Gems of War - Puzzle RPG

Gems of War - Puzzle RPG

Recommended, it is a very good game well supported by the developers. Game updates frequently and bugs are glitches are fixed rapidly. Very nice casual puzzle game with lots of variety. You can play it on Steam with PC and you can also play the same account on a smart phone, either Android or iOS.

The battles are completely random after a certain point and this makes some people like it while others hate it. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with random, it is just … well, random. Deal with it and try to have fun, is all you can do. In most cases you win, sometimes you lose. Is there anybody who always wins in blackjack or poker? No, obviously not, you’ve got to lose occasionally. Do you get mad when you lose? Sure. Does it make you stop playing? No, not really. So, just get over it. There are some bad boards when you will lose no matter what you do. The main idea is to minimize these instances. Which is achieved through strategic development of your kingdoms, the cards, various stones that give the cards certain powers and through your guild.

I have played “Puzzle Quest” as handheld for hours, and still consider it as one of the best Match-3-games - mainly because it combines RPG-Elements with Match-3. Afterwards, however, I was spoilt for any other Match-3-game, such as “Bejeweled”, because they all were…yeah.. boring.

Then I stumbled over “Gems of War.” And while the “story”-mode is not as good as at it was with “Puzzle Quest”, “questing” in “Gems of War” is an enjoyable thing so far, too.

“Gems of War” is free to play - but (of course) you can spend a lot of money for in-game purchases. If you have played “Puzzle Quest” then you remember that your character could use spells (what in most other games are “Power Ups”). In “Gems of War” you technically “recruit” units, represented by cards. Oh boy, the cards are a chapter on its own. Aside from the fact that each card can be levelled up by using “Souls”, you can improve the rarity (if you have e.g. 6 “white” cards of the same type you can sacrifice 5, to get a card of the same type, but with a “green” rarity), rarity also influences how “high” the card can level, and then there are 3 unlockable “passives” for each card which use certain gems which drop in game.

It might not be a pay to win, but it’s a pay to play. You must spend energy to play a puzzle. You have limited energy and it accumulates at 1 per 3 minutes or so. As the puzzles get harder they cost more energy. In order to refil energy you need crystals that you get when leveling. You must do a bunch of puzzles for a level and the crystals you get are few, not really enough to play more than a game, two at the beginning. So… you must buy crystals with actual money or not play the game other than for a few minutes every couple of hours. I like to play games when I want to. I don’t want to only be able to play for a few minutes and then be locked out. I’ve played a lot of microtransaction games and this one bites. Spending money for items to help prevent you from replaying games over and over again because of bad chance at loading is one thing. This is another. The ad at the loading screen, the inability to play when you want or for how long you want, the puzzles that you really have to redo over and over again for completion, let alone perfect score, means it’s just a money suck. Skip it. Not even worth $5 if you could get rid of all the microtransactions, ads, and requests for you to buy their overpriced crystals.

Everything about this game tries to annoy you into not-so-micropayments. You have an energy bar that is depleted by playing match-3 games; the higher your player and energy level, the more expensive the levels become. This way you can only play a few matches every few hours. Half (or more) of the matches are so unfair that you don’t even come close to finishing them. (I’ve played many match-3 games and this was the most annoying one.)

You receive items by fighting animals with items on the overview map, completing item collections and finishing quests. The quests become especially tedious later in the game, where you have to successfully complete level A 5 times, but to even attempt A once you need item 1, which you can only get in level B for which you need item 2, which you can only get from animal character C for which you need item 3, which you can only get from level D. Pair this with the fact that you’ll be able to complete at most half of the attempts (sometimes more like 1/5) and you usually only get the items you need from every 2nd win, you need literally tens to hundreds of matches to complete them.

Matchville - Match 3 Puzzle

This game is fun and very challenging. The only problem is the points you earn inside the game disappear when you try to “buy” a horseshoe or some other power booster icon. I keep getting a error message saying purchase could not be made. So that means you cannot get any extra help from in game purchases using the points that you earn. That makes this game really frustrating and near impossible to get past each level. Other than that, the game is fun.

I “finished” the game … with a promise from the game that the story will continue.

It has now been 9 months since then, nothing. Well worth it to play if you like match games, I got about 17 hours out of it. But if you’re looking for one of those “endless” games, this is not for you. It doesnt even HAVE a ending

Puzzle Plunder

Puzzle Plunder

This pirate-themed game is colouful, fun, and above all - addictive. You have to gather buckets to bail out your ever sinking pirate ship, all whilst gathering swords, rum, and gold in the usual match 3 setting. You can spend your plunder on special bonuses for your pirate ship, and loot drops unlock increasing levels of abilities such as increasing the value of your loot or the efficiency of your bailing crews.

The interface has that stained treasure map feel, along with brightly coloured icons which make the game really pop. Click response is good, and the multiple combos give you a moment to regain your compsure before the action starts again. The soundtrack music is just divine and smoother than a mannequin.

