Kio’s Adventure

Kio’s Adventure

Kio’s Adventure centers around a young girl named Kio lost in a world gone mad after a mysterious earthquake ravages her hometown. Though she may appear helpless at first, our protagonist is actually quite brave in the face of adversity, and determined in her quest to save her friends no matter the cost. It’s difficult to comprehend the true hell of the “adventure” Kio is put through in this game. I really grew to like this character with her quick-witted attitude and unwillingness to give up. I was truly rooting for her victory. But, we don’t always get what we want.

Lemme preface this by saying that I did not go into this expecting horror or anything especially dark or gritty, but rather as a person who’s played just about every guro/ryona game under the sun. I call them like I see them and unfortunately, Kio’s Adventure was not a particularly fun one. Even as a joke. Even as a two dollar joke.

If you like ryonage and haven’t gotten around to this then it might be worth your time (big emphasis on ‘might’). It’s like a complete Demonophobia with a touch of The Witch’s House with overall quality somewhere in-between… but skewing heavily towards the former (bad). It’s an objectively poor game, but you could squeeze some fun out of it if you’re into this sort of thing. What ‘sort of thing’? Well, you know.

Johnathan overdoses on various pharmaceutical consumable prescriptions and proceeds to complete the most painstakingly difficult, yet unbelievably satisfying to complete, levels. Very interesting puzzle game. Would recommend if you’ve got some extra time and money.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number

a great game that continues the story of Hotline Miami and takes place, before, during and after the first game. The second game is told in kind of a Quentin Tarantino way, jumping back and fourth in the timeline. It is not necessary to play the first game before this one but i would recommend it, since i believe that the first one is also brilliant. If you are a fan of the first game there is no reason why you would’t enjoy this one.

I regret not playing this game sooner. As someone who loves fast-paced shooter games, Hotline Miami 2 hits the spot. In this game you have to embrace death in order to do well. Accept the fact that dying a lot is an inevitability or you won’t have a fun time playing this. I didn’t do that any of that initially and suffered greatly. Eventually I just decided to throw safety into the trash, and I did far better then before. My only real complaint is the level design. It ranges from: really well made, to okay, and then to downright annoying. Thankfully most of the levels fall under the first two categories.

This game is amazing! It is a pretty short game, and it can be beaten in only a couple of long sessions. Frankly, I couldn’t really see anybody playing this in many short sessions, as it is a very grind-y game, however, if you often find yourself having long chunks of time in your day, this game is a nice way to fill that time.

Hilarious, brutal, violent, and heartwarming. Those are the words I would use to describe this game. Mostly violent.

BUTCHER

BUTCHER

Butcher is a game that is deeply rooted in the violent, gritty run-and-gun games of the mid-to-late 90’s, and does a perfect job of recreating that feeling while still retaining its own unique identity.

First off, let’s talk graphics, since that’s the first thing you’re probably gonna notice from this game’s store page. While taking obvious visual inspiration from Abuse (1996)’s dark and grimy run-and-gun action and the gory violence of Doom, Quake, and even Liero, the game still manages to create its own, entirely consistent low-resolution aesthetic.

BUTCHER is a lovesong to the type of game that concerned moms and the media imagined when the ESRB was just a twinkle in Senator Joe Lieberman’s eye. You are an emotionless Terminator-style robot sent to eradicate the last vestiges of humanity in an assortment of bleak environments like foundries and cyberpunk cities. Your victims gasp and gurgle as they bleed out, or get eaten by mutant wildlife, or crushed by machinery; oppressive electronica thrums in the background of each level.

You get the idea.

CARRION

If you’re looking to take control of a living flood of meat this is the game for you, but the game has it’s flaws and the biggest one I can find is the confusing level layout and disorienting map. You can easily get lost in the map and find yourself slithering around in circles trying to find your way out. But other than that, game’s perfect, I really hope they make a 3d sequel. 8/10

I like being squishy tooth monster - in my regular life I cannot eat coworkers nor squeeze into tubes. It is nice to play a character who can eat their coworkers and squeeze into tubes.

Just Ignore Them

Just Ignore Them

I decided to play this game because I am a retro junkie and I desperately needed my next fix. It was only $3.99, and it enticed me with its gore and horror elements. Despite having a small, yet particular qualm with the game’s narrative, Just Ignore Them is a fun, story-driven game that manages to summon an eerie atmosphere as you play Mark, a man tormented by monsters following him since he was a child.

At its heart, this game is an all too familiar tale for those of us who have dealt with childhood trauma. You cannot really put your finger on why, but ever since your father’s disappearance you have been plagued by these ‘monsters.’ Your mother tells you they aren’t real – but then what are those things you see, those whispers you hear behind closed doors, and who the hell bought you that god forsaken creepy teddy bear!?

I found this game by accident and thought it looked interesting and wanted to give it a try. I love horror games; I love point and click games; I love puzzsles. What could go wrong with this purchase?

