do, I played all the levels and have 3 stars in all of them, took me 9hrs total play time

TLDR: Functionnal but underwhelming combat arena experience. The arena mechanics with crowd pleasing and gory kills is not well implemented enough and you are left with a restrictive third person hack&slash that is easily outcompeted with proper hack & slash Japanese titles or the richness of western open world games with similar combat.
Button Mashing FIesta that hints at a more refined system of skill and rewards related to combo making and crowd pleasing. The implementation is hit and miss, there is only one combo to speak of and about half a dozen special moves, and it is easy to find AI gaps to exploit or stick to a simple attack and defense formula that will win most encounters with enough patience and grinding at the health of enemies. If you get bored and try to innovate the enemy might start a combo of its own stun lock you and force you to restart which disincentivizes you from doing that. Rewards and progression and poorly thought out, and feel mostly pointless, equipment does not carry over from fight to fight, and the in-arena merchant is often absent. It might be that the actual character sheet is tied to the Pay to Win model of the phone market and was simply ripped out for this port, it wouldnt surprise me. In terms of granularity of control, responsiveness and overall fun factor of the combat I found infinity blade on the Apple Store much more fulfilling that this.

Quick review for now (because this game needs it, and steam users in general need it due to there being a lack of good action ‘fighter’ games)
– This game is Great!!!
One of those rare ‘well-rounded’ games, where everything from the story-line, to the music to the graphics to the gameplay are all ‘good’ or better.
There’s nothing here that will ‘stop’ you from enjoying it.
It even has online gameplay against other people! (Though that’s not it’s strong point so don’t buy it just for that).

Ryse: Son of Rome
fun game that holds up today even though it was just a “tech demo” when release. decent story, solid graphics, and mediocre gameplay. plays like a simpler version of the batman arkham series. the only downside is that campaign is very short (4-6hrs) and the combat is repetitive. still, worth checking out since it plays like an extended action movie.

Contrary to what the game’s title might leave you believing, the protag’s name is not actually Ryse, but it’s actually Marius. Some characters do tell him to rise from time to time when he’s being a lazy slacker falling asleep in the middle of a war, and the subtitles use an i instead of a y, but that’s just semantics. I’d also consider the “Son of Rome” part to be a little inaccurate since a city can’t conceive people. Although people can be conceived inside cities, and Marius’s daddy-o, Leontius sure laid down the pipe on his wife Septima. And we have confirmation that he did so at least twice since Marius has a sister! I might be going a little off track here, so let’s get down to the game itself.

Domina
This is a ridiculously fun game albeit excruciatingly punishing most times, a single fuck up and you may as well start over. The game has some serious potential with tons of room for improvements and add ons, do bear in mind that the dev team is just one very dedicated guy, so to see all this being produced by one individual is nothing short of amazing.
PROS:
-Soundtracks are incredible, really fitting for the theme and invokes a sense of bloodlust.
-Awesome pixel art style graphics, very pleasing to the eyes to witness pixel art dismemberments.

Wonderful Updates + Save now included!
I bought this game day 1 even without the save feature. I still loved it but hey! You don’t like it because it didn’t have the save feature? Fair enough. This dev though, such a great person from what I’ve seen. Lots of complaints, most of them obnoxious and he still updates almost daily, bug fixes and all that to get the game running just right. I think the dev’s enthusiasm and passion for this game will keep it running for a good while. Now on to the game…

GLADIUM
Hey! If you enjoy short and sweet reviews, follow my curator page here! I am an independent Curator providing reviews and insights to the games that need the spotlight! Thank you! :)
Gladium is the project of Eirik Wiklund a one man developer studio and yes, the game reminded me of Domina , a strategy game where you took charge of a Ludus, training and preparing Gladiators in a management approach, where the fights were simulated. Both games enjoy the pixel art style and that’s where the comparison should end.

This is quite a difficult game to review tbh. It is a very unforgiving game, some of the bosses you will fight will kill you many times, the part that some people may dislike the most is it’s grind system to be able to defeat the bosses or even try another go at them (you gain blood points to trade for perks and for another chance at a boss if you fail), meaning that if you lose to a boss you will have to play either normal mode or horde mode to try again, making the game VERY repetitive. You will also earn gold to unlock new equipment, which is necessary to try different strategies as you cannot fight all the bosses in the same manner (at least I advise againts it). Ultimately I’m giving it a thumbs up because I had fun the whole 14 hours I played and I even got a little addicted, the theme helped as I really like gladiator style fighting games, but be warned, if you get frustrated easily this may not be for you.

Ludus
Bought this game with the bundle, probably only paid about 4 bucks for it. Still not worth it sadly. Really cool idea and foundation, but too damn buggy. I’ve lost progress so many times from the game not saving (or only part will save). For instance, I fully geared out my main Gladitator with top tier gear, finished playing for the night. The next day, both my money and the gear was just gone. If you log out with money invested in the trader, it too will disappear. I’ve gone into a tournament with my main Gladiator, and he just didn’t spawn in the arena. His opponent phased through the door (where my glad was supposed to come out of) and went off screen where he slowly killed my gladiator. I just exited out and loaded back in to keep him alive but of course that means all the money i had in the trader disappeared again. Just so many bugs with this game, which is sad because i actually really like it, but its damn near unplayable. Buy at your own risk, or better yet, just don’t buy it.

I like the overall concept of the game but this game is broken in so many ways that it kills all desire to play it. A few examples were all my family members died within the first three days of the game. The fishing system is utter crap please dear god take out the random key strokes that are needed to catch a fish. Another issue I ran into was my gladiators got stuck in their shacks and there is absolutely nothing to be done. We will see what the Devs do to patch the product over the next few months but as of now don’t waste you money.

Gladia
This is not intermediate stage. This is concept stage. This is EXTREMELY overpriced. Feedback at this point is absurd as literally everything needs a ton of work.

Swords and Sandals 2 Redux
If a potential buyer is reading this, I recommend reading the conclusion paragraph first.
If this is someone who has purchased and played this game already, I want you to add any more bugs/recommendations to the list in the comments.
Game-Breaking Bugs
-When the AI jumps, it results in them gaining essence (two turns of sleep) while the player loses essence for jumping.
-When using a ranged weapon, the only way to access your inventory for potions is if you get close to the enemy that only allows access to inventory if out of range, which for a bow is anywhere but in close range.

Well okay, first time ill write a long review.
I have played around 20 hours and gotta say it wasnt bad, like the game could be really good IF there wasnt so much buggs like holy sh*t!
I know its hard making games by only yourself, trust me, Im also a solo game developer but you should instead of making 3 or 4 games focus on one or two untill its stable and as good as it can be. Just my thoughts…
Well now Im going to talk about the game.
The story is great and just like s&s2. Some people dont like the graphics but i think its cool. The weapons could been in a better quality doe cause they are kinda blurry and upscaled it feels like. Sad cause the characters and armor quality looks great.
