Hecatomb

Hecatomb

In a world where cultists desperately need to be shot…

What, Were You Expecting A story?

Oh, Alright.

You are checks notes Gary, an unassuming nobody with no backstory, personality or, for the moment, voice, who got kidnapped by an evil cult aiming to summon their god into this reality. You are the final sacrifice. And you’re having none of it. You break out of your cell, and kill literally everybody so the cult cannot summon the great evil they worship.

#### A Window Into The 90s

3D enemies? 3D weapons? No. The enemies, the weapons, most of the props are all 2D sprites. What 3D models there are are crude and low-poly. Texture resolutions are abominable. I even wrote a special shader that lowers the apparent colour depth.

Commitment to the 90s aesthetic is near absolute: The sole exception is that the weapon viewsprites are normal mapped, which is anachronistic but looks so good.

#### Boom, Pew, Bang

Shoot all the bad guys! Or hit them! Or kerplode them!

Defeat your foes with these bog-standard FPS weapons:

  • Carpenter’s Hammer

  • Pistol

  • Submachine Gun

  • Shotgun

  • Hand Grenade

  • Fire Staff

  • Staker

  • Rocket Launcher

(Note: List subject to change as I see fit.)

#### Reinventing the Wheel

Unity? UE? Build?

No.

That would be easy.

Hecatomb is coded entirely in GameMaker. I had to do everything 3D myself. Among the things I had to figure out are:

  • Drawing walls and ceilings without tanking performance

  • How sprite-based enemies move

  • Shaders to restrict the colour palette

  • A normal mapping shader for the weapon viewsprites

  • How to calculate the position of bullet holes in a wall (it uses the tangent!)

  • How to bake lighting into the map

  • How mouselook works (Note: vertical mouse look is implemented, but disabled.)

  • And many more that cropped up over the months but I can’t think of right now.

Time To Stop Time

Time To Stop Time

This game is SERIOUSLY fun. You start off with super-slow-mo that lets you deflect human enemies' bullets back at them, and it goes from there. You ramp up with full time-stopping, telekinesis for having Fun With Physics (hint: it can be faster to THROW rockets at people than to just LAUNCH them), and a super-mode that turns it completely into Dio Simulator (complete with steamroller).

A story, to show you what’s possible in this game:

It’s the end of the world. I’m fighting a speedster. I unload at him point-blank with a minigun, but he dodges every shot. We keep fighting, keep clashing, moving through the level so I can grab more weapons to use on him. Then I notice – oh hey, hovering over there, those are the bullets from before. So I manoeuvre him, get him to stand with his back to the bullets… and I timeskip to make them all shoot him in the back at once. He goes down, and the day is saved.

this game is fun, the only level that bugs me rignt now is the one with the big red robot, 2 helicopters, 4-6 enemies with lightsabers, and a tank with 4 people. its too hard for my liking, you dont have enought energy, and the robots/ people with lightsabers are too OP. not only you do you have to avoid the big red robot, and the people with lightsabers that shoot blue forcefields, you have to worry about your energy,

Game description key-points: another gameCreator clone with nothing good

Real player with 1.8 hrs in game

What is the game?

Andromeda One Zombies is a very short game where you fight through zombies.

Gameplay:

The gameplay itself is fun but not unique in any way since it comes with the engine the game is made on.

Graphics:

The graphics are outdated but with the right world building and imagination it can still be enjoyable to look at.

Story:

There is none except the scenario presented in the description.

Problems:

The game is just too basic and has nothing interesting going on. No bugs I guess?

I was yelling so much while trying to beat level 1 that my parents walked in and thought I was watching pornography, I’ve been forced to go to family therapy ever since.

For two moons I was trapped within the confines of the first level of the game–simply because I repeated the idiotic mistakes repeatedly. It was a very unforgiving but enjoyable experience, and I admire the creator for manufacturing something quite acceptable. As winter is about to return to it’s slumber, I have a feeling of haste to continue playing this game before the fresh summer air returns. The seasonal timing is perfect from this; the entertainment value is quite exquisite. I look forward to playing more of Mr. Curlee Fro’s games, as I understand his everlasting important values towards gameplay.

RICO: London

RICO: London

Rico 2 is a sequel to the first Rico that not a lot of people played, but the ones who did, did mostly enjoy. The game for me was and still is pretty fun for what it is and i do recommend it, despite a few problems that it carries.

In terms of story, it’s just like the first game (which means: SKIP). I like the art style, i think that real XIII style graphics (Cell shaded) are not used enough and i find it charming in this game, which also has a bigger verity of environments and a bigger attention to detail. sound design is nothing special, does what it needs to but nothing memorable.

Real player with 14.6 hrs in game

RICO 2: London has an amazing art style, a classic rogue cop premise and good voice acting. All of that is weighed down to its death by a boring loop system, the same soundtrack played over and over and over again, a needlessly complicated weapon system and enemies who are laughably bullet spongey for zero reason.

Don’t buy this game.

BeachHead 2020

BeachHead 2020

This review is for the non-VR game.

I bought the early access BH2020 as soon as it came out and I’ve been enjoying it immensely. I thought BH2002 was a blast so I was excited for this newer version.

The game has a new and detailed look compared to the earlier version. The graphics are nice as are the sounds. I’ve only encountered minor glitches such as the game loosing count of health and a stutter with aiming, but they were quickly resolved when reported to the Devs.

The game is still “early-access” so issues are still being adjusted. I’ve found the Developers to be very attentive to any concerns that are communicated to them. It sounds like they have a huge and fascinating game besides the stationary shooting station out now.

A REAL review on BeachHead 2020

First off, looking at the negative reviews, these people are not giving it time. Almost all if not all played the game for less than an hour if that much (look at their hours on record). With that being said, this IS still in very Early Access, meaning that it will be less than perfect as the company works out the bugs, kinks and adds more features.

I have found a few issues like the aiming is kind of choppy when zooming in. But really I am not holding this against the company. As of writing up this review, the game version is at 1.1.1. So in time I am sure these minor things will be fixed.
