Arthurian Legends
The Greatest Medieval Retro FPS to date…
Okay, so listen, son! This is the most fun, most historically inaccurate, bonkers, no-nonsense, Arthurian slaughter-fest you can ever imagine in videogame format. It’s like if it was made in 1996, before it was lost and forgotten for ages until a young and brave archeologist dug it out from some old crypt in Ireland.
It is highly addicting and rewarding with full of opportunities created by the wide variety of weapons, spells, and items. It’s almost like an immersive sim in terms of how many different ways you can approach an encounter or problem. It is hard but fair, very reminiscent of Blood where you need to adapt quickly to tense situations yet always thread very carefully to succeed.

This is an excellent game for fans of classic melee FPS games like, yes, Witchaven I & II. It’s absolutely a hoot to play, the secrets are very well hidden, and there’s a real attempt at atmosphere going on. I almost wish it was more like an immersive sim (or at least a step or two towards Hedon) in including notes to read along the way, just because the environments LOOK like they’d have little stories to tell. Excellent work, there.
So, all of that said, let me focus on what needs improvement, starting with one issue/disclaimer.

Bullet Wave
Even though it’s short and quite buggy, Bullet Wave is a fun way to kill half an hour. I’ve played it for about twice that, 58 minutes to be exact, and I don’t really plan to go back to it anytime soon, but considering it’s only a dollar, why wouldn’t you try it?

Pretty good for what it is. Short, fun to play. Could use a few fixes here and there but other than that it’s not bad. The boss is a little too tanky in my opinon but other than that it’s good.

Return To Sender
Return to Sender is a competitive horde mode first-person shooter with retro graphics reminiscent of Wolfenstein 3D and a multiplayer mode inspired by Tetris.

Rise of the Triad
There are 2 options to follow when a developer decides to do a remake: either it remains true to the original, including (the quite possibly dated and obsolete) gameplay or it gets modernized to today’s standards becoming only slighty reminiscent to its predecessor. The best way to go of course is the successful combination of the 2, something like Doom 3 . The creators of Rise of the Triad chose the first option with all its benefits and risks and while it can’t possibly compete with present day story-driven FPSs, mainly due to the unique nature of the original game, it still manages to remain an enjoyable first-person shooter.

If DOOM (2016) and Shadow Warrior (2013) could be comparable to the success of Shovel Knight by how they deviated from the guidelines of the old-school FPSs, choosing instead to resonate the nostalgic memories into a new game, then Rise of the Triad (2013) is a case of where it adheres entirely to the classic formula with graphical differences. Some might argue that this is to the detriment as the original Rise of the Triad wasn’t without its own share of issues the reboot inherits.
As someone who enjoys the shattered expectations that ROTT brings to old-school FPSs, it has always baffled me how this game never got wide acceptance in spite of its flaws. If people can accept what kind of old-school FPS experience it wants to be, and not what people assume from these games, there is a great experience to be had that keeps true to what people love about these old-school FPS. It’s not a perfect game nor is the foundation it is built upon without its issues; however, most complaints about the gameplay come across as misunderstanding the niche appeal of ROTT and how it manages to stand itself out from the other FPSs of the past as well as the present.

The Last Exterminator
Extermination pays the bills. Now the world is under attack, it’s time to make a killing.
The Last Exterminator brings back the adrenaline-fueled carnage of FPS games from the 90s such as Doom, Duke 3D, Blood and Quake.
You play as Kira Parker, a down-on-her-luck exterminator barely making ends meet. When working a job one night, an alien invasion starts tearing apart the city, and in the crossfire they manage to destroy the only thing that Parker had left; her van. With nothing left to lose, she fights her way through the streets to tackle the invasion head-on, and figure out just what the hell is happening in this city.
Battle your way through three episodes of action-packed, hand-crafted levels, full of frantic chaos and devious secrets. Arm yourself with 12 unique weapons, including Shotguns, Dual Uzis and the explosive Demolition Disc, and use them to take on an army featuring over 16 unique enemy types, from the lowly and plentiful Gruntroaches to the fierce and powerful Abomination, The Last Exterminator is a love letter to FPS games from the 90s and the action movies that inspired them.

ARKOS
Prefer Watching?
Otherwise Keep Reading! :)
Remember when games used to be insanely difficult and you’d end up getting stuck on a level for days until you eventually beat it and felt like a god for a straight week?
Well Arkos reminds me of that, not just because of its unforgiving approach to difficulty and level design where it often just tosses you head first into the deep end of a lava filled room, but also in the way it looks and sounds, because it’s intended in every way to be a modernized recreation of classic FPS games like DOOM and Heretic, mixed with modern voxel based physics, destructible environments and a custom soundtrack that’s easily worthy of the greats.

