Unlock The King 2

Unlock The King 2

2D is replaced by 3D puzzles. It is more complicated now, harder to manage and understand all the possible move options and possibilities.

At least Undo option is added - that I missed during the Part 1. But this option is buggy sometimes, made the piece invisible.

Level 14 - this was not explained before that you can rotate the view with your right mouse button. Discovered that the second before I was giving up and planned to look for solution. And the rotating stops working sometimes, you need to close the game to make it work again.

upd: What you can read below is my original review of the first version of this game. I was pretty upset with my first impression which didn’t live up to my expectations, as you can see it. After I posted this review, the developers were fast to respond, and they fixed things I noted here, and I really, really appreciate it. I played this game to the completion and I must say that now it is a good example of a minimalistic puzzle. So feel free to try it and support the developers. Also, I want to thank Raphael, one of the devs, for the answer you can also read below. It means a lot for me, too.

Pharmakon - Tactical Puzzle

Pharmakon - Tactical Puzzle

Esssentially a turn based puzzle game, Pharmakon asks you to maneuver enemy beasts around by attacking them which can cause them to damage each other in collisions or due to the area effect of each beasts death explosion. This is complicated by the rage mechanic which means you can only indirectly damage each beast twice before it attacks you anyway.

The complexity is added to by the use of elemental damage, so each piece you can equip for a given shot will do more or less (or no) damage against a given target, and the positioning of the pieces you have within the shape of your drone - minus any spots damaged by beast attacks you haven’t yet repaired, using points gained by scrapping pieces you have “spare”. You also have a limited supply of calibration points to spend on special attacks, and there is a screen where you can experiment with which attacks are available, and their cost.

The idea of the game is original and intriguing.

Unfortunately its execution is terrible.

The game punishes players that are doing well and aids the struggling ones. This isn’t sound.

Furthermore the player needs to tend to a lot of repetitive mechanical tedium (repairing and putting pieces back) which gets old fast.

After progressing into the higher levels I suddenly longed to solve a sudoku.

Solving them at least makes me feel like I accomplished something.

Unlock The King 3

Unlock The King 3

So, you haven’t learned your lesson and you’re here for your third outing on Black Friday. Set your watch and hit the panic button, because it’s go time. When the clock strikes midnight and myriads of strangers produce an assortment of cutting utensils—some legal and some not so legal—you realize you goofed, and it’s time to abort for the third time in a row. You shove strangers, but not too many since it’ll make it easier for the devil to follow you. Dodge descending blades, leap over toppled grandmas, and slap on your gravity boots so you can take to the walls and bypass the mob. You now understand the gameplay concept of Unlock the King 3.

The bugs, poor camera, and annoying 3D boards of Unlock the King 2 are gone, but now the camera is Y-inverted, there are fewer levels, and it feels as though the developer just didn’t care about the quality of the puzzles anymore. So many sections of puzzles, including pieces and buttons, go unused – and not even in a “red herring” manner. They don’t serve to distract or confuse because there’s no reason to consider them.

It’s cheap and I didn’t hate it, but it’s not really worth the time. The first in the trilogy was the best.

Shuffle chess pieces to clear a path for its titular centerpiece in Unlock the King. While its 100 stages aren’t of consistent quality, the sheer quantity offered for its minimum price point make it an easy shoe-in for brain teaser fans.

Similar to its developer’s other works, UTK is about making way for its central figure. Apart from pawns, every piece makes an appearance here, differing primarily in quantity and stage geometry to keep you invested. It’s a simple formula that’s guaranteed to work, though it is admittedly repetitive. Bread-and-butter chess boards make way for switches in its late half, transforming the playing field and opening up new possibilities.

Imagine it’s Black Friday, and you’ve made the misguided decision to take advantage of some deal you are convinced is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (if only because you went and got trampled). When the clock strikes midnight and myriads of strangers produce an assortment of cutting utensils—some legal and some not so legal—you realize you goofed, and it’s time to abort. You shove strangers, dodge descending blades, leap over toppled grandmas, and shimmy through paths so narrow they would make a spelunker fill their adult diaper. You now understand the gameplay concept of Unlock the King.

In similar vein to games like Super Hexagon, 140, Gauge and Duet, oO is a minimalistic game with simple objectives and simple controls - on the surface. But while things may look easy enough at first glance, the challenge comes in mastering the sparse mechanics you are given to get past whatever sadistic obstacles oO’s glowing, circular world cares to throw in your direction.

With ever more complex patterns to overcome and a faster and faster rate of play, the simple “push space to flip” mechanic might only be one button but will eventually build to challenge even the fastest of reflexes. You will die again, and again, and again

! and again, and again, and again, and again, and again; but unlike some other punishing titles of similar ilk, the deaths here don’t tend to feel cheap. You’ll always know why you died, and what you need to do to avoid death next time.

Too frustrating to be much fun. I do like the deceptively-simple concept and the wobbly-screen mode you can unlock each time you clear a level… but the overall charm wears off very quickly. It doesn’t take long for things to start to feel mindless, and this is not the kind of game where mindless gameplay will get you anywhere.

I’m surprised at the glowing reviews this game has gotten. (And of course anyone who doesn’t recommend the game gets slammed with downvotes, I’m sure I’ll be no different.) Scrolling through the positive reviews, hardly any of the users seem to have played for more than a couple hours - probably because the ragequit is strong with this one; I imagine many of these people played it once and haven’t touched it since - so again, it’s tough to understand the positive feedback. For the novelty, sure. Everything else… hm.

Lost Wing

Lost Wing

Really fun game. I am looking forward to seeing where the dev’s take it throughout the EA. I will update my review as time goes on (below). For now theres the 1, rather long, zone thats fully functional. A second zone looks to be just about ready, and is available for preview (meaning theres no collision, but you can run through it).

Whats available is awesome. Ship control feels good, speed feels good, pickups feel good, and the challenge is most certainly there. The soundtrack suits the game nicely and the graphics are as you see in the screenshots (crisp and spiffy). I totally recommend, especially at this price.

A very difficult game to evaluate, especially considering the peculiarities of the whole puzzle genre, once exalted by the legendary game Myst. It should be said right away that the game was beaten on hardcore difficulty mode (without prompts and with complicated puzzles), so it is quite possible that some things that I strongly disliked on normal difficulty are perceived quite adequately. As the successor to the popular Schizm series, the game quite rightly knows what it will be played for. Puzzles. A large number of puzzles. And this is in abundance here, we will return to their detailed analysis a little later, for now, let’s just say that almost everyone will have to make a huge amount of effort to solve, sometimes justified, but sometimes not so much.

Foreword:

While I didn’t recommend it at first I now completed a playthrough on “hard” difficulty. There were a few puzzles actually made me think for more than an hour. Pressing buttons at random isn’t my playstyle so I think first and bring my thoughts to paper. Once written down I try to translate my notes into actions.

Succeeding that way is the best achievement for me and is what I want when i play. I really like the design choice as it reminds me of some puzzle games I’ve already played.

This game bring to us a new thing that i really loved

Now we can use our unconscious competence in a game mode with just 5s to act

So we can practice and learn without timer and put our brain in a tough test and see if our learnings are really deeply embedded

Great Game!!!

This game is so much better than the first one! The stellar archive is very cool and the soundtrack is awesome! The new time mechanic is no joke, you need to think fast, but the freeze time and swap commands help you get through it. The new options of hexgrids changed everything and the hardcore mode is for pros, but the classic, soothing mode is there too for the oldschoolers. Congratulations Nukearts! Keep up the good job!
