RPGolf

RPGolf

RPGolf is a sub-par experience that is too simplistic to be a convincing RPG and too inept to be a passable golf game.

It seemed like the perfect melding of a dungeon crawler and the Gentleman’s Game, a mix that I hoped would scratch an odd itch to play golf and roll stats at the same time. However, after breezing through multiple rounds on the main course, completing the main quest and most of the side quests, it’s clear that RPGolf does not deliver on it’s namesake, as the RPG elements are very simplistic and repetitive, while the golf mechanics are genuinely disappointing.

Short Version

A short and fun game that tries to combine golf and action RPG elements. Of course this is not the first game to try to do this, and it is not the best. It falls a bit short on both the golf and the action RPG parts, but it was fun enough for me to come back to keep playing the game. There is a mobile version for dollar cheaper, but I did not play that one and cannot offer any contrasting commentary between the two.

Recommended with a few exceptions.

It’s a mini-golf puzzle reflex arcade bullet-hell(?) game. Dragging the mouse for power and aiming is pretty standard. Difficulty varies wildly so expect some levels to frustrate.

Where it’s let down is with the controls, you’re supposed to click and drag then let go to shoot, except often randomly the mouse ‘sticks’ and then requires an extra click to shoot, I’ve no idea why and it’s the biggest cause of all my failures on each level. Also the drag bar is difficult to judge the power/aim and will have you rocketing across the level in the wrong direction where only a nudge was necessary.

The writing for this is really funny, interesting, and well-done: a science-fiction comedy about AI, physics, computing, determinism, cryptocurrency, psychology, space, that has you questioning the meaning of life. There are even “ads” that the AI makes you click on that link to an external website with bizarre advertisements for products that help flesh out the story and who this AI “Susan” is - a character on par with GLaDOS.

The gameplay and difficulty is extremely well-tuned. There are some hard levels but they should only take 5-7 minutes of trying to beat, and when you do it’s very satisfying. The difficulty doesn’t constantly increase as there are plenty of relaxing levels throughout and some series of levels that just beat themselves for the visual effects. After beating a challenging level, sit back and enjoy a few easy ones and the story. This game is all about the experience.

DOG GONE GOLFING

DOG GONE GOLFING

Dog Gone Golfing is an adorable title where you pick a dog and go golfing…with hockey pucks because the dogs chewed all the golf balls up. The game itself is fairly simple, with the objective being to get the puck in the hole in as few moves as possible. This game is easy to pick up and play, and if you aren’t careful, you might get sucked in for hours. I was really impressed with the amount of content that was in this game despite it being only $2.29. Overall, it’s a great and charming game for your library. :)

A simple Worms-style gameplay, at a rock-bottom price. Could have used more polish. For example, the functions of the two action-types are not explained. There are no golf clubs to select, nor directions to aim. The mechanics of obsticles, wind speeds, and ability-skills are not explained. The system of meta-game unlocks are not explained. Also, I am very annoyed that the xbox-style gamepad controller doesn’t work.

If you have the patience to look past the short-comings, then I think there is a golf-campaign to be explored. You will be limited to only one club, only hitting the ball straight ahead, and a having to learn as you go. Maybe you can even get your controller working with it. Dog Gone Golfing uses the Game Maker game engine. I tried playing this on an Ubuntu 18.10 system.

The one thing it needs to make it perfect is a replay shortcut button because it’s tedious to go to the top left corner every time. Also the yellow replay button is unintuitively placed in between the exit and “next” button. I think those should have been placed vertically instead of horizontally but nvm.

Arcane golf is, well a golf game, kind of. You are expected to put the ball in a hole, but going through 2d levels it’s closer to a platformer with golf controls than to other minigolf type games.

The visuals of the game are very pleasing, and the game actually has some story behind it, with a character talking you through as you progress with the levels, nothing special but adds some to the world.

The gameplay for the most part is also fun, but there are a few exceptions, most levels are designed with a specific way of beating them in mind, but during some I just couldn’t figure out what that way could be, since they were really open, with no real indicators what the devs had in mind, some lightly tinted wall bricks as to indicate a first hit, or a place to aim at would be a nice touch, as it was admittedly a bit frustrating to just be stuck and try to find a valiable strategy, while messing with angles, places to shoot from or speeds of the hit. It was rare (only a few levels like that) but as there are no guides for the game it was bothersome.

Graviter

Graviter

Graviter is a simple-to-understand but rather difficult gravity based puzzle game. The premise is odd, you take on the role of the object trying to search for your lost cat after it was eaten and then spat out by a black hole; you will need to cross paths with all of the paw prints on screen from level to level, presumably following the footsteps to find the cat. Helping you along the way are other planets that help to alter the gravity fields around to maneuver around the screen.

This game is a simple concept, but done very cleanly, with quite a few puzzles. I’ve only put a little bit of time into it, but I already know how the mechanics work. It’s not a difficult game to play, but it takes thought to solve. There are definitely more than one solution on almost all puzzles, but it’s more about your ability to manipulate gravity + picking the right time to use your pauses than a normal “puzzle game”.

TLDR: Clean art, clean mechanics, interesting puzzles (and many of them). Great deal for less than $10.

while i don’t feel comfortable giving this game a thumbs up, its not exactly a thumbs down, regardless i wouldn’t spend more than 2$-3$ dollars on it, 5$ is a little too much to ask i think.
