Tower of Guns

Tower of Guns

10 hours in now and I’m still learning.

Tower of Guns is great some of the best Run ‘n’ Gun Fun available.

The game mechanics aren’t too punishing or lazy, things are simple and work well, when you are fighting through a horde of spikes are shooting a wall of spikes you don’t need clutter and there isn’t.

The gameplay is fast and keeps you on your toes even with a high level gun with a powerful mod to boot, level design is great fun and beautifully imagined. The secrets idea is great fun as you’ll never know when you’ll find one or see a platform above you and wonder whats up there and you may well spend minutes scouring a level for fake walls and platforms long after the enemies are gone.

To me one of the best games of this year, Tower of Guns has far exceeded my expectations. Although I saw some early gameplay on YouTube, I wasn’t sure how well the roguelike/lite gameplay would fit in a FPS. Needless to say, it worked beautifully.

Overview

Essentially, Tower of Guns is about fighting your way up a tower filled with automatons all hell-bent on your death. You begin by choosing a weapon and a perk. As you complete the game, you will unlock other guns/ perks which can be used on different playthroughs. On your way up, you’ll also collect power ups, such as additional jumps, damage, luck, jump height, and difficulty increases or decreases. Additionally, you may replenish health and experience (more on that later) via pickups.

Gunfire Reborn

Gunfire Reborn

Feels about time to recommend this now that it has hit version 1.0.

Gunfire Reborn is a roguelite that mixes FPS and RPG elements. Each hero has unique abilities, passives, and roles. You can play solo or with up to three others (4 players max) and the experience feels better with others in my opinion. Each run is procedurally-generated and you will learn patterns overtime. A typical run will see you collecting goblets to fill out your skill trees, scrolls to power up various aspects of gameplay, and improving your weapons.

It’s pretty good. If you like roguelites (roguelikes with significant metaprogression, so roguelites = roguelike-rpgs) like Hades/Dead Cells/Undermine, and co-op FPSes like Borderlands/Remnants/Destiny, then you should in theory enjoy this game a lot.

It has quite a few difficulty levels, a lot of guns that feel fairly good to use, and the opportunity to build up one of the few characters with unique abilities and upgrades, thanks to the help of many items providing permanent passive buffs. There’s 6 characters, and while the abilities they come with aren’t too oustanding or unique by themselves, the upgrades gives them the opportunity to differentiate themselves from eachothers.

Receiver

Receiver

…please take a moment to confirm that the firearm you have been issued is in working order and has one full magazine.

Receiver is an experimental First Person Shooter, developed in just 7 days to partake in a Game Jam challenge.

The plot is told via cassette tapes, that you must collect 11 of in a single playthrough.

Almost every surface is untextured and there’s minimal, if any, post processing. Surprisingly good lighting effects. The most detailed models in the game are the firearms, conspicuously floating in front of your invisible player avatar as part of the developers' conscious decision to not obstruct the weapon models with your mortal

! except not arms.

Receiver is a unique FPS game by it’s mechanics. It has downsides about which I’ll talk in a bit, but I personally love it. In order to play it successfully you have to pass a learning curve and it worth it. It has been years since I’ve played it the first time and I still remember how to play it. It’s like a bike – when you learned it, it’s hard to unlearn it.

Now, about the downsides. The game was developed in 7-day FPS challenge, keep that in mind. It means that developers didn’t have time to write a story or to create many interesting levels. What they did is made solid building blocks, which can be combined together in any way, so the engine generates level while you’re wondering through it. Also, there are two types of enemies and, believe me, that’s more than enough. Standing turrets and flying electrocuting drones are deadly but fair.

This game is an absolute blast and performs really well since the last update. The guns are satisfying and the tracks absolute bangers. There is only 1 issue I have with this game, the music. There is only 1 song per level. even though i just mentioned that the songs were good, it gets tiring listening to the same songs over and over and over again, especially if you keep dying and have to hear the same old song on level one each time you fail. If the devs were to put a group of songs for each level to cycle through then i think id be able to play this game for much longer per session.

