Mundaun

Mundaun

Mundaun is really good. It’s very refreshing to play a horror game set elsewhere than an asylum, a space station or a suburban house, there’s way too few games taking place in Switzerland. The game looks unique and I’m in awe just thinking how many graphite drawings it took and there’s quite a few striking setpieces I still think about to this day. The atmosphere is thick and eerie, you know something’s not right but can’t quite put your finger on it.

The characters are great, huge love for a certain evil one who oozes darkness. The romansh voice acting adds so much to the sense of mystery and it’s not like you’d play games in romansh everyday. The story is pretty straightforward and feels like a folktale you’d tell just before bedtime, a story the whole town would know.

Sometimes it only takes one picture to see that the game will be - at the very least - interesting. I saw the first picture of Mundaun on an indie website something like two years ago, and after that was patiently waiting for release. I was expecting another tiny 2-3-hour horror game - only this time with actual style and atmosphere.

What I didn’t expect was was ten hours of high production values all across the board.

  • A culturally informed take on the classical European ‘deal with the Devil’ scenario.

Denari

Denari

Denari is a narrative-driven hack and slasher with a telekinetic twist. It tells the story of a boy who is aided by the spirits of the dead to save his people from an invading empire. Featuring the iconic toon-style art of Ninja Kiwi veteran Tamihana Greaves and powerful soundtrack from multiple award winning composer David Mason.

Mechanics

On top of snappy attacks, quick dashes, precise counters and slick executions, players can harness the power of the goddess Qira. As a lone warrior against an army, manipulating enemy attacks to cause friendly fire damage is crucial to gaining an advantage.

Redirect

Ranged attacks can be caught and redirected. Some projectiles cause AOE damage upon redirected hit.

Blast

Taiu can wield spiritual energy that seeks nearby enemies.

Friendly Fire

Each enemy has a heavy attack that can hurt other enemies. Taiu can manipulate these attacks to gain the upper hand.

Characters

The player character of the story. Taiu is a young orphan who grew up on port Nali, a peaceful fishing village. He dreams of becoming one of Qira’s Apostles, a group of elite warrior monks who dedicate themselves to the service of the goddess Qira and her people.

Taiu’s zany teacher. Teach is a former apostle whose obsession with mastery has lead him to seek a disciple to train in the art of combat. As Taiu’s master, Teach takes it upon himself to push Taiu to his limits and beyond, sometimes at the risk of his dear student’s life.

The elder of Port Nali. Ooma’s long life of hard earned lessons have imbued her with great wisdom, enough to doubt even the most sacred traditions. Her disapproval in Taiu’s path and distaste for his teacher are rooted in questions of faith, ones she’s sought the answers to her whole life.

Enemies

The Denari army are a terrible force powered by advanced weaponry and dark magic. From the brutish Beast to the fire-wielding Crone, the Denari are able to adapt to and overpower any force that stands in their way.

To make matters worse, Their general, “the Summoner” possesses the power to teleport his soldiers from afar, enabling the army to cross continents and conquer new territories efficiently.

To stop the invasion for good, Taiu must face the Summoner and end him.

Aurora: A Child’s Journey

Aurora: A Child’s Journey

Aurora: A Child’s Journey is well done. There are a few areas where the game tried to glitch and the controls can be sometimes clunky, but besides that, it was simple and straight to the point. It was nice to play from the perspective of a young child and also an interesting concept of how they see things that are well…not pretty in this world. It can be sad to learn that the game was inspired by true events but also eye-opening to situations that many may not know. The achievements are easily earned as you play through the game and not as complex as the game is very short. Take a chance if you want to see the world in the young girl’s eyes and maybe you will learn something along the way.

Alexey’s Winter: Night adventure

Alexey’s Winter: Night adventure

I enjoyed playing this short point and click game. The hand drawn scenes have a great sense of place and the snow gives shivery cold feeling so I really felt sorry for the main character locked out of his apartment. The music was a good match for the game. The dialogue was very funny and endearing.