Arkos plays just like the old shooters with more colorful setting and destructible environment. It’s a shame it offers just a little delicious slice instead of serving the whole cake.
It’s a good thing you don’t play these games for the story because there isn’t much of one here. The Wanderer, the game’s protagonist, must collect ancient weapons and overcome dungeon guardians. This is the only info you’ll acquire, save from a single scroll with a few phrases at the start of each world.

Core Decay
FACE A DYING EARTH
The year is 2089. For decades past, the availability of natural resources has declined to the point of societal collapse. Nations are governed by corporations, and the planet is on the brink of an ecological collapse that will leave nothing left alive.
During mankind’s last breath arises a shadowy network of conspirators, bent on saving the human species using any means necessary – even if it means sacrificing all it means to be alive.
Follow the trails of a mysterious organization across a dying Earth, in an atmospheric singleplayer adventure of 11 locations to explore.
FIND YOUR OWN PATH
As you explore vast facilities, combat is not the only path to success. You may find that often the best approach is to avoid hostile engagement altogether and instead find creative solutions to reach your goals.
Explore alternate routes, hack computers and security systems, discover lost logs, keycodes and passwords, and use every tool at your disposal to reach your objectives.
BATTLE FOR SURVIVAL
Leave a wake of destruction as you travel across mysterious installations left behind by the ominous Contingency Accord, and turn their own weapons against them as you trigger facility-wide reactor core meltdowns.
As you traverse vast, deadly facilities, you will come across powerful armaments, experimental weapons, and secret equipment.
Use an arsenal of unique weapons and other combat equipment, as you battle both security robotics and the remnants of experiments gone horribly wrong.
DEFINE YOUR HUMANITY
You are an anomaly. Waking up in a cold storage pod with little recollection of your past, you find yourself far less human than you remember – and far more of a machine.
With strange but powerful new abilities, you are forced to reconcile with your new self, and understand what it means to be alive.
Upgrade yourself with over 100 game-changing cybernetic implants as you explore levels, defeat enemies, and gain experience.
ENCHAIN
You are the Last Deprived, the final corpse to ever rise from the stone depths, dooming all creation to a ceaseless death. This underworld does not welcome you. Unlock the secrets of the crypt, take back life from your fleshless brethren, and fight your own way out of humanity’s tomb.
ENCHAIN links hack & slash juggling and frenetic platforming with fast-paced retro FPS gunplay. Inspired by platform fighters and Quake, smash the undead into pieces with your lantern hook and arsenal of guns. And, with progression and verticality influenced by Dark Souls, tackle a single interconnected world chunk by chunk, retreading old paths and secrets.
Get lost in the chasm. No one will be holding your cold, hollow hands along the way.
-
Grapple, shoot, kick, and dive between platforming and combat
-
Fracture and harvest the bones of the undead for resources
-
Explore an intertwined, non-linear underworld
-
Rest at cozy lantern posts to store the fruits of your travels

Ion Fury
I’ve never had any particular nostalgia for BUILD engine shooters cause I pretty much missed all of them during my childhood, so I went in without wearing nostalgia googles (well, almost). Yet, Ion Maiden (shh, don’t tell scumbag lawyers) absolutely blew me away from the first few levels.
-Solid gameplay with some of the punchiest guns I ever used in a FPS (save for Doom gameplay wads). The game lets you use its entire arsenal pretty much from the get-go and develop your own playstyle. Every gun has its place, even the default pistol which is traditionally discarded the second a shotgun shows up. That demonstrates nicely that the devs not only took the elements of classic shooters, but also improved on them.

This is a heavily shortened version of my full review. Check it out at https://www.vgr.com/ion-fury-pc-game-review
STORY: 8/10
Ion Fury is actually a prequel of sorts to a previous 3D Realms game titled “Bombshell”. It features Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison who herself is based on a cut character from Duke Nukem Forever, who originally was going to be a sidekick of Duke. Ion Fury follows Shelly’s exploits as a GDF police chief in Neo DC, tracking down the leader of a cybernetic cult that has risen on the streets, which are flooded with augmented punks that seem eager to die for their new leader. As it turns out, the leader is Professor Jadus Heskel, a scientist hellbent on world domination. It is up to Shelly to track him down and end his reign. Yeah the game is certainly not heavy on story, but much like its fathers, it doesn’t really need one. So let’s move on to talking about the gameplay.