A Lot

Unfortunately, there was more done wrong than right in this game. I think the devs were trying a bit too hard to be clever with some of their puzzles than they were trying to build a fun, playable, and intelligent game. I just want to start off by saying PLEASE get someone to proofread your game. There were so many typos and punctuation errors and wording that simply made no sense that it KILLED your storyline right when it could have been important, but I’m not really sure if it was important or not beause it was unintelligable. I played through this game TWICE and I still have no idea on if any of this stuff actually made sense. I’m pretty sure it didn’t, but hey, I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

Mother Russia Bleeds

Mother Russia Bleeds

tl;dr: Game has more depth than it initially seems, sound/art design is fantastic, and it actually gets support from devs

One of the most brutal, rewarding beatemups out there. And I’m not only talking about the aesthetic, which is brutally beautiful in its own right.

First, to get it out of the way: Mother Russia Bleeds is not a particularly well-balanced game. It’s a hard game on its normal difficulty, sometimes approaching the point of cheapness with the amount of enemies they can throw at you. This is especially hard when you’re playing by yourself - the game can often turn into a game of managing space so you don’t get annihilated - but this issue is mostly alleviated if you have a co-op partner. If you’re new or casual to beatemups, go for Easy for your first run.

Mother Russia Bleeds is a new age classic that suffers from some bad game balancing mechanics and, as it stands currently, some bugs that can ruin the game play experience.

Story

Not going to lie, they actually went all out with this. It’s a pretty deep story considering this is a simple beat ‘em up game. There is some fairly rich dialog during and between the stages that set up a lot of the story and tap in to your emotions so you care more about the journey / characters lives. The bosses usually all have some kind of “Bad guy monolog” so that it fires you up to just want to kill them before the fight begins which I thought was a really nice touch.

My Work Is Not Yet Done

My Work Is Not Yet Done

My Work Is Not Yet Done is a pilgrimage simulator following the final days of the inquisitor Avery, the last remaining survivor of the Empire’s doomed excursionary efforts into the remote and unaccountable Reach. Tasked with tracking down the source of an inscrutable signal, she must navigate, survey and survive an eerie, ever-shifting landscape reclaimed by nature — and perhaps something stranger.

My Work Is Not Yet Done seeks to provide a unique and innovative take on the survival genre aimed at accurately reproducing the physical and psychological experience of being alone in the wilderness, resituating the player’s role within nature as an interloper rather than conquistador. The game is set in an expansive open world environment that eschews the genre tropes of cold weather survival for a dense, oppressively rainy and humid forest, seamlessly blending procedural generation with a variety of handcrafted locations to ensure a sense of constant disorientation even across repeat playthroughs.

It is part of an ongoing series of works within a larger shared universe dedicated to examining questions of theological and cosmic horror: issues such as faith, weakness, devotion and loneliness — and the concomitant suffering contingent to such experiences.

Features

  • Combat-less exploration and survival gameplay, based on authentic bushcraft and land navigation techniques

  • Deep, systemically-reactive survival simulation mechanics, focusing on both physical and psychic conditions

  • A beautiful and expansive open world featuring real-time weather, atmospheric conditions, and day/night progression

  • Dynamic environments that react to the player’s condition and behaviour

  • Stark, striking 1-bit visuals, with an immersive HUD (and no hunger/thirst meters)

  • A free-form unscripted narrative experience built around emergent gameplay and ambient lore

Turbo Kid

Turbo Kid

Turbo Kid is a BMX-powered pixel-art Metroidvania gore-fest based on the film of the same name.

This is the future, the world as we know it is gone. You are The Kid, a lone warrior on a journey to cross the Wasteland in search of hope. What you will find on your way however is a land riddled with scoundrels and creeps which you’ll have to go through - sometimes quite literally - in order to survive.

Turbo Kid’s choc-full-of-mayhem Turbo Glove™ will help make your quest smoother and much, much bloodier! Turbo Blast, Electric Shocks, your trusty machete, and then some; use the array of weapons at your disposal to slash, rip apart, or explode enemies into hysterical and over-the-top splashes of gore!

Run, crawl, jump, hang, and, for the very first time in a Metroidvania (don’t research this), bike your way through the levels! Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the height of human-powered transport technology: the BMX Bike!

Move around the map faster, access new areas, and practice your bike tricks in preparation for the 1998 Wasteland Olympics Freestyle BMX Event. No need to find an unrusted fence to lock your bike in this game! It’ll be there at the touch of a button whenever you need it.

Our story begins immediately after the events of the movie, as the Kid, you must cross the Wasteland after losing a friend in a tragic bloody battle. On your way, you will meet an array of colorful characters, some friends, some foes, and some in-between, who will offer advice, quests, fights, and jokes (lots of jokes).

We’re really proud of the story we’ve created for the game and we think you’ll enjoy it too. That being said, if you’re only in it for the gameplay and the story isn’t for you, you won’t even need to skip the cutscenes, you can basically just ignore and walk past them.

Like the Metroidvanias of old, TURBO KID allows you to explore the different zones and defeat bosses in the order you see fit, favoring exploration and discovery over a linear narrative. Over the course of the game, you will also be asked to make personal and moral choices that will affect the process of the game allowing for multiple playthroughs with different paths and outcomes.
