Ganbare! Super Strikers

Ganbare! Super Strikers

Basic rundown

Ganbare! Super Strikers is a fun little game that focuses on the strategic layers of football, rather than fast action and quick decisions. It features XCOM-like turnbased gameplay, where you have a limited amount of actions per character, that you can use to move, tackle, pass, shoot and do other things that are common in football.

Clearly inspired by the old Captain Tsubasa nintendo games and sports animes/mangas, you have individual characters and teams with certain signature moves and/or behaviors/themes, that the player has to overcome. Those themes are mostly based around certain status effects like freeze, sleep, poison or simply increased stats and therefore higher chances for shooting, dribbling and so on.

Simple yet quite fun to play. However, there’s a an annoying bug, which freezes the game whenever you apply multiple debuffs to your opponent. Only get this game when it is on sales.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions

I have played this game first on Switch for 2 weeks, and then on Steam, and the problems are similar;

This game suffers from frequent crashes, specially if you go online and play multiplayer, where at times the game will lag to a halt, and then it’s up to one of the two players to voluntarily agree to shut down their game and take a loss so both players can be done with it and continue playing.

On the one hand, I thoroughly recommend this game to fans of the anime/manga, as this game is beautifully animated and accurately goes through the main story of the manga. I love that even after 200+ hours of gameplay, I still manage to find new scenes hidden within the very intricate friendship mechanic this game has, it’s like the only time i’ve ever truly enjoyed a visual novel type game. The gameplay itself is fun and I can’t put it down, despite the game’s glaring flaws.

I kinda wish Steam had a “mixed” review opinion, but when I remember why I decided to write this review in the first place anyway, the thumbs down is kinda deserved. Don’t get me wrong, the game isn’t bad, in fact, it has so much potential, but sadly the potential it has is kinda limited by really bad design decisions. Normally, this review was more informative about Captain Tsubasa series, but I hit the character limit so kiss bye bye to those.

I won’t really go on on positives and negatives (actually, I will rant about the bad game design after this paragraph), but I will just tell why and when you should buy this game. The game’s an action-sports game, and like I mentioned before, it plays according to its own mechanics, and it’s nothing unlike feefur or PESbabs. Now the mechanics are pretty straightforward, and truth be told, they are fun to pull off as you dribble through the entire opponent team and pull a flashy shot. However, it does get kinda old by time and there are not that many teams or even story modes, so you have been warned. I also think the game is a bit pricey, especially if you are in a 3rd world country, but hey, I mean… it could be a Paradox game with 500$ worth of DLCs. WHEEZE

It’s not for everyone but I like it. Trying to survive as an 80’s delinquent by playing the horses and having random acts of weirdness on the beach is pretty amusing. They are using their starters orders game to play out the races. Apparently in the 80’s bookie shops in England, punters bet on races with only an audio call of the race. I’m only guessing because I’m from the states… Wish they would use the announcer calls for their starters orders races but I digress… So yeah it’s stupid, it’s fun and weird but there is nothing like it. If you like horse racing, then you should give this a go because there just isn’t much out there for us.

New Star Manager

New Star Manager

This is a pretty mild recommendation. It’s a fun game, often. It suffers from a ton of flaws, no doubt due to its target platform of mobile, an industry which is notorious for sloppy and shoddy development, especially in games. In-match controls are tricky and very easy to screw up. Physics is sometimes awkward and nonsensical at moments – esp. when it matters. Team management is a little unrealistic as you are constantly badgered by third-string or second-string players who demand play time – and will play like crap if you don’t give to them, which means you have to constantly rotate good and bad players, weakening your potential XI, just to prevent them from being completely useless. (Imagine if any real teams had to deal with that amount of whining! Football would be out of business!) Rules aren’t always quite right. Your ability for effective team management and growth is largely based on getting bonuses from chance non-match outcomes. You get pittance of money from sponsors and fans (and nothing from investors, who carp and harumph whenever you ask them for money) while you have to raise hundreds of thousands for quality services – not to mention getting AND keeping quality players. Oddly enough, the value you get from sponsors and fans etc. doesn’t change at all from league to league (which are fixed in time from 2017), which is pretty hard to believe – you can’t tell me USL rakes in the same cash as MLS, or EFL1 rakes in the same cash as EPL.

This game is an underrated gem, period.

But before I rave about the actual game, let me tell you a thing about their customer support.

So I purchased New Star Manager one day, installed it and couldn’t run it. Did all the usual steps to troubleshoot, no luck.

Finally, I left a message in the Steam forums stating my problem.

