Borderlands Game of the Year

Borderlands Game of the Year

Big maps filled with a horde of enemies, Millions of gun combinations and dark humor all fit into one large barrel o' fun.

I have gotten my hands on this game way back in 2012 and back then, i didn’t know what i was doing at all, but after a long break without playing the game, to then buy it back on Steam, i don’t regret getting back into it at all.

This game has it all if you’re looking for a loot-and-shoot game. There’s weapons ranging from simple repeater pistols, to rocket launchers and alien weaponry (Eridian weapons may be a little disappointing). They can shoot flames, shock or acid too! On top of that, there’s a bunch of different shield types, grenade mods and class mods, which, along with each character’s skill trees, allow for dozens of different character builds. For a game from 2009, this game looks very good for it’s time in terms of graphics. If your computer isn’t that great, you can always optimize it further than normal. If you plan to buy this, your best bet is getting the GOTY “Enhanced” version. The “Enhanced” edition brings new features, but also new bugs, like memory leaks. However, it’s more ideal if you will only play through the game once or twice.

FPSs aren’t really my thing and I hadn’t played an FPS for maybe 10 years when I accepted trying this out because of a friend’s insistence and my honest intention was to tell my friend “it’s fine but you know, not my thing”, so that I would’ve complied with his request and lose like half an hour playing an FPS. That’s how biased I was against playing Borderlands when I started.

But boy was I in for a ride. The cut-throat atmosphere, dark humour and especially the loot system right away from the get go got me interested. I kept playing and realized I wasn’t that bad of a shot, it was freakishly fun, the skill system and the player characters you get to choose are super cool and the game in general is well super-badass-cool. A wasteland world full of drug pumped bandits, mutated vicious animals and the best part is, well, you’re no better, you’re a cut-throat mercenary in search of legendary lost alien riches and technologies. The friendly NPCs or “good guys” you get to meet during your travels are also shady characters fitting the premise incredibly well.

Apastron

Apastron

From a casual standpoint this game is great. For the price it has so much content. You can play through the game several times and the massive amount of random weapons keeps the game fresh. There are cool hidden places to explore that you will find on subsequent runs that yield different weapons. Some weapons don’t feel great but the dev patches so often and guns are constantly being made smoother. My big complaint with combat is that I cannot see my reticle easily. I don’t know if this is a resolution scaling issue because I play on 2k or not. MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL the game is getting so much free content. New weapons, abilities, and areas have been patched in since I first started playing. A WHOLE NEW EXPANSION will be FREE at the end of the month that nearly doubles the games length. Now for those of you wondering how I have so many hours in this game, I speedrun it and boy is it amazing for that. The modern movement in a classic style shooter plus the perfect amount of breakable stuff makes it the most fun speedrun I’ve ever done. This game has something for everyone. If you struggle with the tutorialisation please don’t just quit, give it an effort. The tutorial is much improved. It’s $6 just try it gamers. NOTE: I was given a copy for free about a month early to help with some QA since I expressed interest, but I promise this does not vastly change my opinion nor was I paid for anything.

The effort made and put into Apastron (especially from a one man developer) is pretty admirable. Here you have what amounts to the first episode (about 2 to 2-1/2 hours of game) of a unique world peopled by an oppressive corporation and the resistance that would oppose them.

While the game has its ‘open’ moments, the structure is indeed Episode 1: Level 1 in structure and it does proceed normally, that is to say, completely linearly. There is a bit of down time between missions but that is mostly used exploring the small hub town and speaking to the denizens about their day-to-day and their individual goings-on and to collect some currency and spend it at the weapon-shop.

EDIT: Episode 2 released, and it’s more insane than before, imo. Love it.

My thoughts?

This game is what would happen if B.J Blazkowicz dropped acid and ended up in a twisted Army of Darkness version of Might & Magic, then throw in some of that looter shooter goodness and you’ll have a good idea of the fun that awaits with this game.

The levels all flow nicely into each other despite being randomly generated from presets, and you’d be a bit hard pressed to tell it is at times as a result. All the weapons so far are a joy to use, all of them feeling pretty great, not to mention all of them work in a pinch if you run out of ammo for one of them. The spritework is impressive, as is the gore system (I had it set to Ludicrious and man does it live up to the name).

This is an utterly fantastic game. The heritage of the old boomer-shooters like Doom, Blood, Rise of the Triad and the like are present without being too much of a complete clone of those legends but this is a solid homage to those games from the past.

The art design has gone through a couple of overhauls, the most recent being the release with chapter two, so if you had seen earlier gameplay footage the looks have changed to not be overwhelming in the color department. (RIP Hula dancer zombie).

After around 1k hours of play time, I still love to play this gem of a game. New maps, mission types, cosmetics and so on are added from time to time for free. The available DLCs are only special cosmetics and not needed to be purchased except you want to support the developers a bit. Definetely worth a try! #ForKarl #RockandStone #Leavenobeerbehind

I’m really enjoying this game so far!! I love the open sand box feel, with the cross of zombies and survival, It’s a perfect concept. Even though this game is still in Alpha it really is growing fast. So far there have been updates weekly and any suggestions or concerns mentioned in their discord from the community have been discussed and acknowledged. You can really see that the Devs want to bring this game to life with the input from their community. Its great to see an indie company listen to their community and work with them hand in hand. The fact that the company is only charging a 1 time price to buy the game and no future charges for any new maps or DLC is huge too! I cannot wait to see what the future brings!

Shadow Warrior 2

Shadow Warrior 2

After 3 years since the remake of Shadow Warrior the developers released a second title that continues the story. Though it is not a large span of time, it is big enough to fix the problems of the original and improve its weak points to create a true full-fledged sequel. However, instead of this obvious option, the developers decided to totally change the games mechanics and gameplay, going away from classical single player shooter to some multiplayer-ish looter shooter aka progression for the sake of progression. Did they succeed? Well, sort of.
