Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon®

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon®

This game is still my favorite hardcore tactical shooter. Nothing has come close to beating it, not even ARMA. Yes, ARMA may have some extra gadgets and a few extra bits of immersion, but GR just has the soul it needs to keep it realistic yet fun and not overly realistic to where you might as well push a button to tie your boots. A recommendation right of the bat before I get to the review: The Heroes Unleashed mod really completes the package and definitely makes it close to real. If you do get this game, definitely download it.

TL;DR Go to last paragraph.

When I was about seven I was introduced to this game when my mom would play it while my dad was at work. I’d watch and sort of engross myself in the experience with her as she explained her meticulous point selection and how Jacob and Cohen were the best of the game due to their insane amount of grenade launcher ammo.

Originally I picked up this game for the nostalgia of playing through it and I’m in similar circumstances right now where there’s a large amount of time I have to myself at the moment. I know it won’t be forever, but I’ll explain some of the mechanics that I like about this game and what you need to do to enjoy it.

Rainbow Six in 2005:

-3 single-player campaigns totaling 30 missions, and they get better as you go. Athena Sword builds on Ravenshield, and Iron Wrath (make sure to download and install, super easy) is the pinnacle, the missions are brutal and the maps look stunning. This is definitely a pre-DLC era game.

-Game is set within the Tom Clancy universe and builds upon the formula from the previous Rainbow Six entries

Realistic and fun!

  • graphics still look good
  • HUD and scope stretch on anything not 4:3!

  • no aiming down iron sights (Project VI is unreleased, RavenShield 2.0 is not animated))

  • things can clip through walls (bodies, smoke…)

  • AI is good (spawns somewhat randomly, uses grenades, kills hostages, surrenders, moves around)
  • AI threats give themselves away by talking/shouting whenever they detect enemies

GOOD POTENTIAL… AND THAT’S IT!

This game had been heavily touted as a “Battlefield Killer” in the past, but the only thing it managed to kill was itself. And it’s now going Free to Play in one of the worst platforms there is. And they’re asking for your personal data to keep testing it.

And that’s thanks to devs. It used to be a fun game, despite the bugs that Farm 51 ignored from the beginning. Unfortunately the gaming industry is plagued by a “build first, polish later” myth that simply doesn’t work, and this game is the posterchild of that mentality (which btw never works). Bugs amounted to the hundreds, every update introduced more bugs without fixing previous ones, and devs stubbornly insisted on cramming more features nobody wanted while ignoring the pink glowing elephant in the room.

This is clearly the Battlefield game of the year (since Battlefield 5 shifted to “run and gun” kids gameplay style.

After Gigapatch update this game is definitely worth buying. I started playing since the game release, and i can tell you the game we have now is like a new one. The game still has some performance issues (whether on server side or game optimization), but if your PC falls into recommended requirements you will not notice any issue.

In one sentence: This game is like BF3 but a much more hardcore version.

Bionite: Origins

Bionite: Origins

At its current state I can’t recommend. I’ve re-downloaded when new updates were made, but sadly the game does not feel like BZ. The controls are too sophisticated (couldn’t implement the original’s?), unit AI needs a huge improvement, and many bugs just build on top of it all. Seriously though, commanding your constructor to build a guntower shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes. Bad pathfinding and controls plague a game where basic game mechanics should be a priority. Besides, 6+ years and it’s still in early access? Sorry, but donating to them was a mistake.

Real player with 2.0 hrs in game

As others have said, this game unfortunately seems to have grinded to a halt since 2018? Developers obviously lost interest. It’s a buggy mess that is COMPLETELY unplayable at this stage; controls are wacky and nothing seems to work correctly. Don’t buy it.

I think everyone was hoping something great would come of this spiritual successor… it’s a shame. Oh well, Battlezone 98 Redux and Battlezone: Combat Commander are on Steam now at least.

EDIT in response to developer:

I fully understand that game development is very difficult, especially when starting out or with only a small team, and as such, many projects take years to develop.

Ready or Not utilizes a simple and organic control scheme which won’t have players fumbling around, forgetting dozens of key bindings.

Officers can decide to deploy with items such as ballistic shields, door rams, tactical ladders, and much more. Swat units can also choose to enlist personnel to assist with the situation, including sniper teams and negotiators.

10/10. also because the attention to detail and direction is top notch and i completely am on board with the realism they attempt to achieve. it is just a masterpiece of what rainbow six and ghost recon could have been had they kept with their original focuses.

I never leave reviews, it’s that good. The movement is smooth, the firearms all manipulate and fire like firearms. No HUD or indicators other than your stance (which can be turned off). It is a little light in features at the moment, so keep that in mind though.

