Yupitergrad 🚀(Virtual Reality Adventure)

While I’m not a fan of flat shading in VR, this game has fast enough traversal that I did not really mind. The game is essentially as if Windlands and Super Meat Boy had a Russian child in space. The environments are big, impressive, with huge moving elements. Not Jet Island levels but I very much appreciated the scale of things.

I think the most important part of this game is the locomotion, how to traverse the environment, and I have to say it really grew on me. I got the expected boosts from pulling on the roped plunger you are equipped with, launching me in that direction, very satisfying when you’ve grown accustomed to it and I it makes sense that there are time trial levels. You can also extend and retract this rope while it is attached to a surface, which while not necessary most of the time sure can provide utility and flexibility.

(Disclaimer: I was gifted this gem to review it, I don’t even know why you would give me that much power but I really really apprechiate it! Also I was told to beat the shit out of the game and tell the devs over any flaws on a rather direct review example of mine (Windlands if you’re wondering). Basically the disclaimer shouldn’t mean anything but here you go)

A game for all the grappling hook enthusiasts or otherwise movement interested parcour junkies - IT’S NOT AN INDIE ENDLESS RUNNER AS I THOUGHT WHEN I SKIPPED PAST IT*

At Home

This review was made for Elite Giveaways by Anna from Malkavian Madness

At Home is a game with failed potential. In At Home, strangers come into your house and kidnap you. You then must escape from the locked hut you find yourself in. The description can continue, but as another reviewer put it, “[a] lot of words [in the description,] but not all true.” The story is poorly written, there is no fear of dying because you never see the kidnappers, there is no need for stealth, the game is plagued with bugs, and questionable technical decisions run amok.

While this game’s visuals are pretty nice, $5 to me is kind of pushing it. There’s not a lot of substance to the game and spoiler there’s no real threat the entire time. The ambiance is pretty good as I was on edge a bit with the creaking windmill and such, despite being pretty sure there was no real threat. The ambiance and approaching sounds in the woods when you attempt to escape where pretty good too.

Towards the beginning, the lights go out and the doorbell rings. At this time, while you can still find your way to the door, it’s very difficult to see and from a game playing perspective near total darkness in a game where you have to actually feel your way around is not fun, it’s just annoying. I also felt like some mechanics weren’t really explained, such as starting up the car and in a much smaller case, opening the shake’s door. Both require multiple tries, with the car being a lot more unpredictable as far as how long you have to hold the button, or how many times you have to press it.

Ebony Spire: Heresy

Ebony Spire: Heresy

Throwing items at enemies it’s nothing new, but what about enemies throwing things at you? It would be terrifying and exciting, right? This is the big highlight of Ebony Spire: Heresy , a dungeon crawler with kleptomaniac enemies who can use the same items as the player. Yep, this includes casting spells, using scrolls and drinking potions. Think twice before throwing that giant axe on someone – they can, and they will, throw back in your face.

Ebony Spire is a grid-based RPG in the old-school style, but with a twist: It’s designed to be played during a lunch hour or a coffee break.

Imagine you’re waiting for something, an email to come through, a bus, or the bath to finish filling… You want to play something, but are fed up with the bland score-chasers like Bejewelled and Temple-Run which get the adrenaline and endorphines flowing using blingy sounds, and bright graphics. What you want is something you can quickly dive into, but gives you a little bit more cerebral gameplay.

This is my favorite FPS roguelite so far compared to Immortal Redneck, Strafe, or City of Brass. It kind of reminds me of Synthetik (another amazing recent game that no one knows) but in FPP instead of top-down. It already features a bunch of cool upgrades, abilities, and weapons and the movement in 3D is really nice. The ability to double jump and jump/strafe off the walls to avoid enemies is especially nice in the larger, more vertically oriented rooms that I would like to see more of.

All weapons are decently punchy, and they each have their own play style. Every one has a standard and alternate fire which adds some extra spice to the playstyle, because you’ll only be using 1-2 weapons per stage in the beginning. For example, the basic pistol ricochets with alternate fire, while shotgun shoots a long distance slug. They’re mostly projectile based, too, so the skill floor is higher than most.