The next day, the publisher got back to me, asking me to perform the usual troubleshooting steps again. No surprise, it didn’t help.

Then I was given a beta code to install a version that writes a logfile so the devs could figure out what was wrong - and something was very wrong because that logfile wasn’t even created.

What would you expect from a game that combines soccer with cows, mines, spartans, cannons, UFOS and air plane bombers & other unspeakable objects of destruction(s)? If you answered a logical, reasonable, responsible gaming experience – Shows you the red card out blows whistle You are dismissed from the field!

Overall rating is 6/10.

This is a somewhat fun, addictive and non-traditional soccer (or football, if you will) game. Instead of controlling any of the characters themselves, you instead get access to a wide range of powerups that you can use to influence the outcome of the game. Initially, you begin with just mines that you can place to blow up the enemy players (or even your own, if you’re so inclined) but as you progress in the game, you get access to other powerups (some of which include cows that run people over, rockets, UFOs that pick players up, rabid fans that help your team kick the ball, etc).

Football School

Football School

This game is fun! Not to be taken too seriously but it still has all the attributes of running a football club from playing decisions like tactics and training plus all the background responsibilities including stadium, finance, marketing and general club development. I’m still learning how to develop team tactics as the game seems more like pinball rather than a regular game of football as there is no goalie and the ball does not go out of play! If anybody is looking for a serious football tactics game like Football Manager then forget it. But this game is still challenging and you do need to consider the decisions carefully in how you run the club. It is very easy to run out of money. For $S10, this is great value.

2 Hour Review:

I love this game. Its no FM20 but its $9 and the administration of a football team is made very fun here with really nice menus. I wish there was a reminder/calendar page or an inbox for notifications like scheduling friendlies and operations because I missed those a few times early on. Being a day behind on a 5 day operation to earn 2 house points puts you out of the storyline in the introduction phase. The gameplay engine for low level teams is crazy bad. I did play a friendly against a level 16 team as a level 2 team and the AI looked much better with accurate passes and shots, leading to a 11-0 a** kicking of my upstart football team. That gives me hope that the grind on training will make the gameplay more exciting as you watch your decisions to play out. I’ve yet to reach the 5v5 leagues and will update once I’ve reached more.

Blood Bowl 2

Blood Bowl 2

I see a lot of negative reviews from people who have played the original blood bowl games which I can’t comment on due to BB2 being my first experience of the game, all I can say is that I love it, if I’ve got free time it’s my first, second and third choice, and if I’m not playing I’m watching a stream :)

Pros:

1. Incredibly deep gameplay/strategy, after 600 hours I still feel like a noob, every team can be developed differently according to how you like to play, and more than half the teams haven’t been released yet so still plenty of variety to come.

Yes I do recommend this game. Yes I probably should take a rage management treatment due to the random nature of the game… STILL, like Poker… this dice game REALLY reward skill, but sometimes the game “deals” you a crappy hand… and then close to anybody can beat you.

Some really love Blood bowl and give it 10/10… some don’t… It’s abit sad that many of the reviews here are made of unexperienced gamers. And if you find the game too expensive - just buy it on sale!?

Unpatient or timid gamers should not play this game. You will experience that the PvP is very hard for new coaches. The skill level of the more experienced coaches are really high and they will punish every mistake. You move 11 players on the pitch in a conversion of a table top game. Turn based, 16 turns each. All the time you need to make risk calculations and use your logic and tactical skills. Read the player/race guides out there, it will help you alot developing your skills! The game should be of course played vs real human opponents… not the AI.

Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition

Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition

This game falls in one of two categories: You will love it immensely, or you will hate it and wish you never played it.

For starters, it has a tremendously high learning curve. I’ve put my share of time in with both this and the legendary edition and I’m still learning new tactics. Couple that with every single team having their own specific playing style that you need to learn to a certain degree, and you have a death sentence for a new player that isn’t patient enough to actually learn the ins and outs of the game.

You will discover new swear words you never knew you needed.

This game is frustrating. Let me say this right off the bat. It. Is. Frustrating. Between the rather convoluted rules and the insane randomness. This game is a pain to get into., especially if you’re unfamiliar with the table-top or previous incarnations. The tutorial helps a little buut the ingame documentation is done in absurdly fine print and is a pairn to read. this is one of those games where you will do most of your learning via play and by play I mean getting your ass handed to you a few times. Once you do learn…the game becomes deliciously satisfying. Still frustrating as hell but the furstration makes the successes all the more satisfying.. Oh there is nothing so great as tackling a guy on the opposing team and sending him to morgue.