Insurgency

Insurgency

Many of the games at a 60$ price aren’t worth that amount. This game is definitely worth MORE than 15. It doesn’t matter if it’s on sale, you should get this game and tell your friends to get it. Here is why:

I have accumulated over 1,200 hours on this game and have actually founded a competitive insurgency team. It’s only fair that I give the game the review it deserves. If you want to know about a lot about the game before you buy it, you’re reading the right review.

The Competitive Scene:

The competitive scene, while not as big as CSGO, has been mostly developed by the players-many of which have played the game for a long time. These leagues (DGL, ESL, ANZ) spread across every region of the world and have offered regional seasons, tournaments, draft tournaments and even world cups. No matter what region you are from, you can play this game. I’ve played with guys from South America, America and Canada, Eastern and Western Europe (from the UK to Ukraine), Australia and New Zealand, etc. The game does not boast ten’s of thousands of players but the players that play this game in the competitive scene are very dedicated. It is not as hard to learn how to play as it used to be because the game has been allowed to develop and the players have figured out how to play the different maps in general. If you’re wondering what “game type” the competitive scene revolves around, it’s a game mode with 3 points that you can capture, objectives similar to that of the battlefield genre or starwars battlefront. You own one, they start owning one, and then there is a neutral point. If you cap a point, you bring your whole team back. You start with 5 players and they start with 5 players, you fight to the death to kill the other team, using all sorts of strategies and tactics, but also try to potentially cap a point (or bait a cap) and bring the rest of your team back. Sounds fun as hell, right? It’s awesome.

I decided to hold off on writing a review until there were a few more updates and for me to have at least 500+ hours invested into the game. I am going to keep this straight up what i think about it as a whole with no fluff. Short and sweet.

Should you get it? It depends on what type of fps’s you like. Many CS players have fell in love with it because they like the realism and they’ve grown tired of the arcade feel that most other shooters have. Don’t doubt it for a second, this game is hard to pick up on but once you do, you realize how well reflexes really help if you’re rushing but don’t expect to be 360 no-scoping people because there is almost no chance in hell that that will happen. Those with good aim that are looking down sight as you turn a corner will get you every time so this is a game best played instinctively and safe (just don’t be one of those snipers that sit at spawn and let the enemy capture everything). There are few grenade, C4, or launcher spots that few people know of and use at the start of some maps which can be frustrating, so that is why I’m really hoping that much larger maps will be released in the future that are more open and don’t feel as constrained/guided (Heights and Buhriz are like that but i still love them). Maps that were easy to spawn camp have been updated heavily to prevent that which is great. The devs are absolutely brilliant at balancing and opening new areas of maps, always on top of it so kudos to them.

Takedown: Red Sabre

Takedown: Red Sabre

Takedown: Red Sabre is a SWAT esque first person shooter where you go through multiple levels with your team.

Story:

Takedown: Red Sabre doesn’t really have a story, there’s multiple levels that have no connections whatsoever. Levels range from clearing a radio station in the mountains, or saving hostages in an overtaken container ship. They give you a debrief of what needs to be done and then you are thrown in the mission. That’s about it honestly, so if you want a story to go along with your swat escapades you’re gonna have to keep looking somewhere else.

Takedown: Red Sabre * 5/10

Essentially a very high potential tactical FPS which unfortunately is abandoned in an alpha stage at best. Buy and play at your own risk.

INTRO. What is Takedown: Red Sabre about?

Takedown Red Sabre is an abandoned attempt to revive the tactical FPS genre that is best represented by games like SWAT 4 or Rainbow six.. NO, NOT SIEGE. Rainbow six 3: Raven Shield. I say it’s an abandoned attempt and not a failed attempt because that’s what happened, and that’s what it is. Serellan llc was a one man driven company with different collaborators that abandoned the project along the way. This dude abandoned development for TD:RS and started developing Epsilon, another abandoned attempt of the same genre.

This is hands down my favorite FPS game of all time. I know I don’t have much time played on PC, but on my XBox, I can say with confidence I have well over 1,000 hours into the game. I play it with a friend very frequently.

When you have a good co-op partner, this game is really all you need. Terrorist Hunt is where all my time is spent. If I’m not making America safe again, I’m customizing my guy. It WAS a solid co-op shooter that I’d say HELD up even when they SHUT THE SERVERS DOWN. It’s only $10, but unless you’re willing to fiddle with LAN, go play Insurgency: Sandstorm.

Played this game back in the day tons of times. Good memories.

The good:

Graphics are a later Unreal Engine so they aren’t bad.

Highly customizable loadout that is made available to you as you progress through the levels with experience.

A very detailed upgrade model based on experience and types of shots made. You gain experience points based on the shot you make, be it close quarter, long-range, assault mode, etc. Each shot gains you XP points for a specific type of ladder and each ladder (CQB, assaulter, marksman) has its own rewards and perks.
