Forgive Me Father

Forgive Me Father

Score: 7.5 / 10

Price/Value: FULL

Time: 2-ish hours

Difficulties played: Extreme

A retro Lovecraft themed FPS that I was really glad to see got a demo in the last Steam Next Fest - one of my favourites - and the main product is more of that eldritch goodness.

You play a priest coming to an Innsmouth style town looking for answers and packing some serious faith lead. You will have access to upgradeable weapons in the form of a:

  • Knife (bread and butter weapon)

Real player with 8.1 hrs in game

tl;dr, good game at present, can be a great game with some improvements - solid 7/10 currently. I really liked it and I’m looking forward to more.

Detailed pros, neutrals & cons below, but includes some spoilers as to content.

Pros

  • Game controls very well. Character is fast and fluid, which suits the backpedal/strafe style required.

  • Gunplay is excellent, guns have good feedback and they feel effective.

  • Graphics are excellent. Enemy design is unique and enemy telegraphing is fairly clear. Level aesthetics are varied.

The Shore is a running simulator with most of the mandatory Lovecraft Creatures (the old ones) and a protagonist who will not die automatically by looking at them.

This is the first game developed by Ares Dragonis who is entering the world of Steam with this game.

Ebbs and Flows

Introduction

The Shore is a Narrative-driven Walking Simulator with some light combat and puzzles, heavily inspired by H. P. Lovecraft. You are Andrew looking for your daughter, Elle, on an island known for its unique geographic makeup; black sand and jagged, protruding rocks. And home to many shipwrecks. You’ve come to this little, unusual island in hopes of finding your daughter, only to find a bounteous sweeping phenomenon beyond the importance of your daughter.

Shrine

Shrine

Shrine is by far one of the most fun WADs I have played for DOOM 2. It is absolutely worth your time, and the fact this WAD is free is just the cherry on top. It has many pros and only a few cons:

Pros:

  • Level design is simple enough that you won’t get lost, yet flows generally quite well and is aesthetically pleasing

  • The music and sound design in this WAD is pretty awesome as well - it fits well with the theme of an Eldritch HR Gieger-esque world by having some genuinely spine-shivering screaming that you can hear in some of the Eldritch dimension levels such as “The Womb”

Real player with 4.3 hrs in game

Shrine is a simple 16-level GZdoom stand-alone mod. The game itself plays okay-ish, however, lacks many factors that make a game, or a doom-like mod really good.

TL;DR: It’s not good, but it ain’t bad either. Worth to play if you don’t have anything better to play; I’d recommend other free mods/TC for doom instead of this though.

PROS:

  • Innovative form of ammo (although i personally disliked it), one pickup that grants ammo to all weapons, though ammo is not shared across most of the items

  • Map layout is decent, and the use of lighting is really good.

Call of Cthulhu®: Dark Corners of the Earth

Call of Cthulhu®: Dark Corners of the Earth

OLD STYLE HORROR… Oh Yea!

Intro:

This game is based on the works of H. P. Lovecraft, author of “The Call of Cthulhu” and progenitor of the Cthulhu Mythos. It is a reimagining of Lovecraft’s 1936 novella The Shadow over Innsmouth. Set mostly in the year 1922, the story follows Jack Walters (previously a police detective) and now private detective who is trying to solve cases even when there wasn’t any evidence. On September 6, 1915, he was called by the police to investigate a decrepit manor where gunshots were heard. A group of an unknown cult (Fellowship of the Yith) lived there and it’s leader, Victor Holt, demanded the police only send Jack in exchange for their cooperation. Strangely, Jack had never met or heard of Victor Holt before. As Jack entered the manor’s compound, all hell broke loose and both the police and the cultists started shooting at one another. You take it from here. All hell is about to break loose in the game.

I am a fan of both Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s fantastic literary body having read most of his work and also the Role playing game the Call of Cthulhu (the table top one not the new one). I very much enjoyed this game despite the glitches (should you wish to play without the glitches I would suggest that you either buy this game on good old games or install the patch that can be found online, and turn down the resolution for the very last bit of the game to the lowest setting).