I had a small technical problem with my computer before I could play this game but the devs were really helpful and responsive so that the game works as it should now.

I hope the developers add some more episodes as I would definitely play them.

Alexey’s Winter: Night adventure is a very short point & click adventure set in the 1989’s USSR. The game was initially launched in 2017 on the mobile platform and gained positive feedback from the players. At a later date, it received a second episode (and as of Sep 26 2021 a third one) and underwent several design changes. This version was now ported to Steam as a paid item, while the mobile one remains free but was reverted back to one episode only.

The story follows Alexey’s troubles during one cold winter night, trying to get back his lost apartment keys. After a series of intricate puzzles he manages to regain access to his home, only to find out that in the meantime his TV was stolen. This sets the plot for the second and third episodes, which are slightly longer than the first one.

Forgotten Fields

Forgotten Fields

Forgotten Fields

Forgotten Fields drags you into the story with its cinematic and interactive approach. I was captivated from start to finish.

Brought to you by the same developer who made Rainswept, Forgotten Fields is an atmospheric, narrative driven, cinematic experience, chronicling the events of one Summer in a quiet town. The inspiration gained from the developer’s own home town near Goa, India.

Real player with 10.5 hrs in game

I loved Rainswept so I had high hopes for Forgotten Fields. For me, it fell short in a few areas. You control Sid - a 20-something guy with a deadline and a case of writer’s block. His mother is selling the family home and he is at that cusp in life where each of us recognizes that we are going to have to be a grown up. Much of the story and dialog is between a set of friends who are about to step out into ‘real life,’ each in their own direction.

In parallel, Sid is writing a story about a princess in a fantasy world. About half the game is controlling the princess within her own adventures. There are definite tie-ins between the choices facing the princess and the choices facing Sid.

Some long time ago I have heard of a Chinese Visual Novel in which the author wrote the story from his own experience with love / romantic interactions, which was actually really sad. But after I have played it I believe that this might be that game.

The story is pretty good, the OST has some very good songs, but overall is good. The voice acting is surprisingly good, even if I don’t know Chinese I can say it was pretty pleasant to hear them. The translations are not perfect, but it is enough to make you understand the story, and I believe that we should congratulate the developers for this instead of complaining. The puzzles / exercises are pretty easy, the math ones for me at least, except for the last one where I literally had to use my intuition. It also has some features that modern VNs have, the game has some 3D scenes which makes it more pleasant.

It’s a nice game. The first chapter offers you around 14 hours of game. There are at least 3 different endings, currently, I’ve only achieve the normal ending, I’m replaying the game to achieve the good one. I look forward to the second chapter!

The OST is also pretty good, I’m going to buy it plus the second chapter.

In the English translation there are some typos and I’ve found a little bug on a part of one act where previous subtitle wasn’t vanish so the last subtitle overlapped it. But the game is understandable and in spite of little bugs it’s completely playable.

One Chocobee Miruku please!

One of my all time favorite games is Va-11 Hall-A and ever since, I’ve been on the lookout for similar games ever since to scratch that itch it left behind. The closest I’ve gotten was playing The Red Strings Club which does have you literally pouring drinks to bring out certain emotions in your customers, but it turned out to be disappointing (for me at least). When I heard about Coffee Talk though, I knew I was going to pick this one up and play it as soon as I could. My decision was hammered home even more after I played the demo. Well, now that Coffee Talk is released how does it fare?

i stole this template ive always wanted to make one of these hehehe

  • DIFFICULTY -

this game was not that difficult at all. as i wanted to work on achievements though, i did use a guide from the start. without the guide, i do not think i wouldve gotten the “best” ending the first time. overall, i think the game is a fairly normal difficulty.

  • GRAPHICS -

this game has beautiful pixel art!!! i love pixel art. the art in this game is clean and i like it a lot. i wont say its amazing, but overall i think the art for the game is very nice and i think it plays a large part of the enjoyment for the game. each character is very unique and sticks out to me in good ways. there wasnt one character design that fell flat, they all made good impressions on me.