Dammit, I want, I need, I crave some action. Got to be FPS, no more of that top down aRPG stuff. Done Diablo to hell, tired of complex Deus Ex, System Shock, Bioshock, Thief, Dishonored gaming. Even Dying Light has too many damn buttons. Something I can pick up and play after work, for either a short or long session.

I want some arcade like action. I don’t need no fricking doors. No more Elder Scrolls lockpicking. I want action.

I also want cool stuff. Like Liquid Nitrogen cool stuff. You know. What you don’t know? What is wrong with you young whippersnappers?! Ook, I’ll tell you what you want.

I was commenting on a review of the game on youtube. And then realized that I didnt review the game here. Ill just copy+paste my comment:

This game is like the opposite of the big launchtitles for oculus rift. Maybe mostly to Luckys tale.

The other games is made to make VR look AAA from a aesthetic angle, but the core mechanics is not so deep that it would make you continue playing after finishing the game, and you basically already master the game from the first minute.

Windlands is skillbased and you continually master it more and more. The more you get gud the more fun it gets. It gets very punishing a bit into the game, and at the same time the level of mastery you achieve makes you able to pull of the craziest stunts.

Wrote this review without knowledge of current events. Spent time writing it so I figured I might as well post it. No comment on the developer one way or the other, this is 100% only my experience with the game:

To start off I’m going to say this is one of the most nauseating VR experiences I’ve played. The comfort cage can help, but the core gameplay has you moving quickly, constantly. I personally was not bothered by this, but many friends I’ve shown had to take the headset off within 10-15 minutes, and a handful could not play at all. People also frequently lost their balance after their first big jump, so make sure you have a good play area to work with. You can play this game well enough sitting, which helps ome. The control scheme could probably use some refining, but that’s true of 90% of VR experiences at the moment. The ground movement in particular felt odd, but I can’t really think of how they would have done it differently. Fortunately, you don’t spend a lot of time on the ground.

At first I thought this was a classic case of ‘baby’s first game’ syndrome. Clunky movement, basic visuals. Then the signature Kris Takahashi writing kicked in and I started laughing every two minutes. There is so much excellent dialogue and neatly observed satire in here that you forget the cheap-looking parts entirely. If you don’t mind a largely text-based game, then the quality of the writing makes this a decent way to spend some time. Some of the music is really very good too, which helps. For a few quid, I don’t feel short-changed at all.

This game has the vibe of “What if 1984 had a bunch of robots in it…and also (an optional) happy ending?”

The game gives you:

  • Cats!

  • Green buggy creature-features

  • Puns and jokes so awfully good you hate yourself for laughing

  • Robots with more fleshed-out personalities than your average coworker

  • Philosophy

The game doesn’t give you:

  • Crippling depression about the inescapability of the capitalist system

  • Striking fear of the grim place that is your future

  • Freecam during conversations (this is the only feature of the 3 I’m mentioning I’d love to see)

Dude…the price is so worth it! You will be pleasantly surprised when you play this game on how brilliant it is…I am really impressed. Not the longest game, but it can be depending on how long it may take for you in particular to beat. Such cool content in the game, awesome little jump scares when you see how odd and bizarre the creatures are! Really cool, good job!

50 cents for one achievement. Good deal.

Obviously not worth the full price. The game is a confusing buggy mess… But for 50 cents, it was quite a hilarious thing to experience.

My favorite part was looking up and seeing my own name tag.

Homeless Simulator

Homeless Simulator

Homeless Simulator is both an encapsulating and eye-opening experience. It allows you to look at the world through the eyes of a homeless man. The desperation displayed when searching bins for objects necessary for survival, the music expertly conveying the depressing lifestyle and bleak future of a homeless person who has nothing to live for.

And finally, the upstanding citizens of the community looking completely the same and completely ignoring your struggle to survive shows the disgusting attitude towards homeless people. I truly recommend this to anyone who wishes to themselves in the shoes of a homeless and experience their struggles firsthand.
