Dominions 3: The Awakening

Dominions 3: The Awakening

I own Dominions 3 and 4. Started playing Dominions 3, few monts later Dom 4 came out - moved to it.

Now I’m playing Dominions 3 and enormousely enjoying it. Less spells, less magical items than in Dom 4 - somehow even more fun.

Why I like Dominions:

1. Very interesting fantasy setting (not just elfes and other copies of Tolkien imagination) with Valkiries, armoured gorillas, ghouls, giants, chariots, eagle-men, bat-men, spider riders, raptor riders, fiery salamanders, armoured or undead elephants, giant ants, tiny dragonflies, barechested warriors, tritons with amber armour, hydras, halfblind cyclopes, nagas, twoheaded giants, liches, krakens, dragons, mechanical dragons, trolls, tengu, ghosts, lamias, jaguars, werejaguars, powerfull but insane gods, mages of various kinds, assasins, shark knights, Vikings with glamour, Aztects with flying ability and many, many more…

BLUF: This game’s pretty awesome, if you can get past the ancient graphics and focus on the creative/imaginative aspects.

I loved the game. Yes, it is complex, but I think the complexities are actually exagerated. It’s basically raise armies, research spells, invade provinces, collect gold, etc. But somehow I find it 20x more engrossing than any other “4x” game (which I don’t think it quite is). There are little quirks, like that it is turn-based, but then all the movement happens at once for everyone, seasons affect gold income, but they also affect how many mushrooms grow in the forest for your witches to collect, and it’s all these quirks and the plethora of races to play that make the game world feel alive. I love how you are slowly introduced to the lore; it never feels like a chore to read it to get into the game, you just pick up some of it as your priests randomly summon some ultra-powerful seraphim that then randomly gets itself killed by wandering around the map.

I’ve played several thousand hours of this game, and dominions 3. The only other game i’ve played anywhere near as much is tabletop rpgs. But i’m biased, old hand, fan, etc. This guy isn’t. Here’s what he had to say on the Steam forum.

@Stephen:

Earlier tonight, one of the most epic occurences I have ever seen in a video game occured. Seeing that as a sign of a good game and also worth telling about, I decided to post here for your reading pleasure. Since it is only due to a confusing chain of events that this occured, I’m going to tell the full story from start to finish. Enjoy.

Dear friends, I know that many would have you believe that the Pale Ones are extinct, save for the occasional emergence of an Earth Reader or the primitive Pale Ones that are sometimes encountered in remote regions. I am here to set the ancient records straight.

Long have I labored in service to the Ancients, dead and forgotten though they may be to most of the civilized world. Only after extensive research and tireless experimentation had I uncovered a ray of hope in the sea of Agarthan darkness.

I feel like it is important to point that this game this is made by solo dev, who has been great at interacting with everyone in discord and is willing to listen. Now those of us that have dipped into the early access games will know that this is something to cherish lol.

Also the Gameplay well let me go into more detail about that, but it is important to remember that it is early access so may change after i write this review but what i have found so far is:

Tower defence - The towers have this kinda Age of Empires feel to them this brings back that old nostalgia i love that! There also is an Arachnophobia mode this is something i recommend you play i wont tell you why, just trust me it is worth it! The enemy ramp up nicely giving a good amount of failure and felt to me like fun Gameplay

This game is excellent for civ building and tower defense gamers. I am a seasoned (72 years old) player of both. The combo of both makes the game intriguing and challenging. It has depth without drudgery. Folks who do not play either of these genres may like this one just for that reason. To me there is a third aspect included - research. Which path should you choose first. There is no formula - one choice may be the best this go round but not in the same sequence the next time. And there will be a next time as you progress from map to map. Deciding how to allocate workers is another juggling complexity. The Dev’s UI design is a thing of beauty. Easy to use, informative info tips and an effective warning/informing system. Whatever your gaming proclivity I encourage you to give this one a try. It is just that unique.

Logos

Logos

An unusual take on god games. I think you need to have your tinfoil hat stapled to your head, because it is conspiracy theory central. Medicine often decreases health. Providing a clean water supply often drops population. Wild animals periodically group together to attack the human population, and aliens are insistently trying to colonise Earth every couple of years. In short, this is a game written by some folks who just aren’t taking their meds. This game is also quite cheap, and gameplay is compulsive, with everything being a constant jumble of off-setting variables against a random card draw mechanic. There is no guide to the combat system, which is also hilariously cumbersome, and you will probably wind up fighting aliens with bows and arrows at some point. Get ready to march humanity to extinction… because you are the Logos.

This game is awesome! I really like this fresh and new take on the strategy game format.

The game is very complex, and highly addictive.

You play as a godlike entity (the “main logos”) of the Earth, and your goal is to help mankind thru history.

There’s a good spiritual message in the game, that you should care about one another,

take care of the environment, look things in another perspective, and make hard, sometimes questionable decisions for the greater good. It’s not easy, you need to pay attention to a lot of variables (population, echology, etc.) otherwise you will fail very quickly.

Rip Them Off

Rip Them Off

★★★☆☆

First and foremost: this is a mobile game, so its interface and the pacing is build as one. It is also cheaper on iOS (4 euros).

A stylistic tower-defence game that lacks a lot of room for the player to explore, leading to a lot of trial-and-error. Each level consists of a street or more with adjacent buildings. You’ve to figure out which store will be active in the preset buildings so that every customer eventually emptied its wallet by the end of the street. There are no differences between the pedestrians. If they walk on the same side of the street, they’ll all have the same amount of money and they’ll walk at the same speed. They’ll go into the store if there’s room.

This game bills itself as a puzzley tower defense game, but is

none of the above. The way to solve each “puzzle” is to guess

correctly at what kind of shop should go where, and when to

upgrade them. There is no strategy or clue decoding. There is a

help button that tells you the correct answer, and that’s

basically it.

Tower defense games give players choices and tradeoffs. Puzzle

games give players the tools they need to solve the puzzle. This

game gives players a bunch of things to try.

Pros: The music is nice. The flavor text is sometimes amusing.

What a great hidden gem!

A game where you play as a tentacle monster working in an office already promisses originality.

I was reluctant at first, not beeing an avid indie games player, but after playing it for a bit, it really grew on me.

The controls take a while to master, which is a good thing: the feeling of achievement after beating harder levels on hard difficulty is truly great!

The game isn’t very long, about 2 - 4 hours on average to play through all levels. It isn’t a bad thing though, because you can always keep trying to beat the previous high score or other players' scores on theglobal leaderboard.

The Short of it: Not exactly my cup of tea in the long run, but I get why it’s popular. It can be funny, frustrating, and challenging. I think the humour is its best quality. It truly tests your multi-tasking limits.

Reminds me of: If you liked any of those surgeon simulator type games, you’ll probably like Godly Corp.
