Undertale

Undertale

This was one of my first indie games, and it absolutely hooked me in. Even if you go into it having watched a playthrough of the game (although I would highly recommend going into it blind), it has a lot to offer. There is so much to uncover on your own, the music does a fantastic job of immersing you into the experience, and the random events that can occur will make every playthrough entirely unique to the player. I will probably never play one half of the game

! (specifically the genocide route, both because I don’t have the skill level and I can’t kill the characters I love), but I still return to it from time to time because of how much I love the characters and the world. The writing and the gameplay never clash, both play off of each other and have the same core values. It never feels like a part of the game is removed, it is one cohesive masterpiece and everyone should experience it for themselves at least once.

Undertale, like most games, is unfortunately not for everyone. Though if Undertale clicks with you, it really clicks. Personally, I find myself unable to stop thinking about this game for the rest of the day if it’s even mentioned to me offhandedly.

Undertale is a deconstruction of the RPG genre that does not sacrifice gameplay in the process. Instead of selecting attacks from a menu à la Final Fantasy, you’ll often find yourself treating every encounter like a small puzzle. It becomes a satisfying process to learn each enemy’s solution as you progress.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Just a note, I recieved a beta key, but I have bought this game for friends who also wanted it.

I played a ton of the free beta for this game (a couple hundred hours) and helped out on the discord a lot, so I think I have a pretty good idea on what makes this game good. It’s an RPG that’s fairly lighthearted that makes fun of things like how the player tends to be a kleptomaniac stealing everything not tied down translating to the characters being kleptomaniacs. Unlike previous entries though the characters actually are more than just caricatures and act closer to real people as well as being funny parodies of stereotypes.

The Epic Battle Fantasy series has been a childhood pastime of mine ever since I discovered EBF 3 on Kongregate. From the humorous dialogue, to the many hidden secrets, to the intense strategy required for epic mode, this game was a heck of a ride and probably Roszak’s best game yet.

The story was definitely a step up from previous EBF games. The dialogue and flavor text was as hilarious as ever, with my favorite line being from a report in den of a conspiracy theorists referencing Alex Jones’s “turning the frogs gay” comment. I really enjoyed the arc with

! Lance as the main villain, since his regime provided an urgent threat and a mini-climax of the story earlier on in the game rather than only building up to the climax at the very end. I also enjoyed Matt’s occasional fourth-wall breaking since it fleshed out his character in comparison to his dumb muscle portrayal in previous games. I also found that part near the end where the people you did quests for come to help and encourage the party very heartwarming, The last phase of the final boss fight

! where the Devourer deletes the world, becomes an epic race against time that was really enjoyable.

STONE

STONE

STONE:

It happens to every single one of us - you know that time when you wake up with a pounding head that was self-inflicted by rather strong beverages from the previous night - the feeling of having a few lead balls bouncing all around inside your skull when you move around. The worst is when people start talking to you . . . then you have the amazing combination of bouncing balls and echoing voices within your cranial cavity! Not a pleasant feeling, to say the least. This is exactly what happens to a Koala detective named STONE, but on top of that, he receives a phone call from an unknown number telling him that his partner, Alex, has been kidnapped!

I enjoyed Stone overall.

It's definitely in the stoner noir genre, with a protagonist who unexpectedly finds himself at the center of a mystery. The story progresses in a fairly linear manner, albeit with some interesting trips, twists, and turns. The story is neatly divided into acts, with some nicely done mood-setting musical interludes between. References to movies like The Big Lebowski are peppered throughout. There's also an epilogue that really ties the game together.

The visual style of the game is quite interesting and fun. The characters are detailed in a thoughtful way, and the voice acting is great. Your dialogue choices as Stone don't really alter the way the story plays out, but they can change your perception of Stone and his relationships with other characters, so it's rewarding to try different tacts and see what happens.

## BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre

This is an enjoyable shooter chock full of rudeness, lewdness and dudeness. Definitely not for all audiences.

We play as Lou, the son of Satan and join him on his quest to reclaim Hell from the hordes of humans who have come for all the debauched pleasures on offer. Mostly these pleasures are fast food and sex. In order to save Hell from the invaders, Lou takes an arsenal of weaponry and blasts everything that moves into little tiny human or demon chunks.

The most obvious talking point of the game is it's 18 rated content. There is a bevy of booze, drugs, rock n' roll and sexual references that definitely aren't for all ages. A downloadable content patch removes censorship, but if you are easily offended, the game is not designed for you anyway and really having censorship is a moot point. Playing as the son of Satan, we shouldn't be expecting a saintly protagonist. You will be shooting loads, in more ways than one.

For many players, the genre "twin-stick shooter" is a synonym for difficult games that mix fast-paced, long-range attacks, close-range mobs, and giant bosses with tons of health. BDSM is definitely a twin-stick shooter, but I wouldn't say that this game is difficult. That's because there are plenty of ways to abuse the combat system, in addition to a special ability called rage; (filled by defeating foes), that gives invulnerability and a lethal laser that overkills ANY enemy! It fits the game's lore, but it's unfair to the mechanics of the genre. You'll never need to worry about ammunition, either: Almost everything in the environment is destructible. And since there's a default weapon with infinite ammo, you're covered even if you run out.

## CPU Invaders

### CPU Invaders

**What The Game Is About**

CPU Invaders is a simple game about you, a blue CPU Defender, holding off multiple types of CPU Invaders. It is a type of "shoot-em-up" style of games that are a great way to spend time if you're bored or something to do while you're waiting for your friends.

**Gameplay**

You run around using WASD and shoot using LMB. There is no support for multiplayer, sadly, because the game would be more fun to play if you could play with friends. It does have achievements, but not insane easter egg achievements, just basic achievements like beating level 1 or 7 and killing 300 CPU Invaders. When you play it, it has a transparent background, allowing you to see behind the game, which is cool.

A Shoot’em up game that takes place on a desktop. The title defines this game nicely, along with the character we play as. Our only goal is to destroy the invaders that spawn on the screen, and we can simply do so with the mouse key, and maneuver with the WASD keys. I find the objective of the game too simplistic though. Even with the levels being harder than the previous, it still doesn’t show much evolution in terms of our character’s ability. The overall difficulty is also average: Spray’n pray will get you through most of the levels but the last one.

## Katamari Damacy REROLL

### This is a public service announcement.

You may have noticed a highly voted negative review claiming that the game is unplayable without a controller due to a lack of key mappings.

This is not the case. The game does work with a keyboard - I have completed the entire game playing this way.

The problem is not with the key bindings but with how they are explained. I made the same mistake as the other poster when I first started playing but once you know how to use the keyboard it's actually quite intuitive.

I'ma split this into two reviews. One for people who played Katamari Damacy on PS2, the other for people who have never played it.

PS2 players: Hello. I too am old. This is in almost every respect the Katamari you remember. Except the visuals come in higher resolution (no pixels!) and everything loads quicker. There have been complaints that the game only runs in windowed mode until you've cleared the tutorial. Yup. True. After that you get access to the settings from Home Planet in the same way you accessed them on your PS2\. This bothered me not at all. If you think it might bother you, you'll want to take that into consideration. There have also been complaints that the game didn't recognize controller input during the tutorial. No idea. Mine worked just fine with no configuration. Also, the story scenes involving the Hoshino family are presented in Japanese with subtitles, rather than the NSTC PS2 release's divertingly weird English dub.
