Crysis 2 - Maximum Edition

Crysis 2 - Maximum Edition

This isn’t a war ordinary humans can win! This is the future!

I still remember being very hyped after watching Crysis 2 trailers and promotional material. I was all in when Crytek decided to expand the series outside the Lingshan islands we last saw in the original Crysis and its spinoff Warhead. I’m going to be as honest and unbiased with you guys as possible. Despite being a huge fan of the series as whole, I wasn’t very impressed with the sequel. It almost felt like developer Crytek was trying to make a much bigger and ambitious sequel to an already great phenomenon.

Action packed and beautiful to look at, but too linear for its own good.

Crysis 2 was developed by Crytek Studios and released by Electronic Arts in March 2011. Four yours earlier, the same developers scored a huge success with the first game in the series, which was well-known at its time of release to be the most demanding pc game ever made. But apart from being a technical masterpiece, pushing graphics to a lever far beyond anything which had been yet achieved, the original Crysis also offered good gunplay in a fairly big theater of operations. While not being without some problems, the game impressed me and so I started playing Crysis 2 with high expectations.

Crysis Warhead®

Crysis Warhead®

Because Spelling Crysis normally isnt cool enough…

This game is a Strong standalone expansion to the original Crysis game which was released on September 2008. Warhead follows a plot that happens during the original story of the first game and explains lots of things from the first game! You follow a Tough as Nails englishman Nicknamed “Pyscho” and he has a very interesting story to tell, although a short one!

Warhead features a clearly optimized version of the Cry Engine 2, with 720p graphics (good for the time.) with lots of settings to choose from. Lots of Mods are also avaliable for people who want current graphics and extra options. (Shooting chickens instead of bullets, infinite energy and custom enemy skins are my favourites.)

Crysis Warhead is a first person shooter, and is a standalone expansion top the original Crysis game. This was released in September 2008.

Warhead follows a side plot to the original story of “Psycho”, an ally of the original protagonist, Nomad. You are thrown into challenges on the other side of the island at the same time as the original story. One change with the gameplay that Warhead brings, is the chance to customize your weapons, allowing you to put silencers, different sights on, and other additions such as flashlights. All of the weaponry which was in the first game is still present here, with the addition of a few new guns such as dual wielding SMGs which are absolutely bad-ass. We see the return of the super human style nanosuit too.

Half-Life 2: Lost Coast

Half-Life 2: Lost Coast

Half-Life 2: Lost Coast is some kind of show-case made by Valve to introduce their new High Dynamic Range method of applying light inside the Source Engine. Actually, although this is a very technical subject, the developer’s commentary that comes with it, is more than worthwhile listening to. It gives quite some insight into how this mini-level was constructed, and even into how HDR lighting actually works. It’s not easy to talk about something as complex as this is an easily understandable manner. Fascinating stuff, and for the die-hard Vavle-fans: you even get Gabe Newell’s words at the beginning of the commentary ;-).

After playing around with the level for a bit, I can definitely say that Lost Coast is a complete success. It’s not available seperately, but it is available in the Half Life Complete Pack (which is on sale right now). Here, you play as Gordon Freeman, as you come across the tiny town of St. Olga, whom is under attack by the Combine with a gun that launches headcrabs into the town. The 14-Minute Tech Demo shows off what the Source engine can really do, and as a result the game looks beautiful. It’s almost like a work of art.