Simple match 3 game. It’s a bit slow in response. Made on the cheap by i hope a beginner game dev. As part of a simple match 3 game you would expect a mechanic to be there to ensure you don’t fail your game due to the board having no possible matches on it. The dev’s solution to this is a button to manually end your run instead of waiting a few seconds of being unable to do anything until your game is over (you have to match buckets to reduce water in your boat, once the bar is full you sink/lose)

Doodle God: Mighty Trio

Doodle God: Mighty Trio

I really like the game but it needs a better explanation of the moves or like a menu you can pull up describing the moves. You forget what some of them are the longer you play but also some of the moves dont work the way you would think they should. For example in level 82 it says “combine bonuses under finger to progress the level goal” and it has a highlighted move for you to try and show you how it’s done. The highlighted move is 3 elements in a straight scross line but 2 of them are glowing with this symbol + you connect them and it counts for the + move and then your level starts. Everytime I have tried to replicate that it does nothing which is so frusterating!!!! I have tried it the exact way even on top of rocks like in the example and it does not count as the move!!!! It makes no sense. The only way I am able to get those moves done is by total accident and it asks you to complete that move in multiple levels and multiple times per level and I can’t get past the levels with that move unless it accidently happens when other things around the area are exploding. I don’t know if it is a glitch or if I’m doing wrong and just don’t know because there’s nothing for me to go off of except the one litle example that doesn’t show you much. If it’s not a glitch hen there should be a way to EXPLAIN the moves in more detail in a move menu or something you can pull up that describes it with words so you can understand it better because it is very frusterating to do what it shows a ton of times and it not count. or even just make it so you can click on the move you don’t understand or remember in the left panel and a description of that move pops up on screen for you.

So i’ve been playing for 4+ hours and i can say between some loading time or waiting queue, this game has been made to make you do something while waiting on another game.. Or sometime you can just launch this game and if you are into it you will forget to get some sleep :D

Pros :

Beautiful

Can be a bit difficult (and i like it so far)

Unlimited Life (Don’t know if its intended or a bug)

Alchemy who require some logic. (How to make some Elements (like Sun, life, lava etc etc))

Cons :

The Roulette Wheel (Maybe not a cons but the bonus are too low at the moment but 1 try is free for every level so you can use it if you want)

Legend of Numbers

Legend of Numbers

I’ve finished getting 3 stars in all levels, so I have quite a few things to say -

Legend of Numbers is a very nice PUZZLE game built on a match-3 basis, and I very much recommend it.

Importantly, it is not pay2win at all.

You can purchase in-game items that make the puzzles a bit easier or wait less for your “lives” to replenish, but the game and all levels are entirely open and doable without paying.

Who will like it :

Problem solvers / challenge lovers / match-3 fans

Skills needed (by importance) :

Real player with 74.4 hrs in game

Pros:

Challenging match-3 game with elements of strategy which provided by ‘pure’ numbers.

Complexity grow slowly from level to level and stops exactly when levels become hard enough to provide challenge.

If you like to spend quite a time only to solve one level this game can provide it after some number of introduction levels.

Cons:

Some timed levels can be too challenging because of very short time given.

Game needs 30 or 60 fps lock, ‘cause now it running at 500+ fps, which is not needed for this type of game and wasting sources for nothing.

Force of Elements

Force of Elements

This game was really good - even with the simple system to match gems/colors like so many games besides Force of Elements have… with the skills and the tricks to maybe make a weak move to prevent enemy to get a even better one in the next turn it was a often fun and you needed to be clever.

Then the patch came - Sparky went to be announced and implemented and now the game is rigged. Why ? Sparky is hard to beat, its a OP-character: He has a normal skill which gives the opponent 2 turns less out of 5 in unranked mode (40%!) or 3 seconds less (30%) in ranked mode, here are 10 seconds per turn. This skill is overhelmded OP because you can cast it every turn - I lose 80% of my games to Sparky and also I win 80% of my games when I use Sparky.

Keep Coming Back For More

A very enjoyable Match-3 game with single-player and verus modes, Force Of Elements is addictive. Some people compare it–for better or worse–to a mélange of Candy Crush and Bejeweled. I honestly can’t say because all Match-3 games are so similiar it’s impossible to determine who’s impersonating whom.

So what does Force of Elements have going for it?

  • It’s free. Which is absolutely awesome.

  • Pretty accurate and speedy matching system in versus mode

Battle for Blood - Epic battles within 30 seconds!

Battle for Blood - Epic battles within 30 seconds!

While this is not the most amazing game I have ever played, it is a fun match 3 combat game. The main reason I felt compelled to write the review is from reading the negative comments about the game that had been written by people who clearly did not actually play the game long enough to be fair about evaluating it.

This is a free game that DOES NOT REQUIRE MONEY TO WIN. You just need some patience to farm the coins you need to pay for things. Here is why I say this: The only thing you can buy in the game is coins and lives. There is NOTHING you can buy that you cannot earn. All units and “items” are unlocked just by playing. EVERY level you play will earn you coins. So, if you have time and patience and upgrade the right units as you go, you have to spend NOTHING to progress. I even saw some people claiming that upgrading your items with coins was “hidden” to get you to spend money. FYI, there is only one way to upgrade anything: coins. So, you cannot do the upgrades even with money without finding that “hidden” screen. Also the “hidden” screen is just another tab on the upgrade screen.

MARVEL Puzzle Quest

MARVEL Puzzle Quest

If you like Match 3 games, you will adore this one! Marvel Puzzle Quest really is the best I have ever played. If you are not into Match 3, I think you should still give this one a try, as it might just change your mind.

While the micro-transactions do make for a pay-to-win situation, you can still get there through ordinary grinding.

Highly recommended.

I’ve enjoyed this game and didn’t mind making in game purchases early on.

I had the account wiped after a patch once. I contacted customer service about it and they fixed it in 1 day.

It always runs smoothly on my PC.

I guess it is slow at first but after 2 years, I’ve got a great roster and many of my heros are maxxed so I can play as long as I want and don’t ever see the need to make another in game purchase.
