Jerma & Otto: The Curse of the Late Streamer

Jerma & Otto: The Curse of the Late Streamer

Before this game, my only real Jerma exposure was the dollhouse stream… so I’m writing this review from the POV of somebody that just wants a fun game. And I gotta say - I really feel like Curse of the Late Streamer delivers.

The puzzles are never overly challenging, and I say this as someone who generally sucks at point-and-clicks. Everything feels fair. And here’s my advice if you get stuck on a puzzle: just go do something else. There’s plenty to explore and work towards.

It is really really cool how much original art is in this game, too. Characters that are (presumably, again I am a newcomer) all drawn from Jerma lore? 3D environments that both evoke old-school game memories and feel like a real (virtual) space that this guy could live in? The dog is adorable?? Seriously, such an impressive amount of effort.

Tex Murphy: Martian Memorandum

Tex Murphy: Martian Memorandum

The second game of the Tex Muphy series did less genre crossover and had a great strength with its LucasArts-era classic adventure design. Graphically it’s a solid retro adventure FMV mix, the only downside being missing hotspots: even when hovering the mouse over interactible objects there is no cursor feedback whatsoever which made and still makes the game terribly hasslesome on a first playthrough due to easily missing out on interacting with key items on the quite blurry screen. A walkthrough or a frustration tolerance made out of steel might be required for new players. Truth be told, the entire gamedesign is extremely oldschool due to the inherent actual age of the game and it might prove too much of a bother altogether to newer gamers.

Loveable nostalgic experience! Game runs on DOSBOX and is like 27MB in size. Classic point-and-click adventure set in a dystopian post-WW3 era. You play as Tex Murphy, private detective. It absolutely feels like a mixture between Blade Runner and Total Recall and I love it! It borrowed heavily from these two movies but offers enough unique content to stand on it’s own.

Martian Memorandum features a very simple interface with big buttons on the bottom of the screen. Just click on either “LOOK”, “OPEN”, “USE” etc. and then on the object to interact. Unique for it’s time is the usage of some FMV sequences starring real actors. Dialogue sequences play a big role in this game. Chosing the wrong dialogue option leads to uncooperative behaviour. There are also a few “action sequences” like using a hoverboard to pass through a security area with pressure plates and lasers or traversing a ventilation shaft in full 3D!

RUNOUT

RUNOUT

RunOut is a dynamic runner-platformer with logical riddles in the setting of the future. Midcore-Hardcore.

As a result of a hacker attack on the servers of the corporation ‘MFS’, which produces exoskeletons, most of the carriers of exoskeletons were killed. In addition to crashing, some exoskeletons have certain options: shooting, time freeze and acceleration … All this makes us a valuable target not only for policemen, but also for criminals.

The player always runs, when he collides with any obstacle, he turns in the opposite direction. He has to jump, shoot, speed up, slow down time and solve logic riddles that will allow him to pass the level. Find the culprit of all this chaos and save the world.

The 7th Guest: 25th Anniversary Edition

The 7th Guest: 25th Anniversary Edition

Take this game for what it is… a snapshot in time from the early days of CD-ROM gaming. 7th Guest came out at a time when graphic realism and full motion video were cutting edge. Go into it acknowledging its place in the annals of video game history, and there is a good time to be had, for a short while at least. There are some clever puzzles scattered about.

Does the game hold up after all these years? In short, no. It’s a relic from a long forgotten and much maligned era. The visuals were certainly impressive for their time, but we’ve been spoiled heartily since then. What’s left at its core is a series of puzzles which are tame by today’s standards. The difficulty ranges from absurdly easy to absurdly difficult. However, the difficulty is mostly caused by a lack of context, particularly with the Skyscraper puzzle. Most of the puzzles have zero replay value once you’ve figured them out. The cut-scenes are poorly acted, which is on par for the early 90s. The point and click controls are a touch wonky, and there is a severe shortage of items you can actually interact with. The “action” is continually interrupted by voice overs, for some reason you must politely wait for Stauf to mock you (or move over and click the skip button) before you can click anything. The story feels arbitrary, which used to be forgivable because “WOW FMV”, but don’t go in expecting to be entertained it.

Yet another game I wish there was a neutral recommendation for. I’m giving this a thumbs up for the sheer fact that the original game itself was clearly a quality product and for this reason I feel I cannot give it a thumbs down. I can’t help but cynically view this edition, as a cash grab on what was originally a successful game. A way to remove the original from stores and jack the price up after labelling it as “remastered” while cashing in on the loyalty of fans to the title . You know, there’s this saying about ducks…if it walks and talks like one…

Listeria Wars

Listeria Wars

Listeria Wars is a real-time tactical game. You defend against the pathogenic microbes, attacking a single, infected organism. A key feature of Listeria Wars is the parallel viewing experience. In addition to the main game process, you can view the life of the human whose body has become the pathogenic battlefield.

The action in Listeria Wars takes place within the hero’s body. You can see everything that happens to the host’s body in real-time. You manage various types of immune system cells, to protect the body and fend off attacks, from deadly contagions. The body’s immune system develops antibodies, as the action takes place.

The game illustrates a person’s ability to be his own worst enemy: by neglecting personal hygiene, or ingesting rotten food, or failing to follow “social distancing”. You can also view the body’s use of involuntary immune system responses, such as vomiting and diarrhea. The goal is to protect and defend the infected body, from the deadly pathogens.

Key features:

  • FUNNY ADVENTURES OF THE HERO: Watch the effects of malicious pathogens and influence the immune system’s response.

  • CONVENIENT MANAGEMENT: Leukocytes attack intuitively, depending on the situation. Gamers can place these cells strategically and monitor the overall course of defense.

  • PATHOGEN DIVERSITY: Realistic infections, microbes, viruses, bacteria, and other harmful pathogens.

  • TACTICS: Manage unique leukocytes using their tactical advantages against the various pathogens, infecting the host.

  • CATALOG: A log of medical descriptions of the types of immune cells, pathogens, and processes within the body.

  • IMPROVEMENTS: To build a more effective defense, you may build improvements into the defenses of the immune system.

  • ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC: Featuring an original soundtrack from Nuclear Mushroom Boom!

  • PATHOGENIC MODE: You can go to the dark side and try to take over the body, humanity, and the universe!
