Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop

Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop

Reactive Drop

The sequel of Alien Swarm, an top-down cooperative shooter released by Valve back in the days.

History

Alien Swarm originates from an unreal tournament mod back in the days and was acquired and re-released by Valve in 2010. This game combined elements from survival games like shadowgrounds and left for dead. For a free game, it had a good presentation, nice gameplay and good graphics. It only lacked two things: content and community.

The gameplay

Like Alien Swarm, Reactive Drop is a cooperative top down shooter. The player plays with other marines against hordes of aliens, in order to complete different objectives. In the game, there are 4 different classes to play, each one consisting of two characters with different statistics including some class restricted weapons.

Friendly Fire is anything but friendly, medics are flavour and death, death do be part of the game. Try to keep up with your team and defend when necessary, picking a firing line and keeping it will increase everyone’s chances of survival. That said, in general, the game is Chaos.

People can and do play solo, but these are usually awe inspiring ASBI players. For the rest of us, team play is integral and trust is key. Communication in game is vital and facilitated in-game with voice communication, a text chat feature and a radial menu for quick communication emotes. Although after a few rounds, you’ll learn to read other players marine placements and apply your own work around tactics of support. The community is active and full of modders aiming to enhance your bug hunt with custom challenges, HUD’s, skins, sounds and levels. Additionally, there are dedicated servers from all around the globe, providing a place for you to meet new and interesting marines, in your fight against the swarm.

Lovely Asteroids update, but as a lifelong Asteroids fan I do have some criticisms.

1. The turn movement is way too slow.

2. Adding reverse thrust has made the game way too easy.

3. The mothership cutscene between each level slows the pace of the game down.

4. Would be nice to have a vector-graphic retro look as an switchable option.

Other than those four gripes, not bad. I like the fact you can play with up to 4 players.

A Fun short game. Original Ideas. My son and I enjoyed the team work aspect and the game over all. Our only complaint was that it was too short!

Fruity Smootie - A Local Co-op game with puzzle-solving levels perfectly fit for anyone who just wants to vibe with a cute, funny game. Best of all, it costs nothing and will give you a moment of entertainment in these weird times!

Such a “punny” game, with nice humor and interesting mechanics. Advisable to play with two people, as most levels are doable going at it solo… But that’s if you’re that kind of masochist I guess. (But that’s why it’s even better with 2 people! But still highly enjoyable going at it solo).

If you’re looking for a horror game, you’ve come to the right place.

I have been traumatized repeatedly by this game. I tried to play it with my little sister, age 9 at the time, and she is currently still in the ICU for brain fever. She hasn’t woken up since that time two years ago. The tomato… The banana, that’s all I hear. Every day I am reminded of the horrors of this game, no, demon, that has produced both my PTSD and depression.

I am now an adult, raising a family. Every time I send my kids off to school, I think of the blender. Dear god. I haven’t eaten an orange or apple for the past two years. In fact, I can’t even remember eating a fruit since last year. My hair is falling out, my left arm grew black last Sunday from vitamin A and B deficiency. I’ll soon be joining my sister in the ICU, and for that matter, hell, because this game was a sin on god’s abandoned Earth.

SYNTHETIK: Arena

SYNTHETIK: Arena

Synthetik: Legion Rising is an extremely addicting game that I highly recommend if you like sci-fi, arcade-style shooters and online co-op.

Not sure if you want to try it? This game is basically a free “reduced” version of it. Not as addictive, but still amazingly fun. Even though i bought the main game, i still occasionally play this for a bit. Your progress is even shared between the two games!

The main game has one long gamemode that can last up to 30-60 min on average, but this game has 5 arcade-style game modes that only go up to maybe 10-30 min. But that’s if you don’t die, any run can end in literally a minute if you’re reckless at the start. This game is hard, but there is a very unique difficulty customization system.

As someone who found about about this series from this Arena game type, I can honestly say it’s compelled me to get involved. I’ve joined their dsicord, pestered multiple friends into getting it, and have had tons of fun.

Now for the review:

The TL;DR is that is has mechanics that are new. The reloading, difficulty based on what modifiers you select (sort of like halo skulls) and classes and game types. Each class is viable and combinations can come up with some crazy stuff. Top-Down, player leveling but run based rogue-like. You earn passive upgrades but each run is different. It’s free, worth a try, and it has a high skill floor with low learning curve at first.

