Mushroom Savior

Mushroom Savior

Sokoban with teleporters and unusual atmosphere. Forces player to take some leaps of faith here and there, but superior to its prequel, “Mushroom Quest”, in most of ways.

Aborigenus is a short platformer about a warring tribe that has invaded your own sky tribe, taken people away, and you leave in pursuit of the warriors that left, overcoming obstacles and challenges on your way to find them. Your girlfriend is missing as well, and your main goal has been to set off in search of rescuing her, and trying to catch up with the rest of your own tribesman along the way.

This game doesn’t have nearly enough levels. It was over before I even figured out how to use all the features. I only discovered there was more than one magic skill after I was done by looking at the pictures and reviews here. And you only get to ride one single chicken. :-(

–-

After accidentally beating the game with just the spear, level 1 crow shot, and level 1 strength, I decided to play again and figure out the skills system. That’s the closest thing to making the game long enough to be satisfying. Anyway, it’s way easier to defeat the boss with some magic blasts than just using the spear. And if you really want to gain all the skills, it’s possible to grind next to a checkpoint, then kill yourself and repeat, because the enemies respawn when the checkpoint restores you.

Even for an Arkhouse game, this was a very masochistic experience, it’s shame because this game has a great story and I wish more people could experience it - it’s almost like the developer does not want anyone to see his artwork. It took me slightly over 4 hours to complete, it’s pretty long for a 2D bullet-hell, give or take a few hours depending on your reflexes. The narrative is connected to at least 2 other Arkhouse games, so if you skip those you might have a hard time understanding the importance of recurring characters. Even though I love the narrative in his games, Arkhouse stories are very metaphorical, there is some space for personal interpretation. Unfortunately, the difficulty is not fair, I don’t mind challenging gameplay, but a lot of it has to do with confusing hitboxes, punishing checkpoint system, and the need for excessive stage repetition. If you don’t play carefully you can potentially create a very poor checkpoint with low HP, although sometimes you can reload the game and go a bit further back.

Oh this game…

I WANTED to like this game. I SO wanted to! The art style and the music was interesting! And while the game was hard, it was still fun! But then in the middle, the game jumped the shark with a m weird maze and minesweeper level and PLATFORMING levels which made no sense!

And the levels starting getting VERY cheap and annoying! Sadistically cheap! Being hit out of nowhere by attacks you can’t see! Weakpoints that you have to guess to find! And the story jumping the shark like that! And the most annoying thing being much of the non-story text being backwards! That made things VERY annoying to understand!

NUMTATE

NUMTATE

december 2021 edit: the 2.0 update revamped the whole game, so I edited the review to reflect the changes.

numtate is a portmanteau of number and rotate, and sure enough, it’s about rotating numbers so they add up to the one in the middle, called a core. luckily, not much math skill is required, as the core keeps track of the current situation, no need to constantly count what’s around. the core number is the minimum, not the exact goal, though most of the time you won’t have the luxury of going over.

This is an old and fun game that used to be sold by the standalone developer. It’s a shame strategies are not still posted, for it can really be challenging to win. Music soundtrack is pretty iconic… I don’t think the developer supports it anymore but if you’re into magic duels then you’ve probably spent worse money than this.

It’s “TUG-OF-WAR” with fireballs and techno-liches.

Other games come to mind, like

“Aeon Command” (space battles)

“Samurai vs Zombies Defense” (goofy samurai warfare)

and

“Puzzle Chronicles” (the illegitimate child of Tetris and Mortal Kombat)

These game elements are constant:

  • try to hold the line

  • manage your defences

  • beef-up your attacks

  • spam your enemies to death

In Magi, you start by opening magical “channels.” These channels enable your spells and strengthen them. Then, it’s a real-time battle as you queue-up spells for casting. It’s like the building queue in Starcraft or Civ… only it’s your shield spell, or a magic missile, or summoning an imp. As your mage is casting one spell, you have time to set up the next. And the next. You can plan a bit… or panic. Apparently, I’m still fond of panicking.