Killing Room

Killing Room

IN A WORD: MAYBE

IN SHORT:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Indie game. Rogue-Lite FPS. Running man theme/setting. RPG elements affect gameplay. Average visuals and audio. Some humourous/comedic references. Steep learning curve. Expect lots of retries before first win. Great design, provides alot of replayability. Very well balanced. Gameplay is limited by restricted strategies. Uses assets. Better than the sum of its parts. Lacking in optimization/frame drops for some. A very few/rare bugs. Singleplayer only. It has absolutely nothing to do with Killing Floor.

Quick summary of what this is: Roguelite FPS with a reality tv theme. You begin a run with an audience rating of 40 and things you do while playing can add or subtract from that.

So far so good. That description and the demo video is why I bought this. However everything goes off the rails fairly quickly. All the guns are lame as hell. If a gun has any decent qualities, they are then ruined by the insane reload times and lack of ammo. The entire game is basically you running around a rectangular room trying to avoid getting hit while going through the 4+ second long reload time on a gun. And to make matters worse, there are beartraps all over the floor which do massive damage and stick you to that spot on the ground. It’s really not a great experience.

Paranautical Activity: Deluxe Atonement Edition

Paranautical Activity: Deluxe Atonement Edition

Another early access game gone astray, this game had so much potential till 1) the devs are the worst 2) sold out quick 3) released an unfinished game.

The grindy industrial music adds a lot to this epileptic bullet hell fps but everything else in this game is extremely lacking. Stylistically, this game is total garbage. There is no consistency to any of the art you find in the game and the “nautical” of this game is forced in to what seems like a random set of enemies. You’re on a nazi ship and you’ll find anything from moths to snails if you get the just. They only have two different room backgrounds they apply to rooms with different torch placements. Yes you heard that right two room backgrounds on a FINISHED GAME IN A GAME WHERE YOU ONLY GO INTO ROOMS. And the graphics oh my lord the graphics. These graphics looked like they were made by a 15 year old learning how to use voxel. Holy shit are they just flat out terrible.

I have very mixed feelings about Paranautical Activity. Almost every positive about the game is countered with a negative, yet I’d still recommend it to players who are really into roguelites and mid-90’s first-person shooters (and don’t mind a game that looks and sounds like crap, if I’m being honest). They could get a few hours of genuine fun out of it, and maybe even find it addicting, like I have. However, if you’re not totally in love with both of those genres, the game’s flaws will probably be too much to ignore.

Alright this is the first innovative idea i have seen since minecraft. if this game was in a finished state i know id play at least one round a day. no criticism is relevant given that this is early access. Bugs are expected!! i love the fact that the environments are not claustrophobic so u dont get cheaped into a corner and mauled to death, not naming any names (caugh killing floor) i would love to see 02 restoration points or possibly the ability to buy o2 with coins (mabe u can not sure) and 5x speed would be cool 2. love the music and creepy demonic rambling, leaves you feeling like your being followed by satan. cant wait to see what the next update brings, hoping it will allow me to kill till i die from unnatural causes. thank you guys from detering from the mainstream and not trying to cater to the 12 yesr old cod fans. I WANT MORE OF THIS GAME!!!!

EDITED FROM LAST TIME PLAYING

8.5/10

This game has a few problems, but frankly, if I can still play, it is fine by me.

This is better than half the games I’ve played back in the day, and less buggy to boot! (and its only in….beta?, alpha?, EA?, I Dont F***ing Know the term!)

My only other nitpicks are:

1: I couldnt figure out the shop

2: Enemies can spawn right next to you, getting in a sneak attack before your aware FIXED (FOR ME AT LEAST) ENEMIES SEEMED UNABLE TO SPAWN WITHIN 5 METERS OF ME

This is both a review and a word of advice to players before they begin, regarding how to play it.

Advice:

Play the game on Hard or Hard Bastard difficulty, not Normal difficulty.

Explanation and review:

I was this close to writing a negative review of Void Bastards, after finishing it on Normal difficulty. I enjoyed it, but the amount of content was mismatched with the price, and I’d purchased it - despite reading other reviews to that effect - hoping the game would continue to be expanded.
