Prodeus
I’ve played a lot of retro-style FPS this year as I’ve recently gotten really into the genre. In just this year I discovered all of New Blood and Doom Eternal dropped as well. Somehow, Prodeus manages to squeeze through the competition and quickly become one of my favorites.
Before I get into it: if you like classic-style FPS, Doom, Dusk, Halo, whatever.. then I’ll save you a minute:
just buy Prodeus and play it.
Prodeus is a retro-style FPS with rad sprites and a stylistically low-framerate protagonist. It plays like Doom meets Halo, with a touch of Metroid Prime here-and-there. You have maze-like maps, keycards for locked doors, monsters to kill, big guns to get. You know the drill.

I don’t write many reviews, no really, check my account. But this is a game i feel like i have sunken enough hours in to really get a feel for how the game is and how everything as a whole surrounding this game is perfect.
I’ll start with how I backed this on Kickstarter because I thought it looked cool. I’m not absolutely huge on classic style FPS’s, i did play doom growing up, but it wasn’t exactly my entire life. I enjoyed it growing up and that’s about as far as that goes.
With that being said, I would just like to extend my absolute LOVE for this game in many different ways, inside and outside of the game.

Project Warlock
Love letter to the oldschool
Project Warlock is an arcade shooter developed by Buckshot Software as a nostalgia-driven tribute to times when a story in FPS games rolled as a panel at the end of the chapter. While John Carmack’s infamous quote “story in a game, is like a story in a porn movie” has been challenged countless times since the 90s, it does capture the essence of the shooters from that time. Meticulous, maze-like levels, armoury’s worth of guns and secrets behind a fake wall – gameplay was everything. A simple credo Project Warlock at large adheres to, while also adding few ideas of its own. By all means, it is a modern retelling of the classics, rather than an attempt at copying one, and it shows.

Okay, I would love nothing more than to give this game a positive review, because with such a cheap asking price and so many good qualities, I can understand why it has decent reviews. But difficulty aside, this game is riddled with glitches. Which is sad, because so much holds back what otherwise would be a solid game.
So, lets start with the good aspects:
The music, atmosphere, level themes, and graphics are amazing.
The price is insanely cheap.
You can tell a lot of love went into making this game.

The Citadel

like the product description says: a love letter to 90’s fps like doom, wolfenstein 3d, etc. It scratches the nostalgia itch while also being it’s own game.

The level design rewards exploration. Sometimes there’s an ammo crate on a roof that you can see from the path the level has you take. Sometimes you think ‘‘what if I climb this?’’ or ‘‘are there any fake walls in this room?'’. I’ve poured over environments excitedly for ages trying to find the way to an are I’d seen from far away.

What a bizarre experience this was.
The Citadel is a very bleak story of martyr, you’ve probably seen the artwork by now. It’s full of semi-sexual content which will probably be repulsive for many, but those that choose to endure it. There awaits a very fun game that will make you feel uncomfortable in the best way possible.
The story is rather vague and you need to put the dots together yourself, there’s total of two characters who have any dialogue with the protagonist through the entire story. Ending doesn’t help either, it’s rather open ended what actually happened there. But unlike similar stories that fail to give any sort of closure, here we can tell what could happen based on visual clues throughout the game.

WRATH: Aeon of Ruin
Boring; too easy.
The visuals are great, the sound design is on point, the artifact system and the restriction of savescumming is a great innovation, the Armblade lunge functioning as a mid-air dash is an awesome idea, the gore and gunplay is especially UNF – but the game just flunks the enemy/level design.
The levels are huge and detailed, but also meandering and too reliant on ez forgettable filler encounters. 90% of the time I can nullify the challenge in any indoors encounter by simply backpedaling out of a doorway and forcing enemies to fight me one by one in a chokepoint. The levels rarely force you in a disadvantageous situation where you have no escape routes or safe corners, so they feel way too easy and repetitive because you can always apply the same winning strategy. Outdoors encounters are just circlestrafefests, with no enemy type (other than the Executioner, who appears only rarely) actively preventing you from hiding or running circles around everything.

More than a simple throwback -shooter, Wrath: Aeon of Ruin feels like an homage to not only Quake, but also owns a great deal to Hexen II; A highly underrated game, both now and at the time - mainly due to its much larger levels (although not as confusing as Hexen 1) and more intricate puzzles, somewhat deterring from the experience at hand.
What the game does, it does good. It stands perfectly fine on its own and while some aspects of it will undoubtedly feel reminiscent of Quake, a lot of other elements have been replicated and refined from games such as Hexen II and Daikatana; Not only the save-system, but the sense of speed, gravity and sense of momentum, something which was not as prevalent in (Vanilla) Quake.

Blood: Fresh Supply™
Of the holy trinity of Build Engine games BLOOD is arguably the best one!
TL;DR: BLOOD is fast, intricatly designed, extremely fun to play, and also really hard. The Level Design is great and the maps flow into each other seamlessly. The Enemy Design is perfect, each enemy type is distinguishable and requires a different approach, which leads to an infinite amount of possible and engaging encounters. I recommend this game to anyone with an ounce of appreciation for FPS games.
BLOOD is my favourite FPS game of the 90s and one of my favourite video games in general. It may not be as influential as Doom or Quake, but it has a special place in my heart due to its charm.

Mad Sector
This game took me on an existential journey like no game before it. It helped me understand who I am as a man, and what my purpose on this planet is. Pick up this game if you are looking for a transformative experience that will give you new insights into the inner workings of humanity. Truly a marvel.

Nice little retro-style shooter.
You progress through levels by finding a key and bringing it somewhere else, usually on the other side of the map. You get to shoot a lot of monsters on the way. There’s a nice variety of weapons.
This game is nothing deep or revolutional, but it’s fun for a few hours.

PowerSlave (DOS Classic Edition)
This game is fun…at times. This is a classic I guess. there are a lot of good things for this game honestly, but all of it is bogged down by absolute bullshit level design and difficulty. This game also seems to “trap” you sometimes by making you use magic, but oh bad decision you now can’t use any more magic cause the only way to replenish magic is in a room full of fireball turrets that kill you in two hits, and it is the only way to continue the level, and so far dying in this game is absolute BULLSHIT. you die and yeah it is cool they show your character’s arm and the type of damage it took before you died, but now you have to wait god knows how long to respawn, it is just best to reload your game after you die and start the level over from the beginning, some of the weapons are useless or not worth using cause sometimes they backfire and murder you. I haven’t beaten the game yet and I want to, but it is gonna be so SLOW because of the ridiculousness that occurs in this game, so I will be honest and say this game is sometimes fun, but it will drain fast due to the traps this gmae hurls at you, so I would say wait for PowerSlave: Exhumed when it comes out

An absolutely fantastic game and one of my favorites! Sadly, largely unknown. The setting is very unique, the maps are huge and detailed, the soundtrack is one of the best I’ve ever heard and the game is just fun to play. Try it if you like old school fps games, exploration with occasional platforming and traps or are into Indiana Jones type of stuff.
For smoother gameplay and optional controller support (works extremely well), I recommend running this with BuildGDX.
The console versions of this game released back in the day were pretty much rebuilt from scratch and are quite different as a result (in a good way). Hopefully we’ll see those on Steam as well at some time in the future!