I have to say that don’t go into this game expecting something akin to one of Lovecraft’s stories word for word, while it deals with the same themes and even one of the same characters this game is a bit of Lovecraft salad. You get bits from The Shadow over Innsmouth, The Call of Cthulhu, The Shadow out of time, Dagon, At the Mountains of Madness and even some references to The

DUSK

DUSK

Christ! I’m not sure how to respond to this game. I’m iin my 30’s and i grew up on fps games. DUSK is possibly the best game I have ever played. I feel that the creator grew up playing, doom, quake, half-life and the like. The game is so perfectly created by someone who wished that he could create a shooter that took small parts from all of those games and put them together in a way that i would never expect. It is retro in a way that isnt jokey, but it incorporates all the best elements from every 90’s shooter. In conclusion, its not half-life, but it’s better than every other shooter that came before that. Honestly, one of the best shooters of all time.

Real player with 72.9 hrs in game

Fantastic shooter and had me gripped from start to finish. If you like the retro style then this game is for you. Loads of secrets similar to doom etc. Gameplay is smooth and fluid. Runs like a dream at 120fps+.Such a simple game to play, it’s a no nonsense shooter. Updated on a regular basis and great value for money. Loving it.

Highly recommended. A++

Paradox Vector

Paradox Vector

The most exciting and admirable aspect of Paradox Vector is unquestionably the art design, which is not only unique, but a true joy to look at. All the colors and shapes build up a very stylized, but beautiful environment which is exciting to explore to the last detail.

Apart from that, many other aspects of the game may or may not cause… 𝘮𝘪𝘹𝘦𝘥 feelings in certain players - depending on their gaming taste or temperament - like the enemy AI, the layout of the levels, the sometimes unbalanced difficulty, the sharp contrast between the first and second half of the game, etc. But even with the hit and miss parts, I think Paradox Vector is still worth to play. Recalls many great and interesting aspects of old (FPS) games combining with a truly unique aesthetic.

Real player with 11.6 hrs in game

I’m not too far into Paradox Vector but I’m very much enjoying the old school vibe of the game. Think 80s Tron combined with a prison-labyrinth setting. The game has proved quite challenging due to HP restores being limited, however the dev has noted this and adding some extra nodes to make the game a bit less daunting at the start. (Even though I died a lot, I actually enjoyed how punishing it felt, reminded me of the good old days)

There’s no real soundtrack to the game from what I’ve encountered, but the creepy ambience adds to the atmosphere. It actually surprised me with how many jump scares it’s given me. Prepare for plenty of brain-bending areas that will play tricks on your mind as you try to navigate your surroundings.

CTHON

CTHON

CTHON is weird game. Built around the technical limitations of Wolfenstein 3D era (90 degree walls, no height variations) and set in a dark sci-fi world it blends the first-person combat with upgrades and randomness. You choose one of three character classes and embark on a journey into a procedurally generated labyrith spanning across nine levels divided into three different themes with random pickups and encounters. You have three weapons at your disposal, all of which can be upgraded with mods that not only increase their effectiveness but also change their appearance. Your character can also make use of upgrades that boost your health, armor, ammo capacity, movement speed and so on. You can swap and change your build as much as you want but you’re restricted by two things: inventory space (that determines how many items you can keep at once) and power capacity (each upgrade requires power to be activated). Finally, during your adventures you might encounter machines that let you buy, sell or salvage items as well as upgrade your inventory and power output with Nanites that serve as a currency.

Real player with 10.5 hrs in game

At first glance, CTHON appears to be a clone of early first-person shooters, like Wolfenstein 3D. And if you go into the game expecting that kind of blazing-fast, silly action, you’ll be disappointed.

Instead, CTHON almost feels like a heavily simplified System Shock. The slower pace, the gloomy, claustrophobic hallways, and a deliciously spooky soundtrack (seriously, these are really creepy tunes) all conspire to create the kind of tension-fraught, horror-FPS atmosphere that I’ve longed to experience again since the mid-2000’s. As it’s a roguelite, death is permanent (though you can save your game and come back later, thankfully), and all the maps have randomized layouts, meaning that you never fully know what fresh nightmares are hiding in the dark around every corner.