Tales of Escape

Tales of Escape

Tales of Escape is a decent game. The graphics are ok, some textures look pretty bad though. Some things can be a bit silly, looking at you handless skeleton. It controls well with keyboard and mouse and with the Htc Vive.

Speaking about the Vive, Vr is fun and probably the best way to play the game. I got a bit motion sick after playing it but that might just be me. You can also phase through objects which is fun.

If you’re going to play this game get a friend. Playing with a friend is really fun when you’re trying to be scared but you just keep cracking jokes.

Overall Rating: 2/5

Gameplay: 2/5

The game is pretty fun to start with although the puzzles become somewhat tedious after a while. A number of them don’t really make a lot of sense and lack a satisfying conclusion. I’d expect to need to look up some hints here and there! The free to play room was good, moreso with a group of friends to play with. Can’t really complain too much considering it’s free.

Illusion (one of the DLC escape rooms) was good fun - me and my friends have played through it a couple of times. Unfortunately both Sleepy Hollow and Cold As Ice were disappointing and paled in comparison to Illusion. If you’re considering buying any of the DLCs, I’d go for Illusion and steer clear of the others.

Cry of Fear

Cry of Fear

If you want terrifying jumpscares, paranoia at every step, and pure horror, then this game is for you.

Be careful, though, because this game deals with heavy subjects like suicide, depression, and self-harm. If these kinds of topics can make you upset or unstable, do not play this game.

Pros and Cons

Story/Character Pros:

-Terrifying game

-Simon’s a badass

-There’s guns and knives and sh*t

-Hallucinations/nightmare sequences are amazingly built and scary as hell

-Story has some deep sh*t, and the game depicts depression and mental illness well

Cry of Fear is simply the best Half-Life mod I have ever played, with the exception of Counter-Strike back in the day. This game shouldn’t even be classified as a mod in my opinion. The engine has been utilized so well that there is little resemblence to the look of Half-Life.

Story:

The story of Cry of Fear is worth experiencing for sure. I like the mystery aspects to the story and your character’s journey in figuring out what’s going on. There are many WTF moments, which I like in survival horror games. Plus, there are mutliple endings, so the replay value is decent. I don’t want to give anything away, so you willl have to check it out yourself. Definitely plays with the mind and is more of a psychological horror thriller than a straight up jump scare horror game, which in my opinion makes for a much more interesting experience.

Very cute co-op puzzle platformer. Great fun without frustratingly difficult puzzles, yet complex enough to give you pause.

The alternate dimension aspect of it is really neat, I like the concept of it a lot.

My co-op partner and I ended up swapping sides each level to see where we could/couldn’t go, and then worked our way around the level from there.

I liked having to communicate so we could move in unison to finish some of the puzzles.

Great concept, great game. Highly recommend it.

Such a charming little game, hearkening back to the old days of playing fun co op flash games with your friends in the school computer lab. A very clever puzzle mechanic that is utilized very well. Me and my girlfriend have been looking for games to play together online since we live long distance, and this little free game proved to be very fulfilling for us on our video call play sessions. Kudos to the developer, and thank you for releasing this for free.

Game is still clearly in early stages, but that doesn’t take away from how addicting it is. I’m pleasantly surprised with how much fun I had playing this cute little indie tower defense. I played with a friend, and we were both attached the entire time. It’s a cool game and sometimes a hilariously good time. If you are looking for something to burn a bit of time with a friend, this game is great for that. Not to mention it’s free and doesn’t take up much hard drive space, so there really isn’t any downside. The game has some clear flaws, but for me personally, it never detracted from the addicting nature of the game. The goofy mechanics sometimes added even more fun and hilarity into the equation.

A simple but very fun game that can be really challenging until you figure out how to play the game well enough to survive the encounters once you get it figured out though you can seemingly go as far as you want with little difficulty would love to see this taken further with an xp system for new towers/abilities for the characters and maybe more types of enemies but a great start and definitely worth a play if you like coop tower defenses! my play through here: https://youtu.be/UH9PAqSsCWA
