Remember when games used to be insanely difficult and you’d end up getting stuck on a level for days until you eventually beat it and felt like a god for a straight week?

Well Arkos reminds me of that, not just because of its unforgiving approach to difficulty and level design where it often just tosses you head first into the deep end of a lava filled room, but also in the way it looks and sounds, because it’s intended in every way to be a modernized recreation of classic FPS games like DOOM and Heretic, mixed with modern voxel based physics, destructible environments and a custom soundtrack that’s easily worthy of the greats.

Arkos plays just like the old shooters with more colorful setting and destructible environment. It’s a shame it offers just a little delicious slice instead of serving the whole cake.

It’s a good thing you don’t play these games for the story because there isn’t much of one here. The Wanderer, the game’s protagonist, must collect ancient weapons and overcome dungeon guardians. This is the only info you’ll acquire, save from a single scroll with a few phrases at the start of each world.

Yes there are zombies, but you’ll probably die of thirst.

This was terrible. No ammo to be found, the survival meters go down so so quickly. Shooting zombies feels underwhelming. Overall, very boring and just awful.

Amazing game and can not wait to see where it goes!

TL;DR - Skip down to “THE VERDICT”

Anyone who has ever played or seen a video about Minecraft, can probably identify this as “Sky Block”. I went into it mad that they are trying to cash in on, not only another Minecraft clone, but a paid version of a free minigame someone created withing Minecraft. While I am still upset at the idea, you have to remember that the only way to play Sky Block is to own a copy of Minecraft, or at least install and get into the map.

SkyLife however is a variant of Sky Block that runs on its own, and with (somewhat) higher quality graphics. It’s the Unity engine instead of Java, however the quality of the textures are really bad. Using an engine capable of textures greater than 16x16 should be using hi-res graphics and models. Just look at Eco and Creativerse as examples.

Fractal Block World

I like this because it reminds me of Interphase which was technically the first ever FPS, exploration is fun and can be relaxing and at other times tense, I want to see more!

This is a unique game! It’s fun to shrink many times and explore the forests. The mazes were fun, and the 7x7x7 one was challenging. Definitely recommended for players who enjoy exploration.

Block Survival: Legend of the Lost Islands

Block Survival: Legend of the Lost Islands

THIS IS NOT A MINECRAFT!

The music on this game really nice, looping through the level fine when engaging battles against enemies AIs. The gameplay needs improvement on the controls sometimes the input is either delay or not readable at all from the controller.

  • My biggest concern the actual camera, I got heavy dizziness while playing this game, perhaps the FOV is a bit weird and the shaders applied with distrortion of RGB dissplacement doesn’t help much either.

  • UI also needs some improvement sometimes is hard to read what sort of questline should I be taking, and seen so many pop ups at the screen becomes hard at times. Game Feel was ok some interesting and funny moments can be found in this game.

I was impressed with the gameplay like already after 2min.

I want/ I WIll finish this adventure.

And thats whats a good game is to me.

Edit 1:

Happily just finished the game after 11.5 hours

And?

This game is so good; never a dull moment in the entire game; BRAVO game developers, Bravo indeed.

Next I will go for a 2nd run of the game to get the last achivement.

Definently one of the contenders for GOTY for me personally.

This was pure gaming PLEASURE.

Bravo:

Edit 2;

New game + was almost even better then the first time around due to the fact one then knows where to go and one “speed rush thru the stages”

**Edit: Do not buy this game in 2016 and above due to the fact the game is discontuined sadly. This is just a 2014 review, but this last edit is to DEVELOPER’S ARE ENTIRELY GONE.

I am putting a negative review dispite good game due to… As a warning to play this game, maybe play the xbox 360 version of the game possibly, but then again. If on PC go to Blockstorm’s community or wait till 2019. I will say. This game was absolutely fun when it lasted, but died too early.

The Voxel FPS Genre sadly is dead, but when I look back on this game. They should reduce the price of this game. Including being less strict about the block moderation.**

I’ve been playing this game since before the steam release, ive created some of the first player made guns in the game and have grown attach. When i first started sure it had its rough spots, but it fun and very competitive. Now its one of my most favorite games. Still working through a few kinks here and there but every game has them. Those who put it down because of minecraft need to think again. Minecraft was inspired from Infiniminer, and Guncraft from minecraft. You also must understand its a very different game. Instead of mining you blow peoples heads off on custom made maps, with custom made guns for a limited amount of time. Your on a battlefield like Halo, CoD, StarWars Battlefront, 007 Golden eye. The population maybe a little low right now but i see it growing in the future. I want to thank you if you read this and i shall see you on the blocky battlefield. ;)

Revulsion

Revulsion

Boring, characterless, ugly and often annoying enemies. Similarly characterless maps. Pointless gimmicky voxel art design. Depressing tuneless ambient music and/or depressing generic “heavy” rock, depending on the area.

The shooting’s decent but any potential is smudged by the drab setting and the painfully amorphous enemies.

So, you have your map, which you traverse gaily and while double jumping merrily on your way, you set off switches, grab spawn triggering objectives, funnel enemies into choke points and roller bomb the poo out of them. This is doctor jekyll.

Real player with 340.4 hrs in game

Revulsion is a blocky homage to old school shooters like Doom, where the story is “Here’s a gun, go kill things”, and the levels are big and easy to navigate. The environments are bright, the style is fun, and the sound effects really pop from the speakers to let you know what’s going on.

I played this game when it was very early Alpha and absolutely LOVED it. Then, everything changed because the dev thought it was too easy. The difficulty became brutal, and the gameplay became hugely unbalanced and very repetitive. The novel unusual levels of the early alpha became warrens of grey metal, and I stopped playing it for almost two years. I came back to it periodically, would start a new game, but always ended up battering my head off an unkillable baddie, and left it again.
