BlazBlue Centralfiction

BlazBlue Centralfiction

I was actually planning to do this after I complete arcade mode with all the characters but I probably won’t even be doing that anytime soon so I might as well review this game now. BlazBlue has done a lot for me throughout the 2 years that I have been playing the series and I hope others will be able to experience something similar to what I did.

I’ll point this out now so that it’s clear: BlazBlue isn’t for absolutely everyone. I’ll just lay out the points that I think define the game.

Thanks ASW/H2 for the great port.

Pros:

  • Latest BB available on consoles, now on PC. for cheap. (BBCF is still only on JPN arcades atm)

  • Online mode works. Yes, a working online mode. In 2016. Isn’t that amazing?

  • One of the best, if not the best, netcode.

  • DirectInput Support.

  • Single player content. TONS of them. (Arcade, Story mode, Challenge, Abyss, Score Attack, Unlimited Mars, Challenge, Training, an extra story mode, and a couple of stuff for newcomers)

  • Tutorial will show you the ropes and Challenge mode can make you master some complex combos.

Ever since the final game in the series CentralFiction pissed me off to a full degree, I’ve pretty much boycotted the franchise.

But I figured that’s not really fair on this game, considering how much of an advancement it is.

You can now temporarily power up your character in the midst of a fight by pressing all four attack buttons. Each character powers up differently. Ragna absorbs more health with his drive attacks, Makoto’s punches will constantly be at full power and Hazama conjures up that goddamn barrier that drove me insane in the previous game.

Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel

Very awesome fighting game.

It’s a cross-over fighting game, but I was able to enjoy it with no knowledge of most characters when I first started.

It’s an anime fighter, as one could tell from the anime artstyle. Thus, you will encounter some mechanics from similar games such as air-dashes, a focus on long and flashy combos, burst and roman cancel systems, etc.

Like other fighters of this subgenre, normals are split into three buttons: A, B, and C, representing Light, Medium, and Heavy attacks. This game also include additional buttons D and E for even slower and stronger normals, as well as a universal dash-cancelling system.

When I was spending a year away from my regular school at my local community college, I always hung out in a room on campus where there were guys playing YuGiOh, Vanguard, emulators via a Nintendo Wii, and one guy always playing various fighting games.

There were 3 I remember the most, Tekken 6, BlazBlue (Don’t remember which one though), and this game. I played it with him a few times, liked what I saw, but I couldn’t get my hands on it, lack of a Playstation to put the disc into and all that. So, when I woke up to see that this game got released on steam and I had a coupon given to me because of some cross-promotion with Skullgirls (another phenomenal fighter), I spent little time adding the money to my steam wallet to pick this one up.

Battle Girls

Battle Girls

A short, mecha fighting story with some romance options brought to you by the Dharker Studios.

You were chosen as a mecha pilot to represent your nation in an international competition. Just to be clear, there is no mecha action here, it’s pure VN. You have several battles to go through and multiple choices to reach one of many endings. While the VN is relatively short, to complete all scenarios will likely double the length so it’s not bad. Your choice will also influence if and who will you end up with. Writing quality is acceptable but there is not enough character development here. No real heroines' backgrounds or motivations present. Also, the main character was left as a blank slate, no sprite, no face, little to none personality. There are some slip ups and inconsistencies, e.g. wrong names used or story referring to events that did not occur due to the previous choices. Still, I enjoyed it more than expected from low budget VNs. One of better VNs from this developer.

So some background. I’m a FPS and RPG kinda person, but have played various other genres. My first visual novel was Doki Doki Literature Club, and it changed my life (good game, check it out it’s free). So when I was making a badge and got a coupon for this game, it peaked my interests.

However, instead of being just some cheap game with no depth, I was surprised to see how much depth this game’s story went into. I will admit, I don’t get the whole thing about it being a school or something, and yet they are battling other countries so they get an untrained dude to fight for them. But whatever….

-BETA REVIEW-

Fun game, really like the story and i was really determined to get good scores THANKS FORXA BTW for making it super hard to get 1K points lmao

Its definitely one of those games that are quick to learn but difficult to master, despite its rng but its the rng makes it fun to fight again and again until you got nice scores

For a game made by one person, I can see potential in this and hope to see it updating and bring out more fights in the future

It’s a fun little game. Getting a win feels satifsying, fights can get intense, has an interesting story and kick-ass music. It’s a bit clunky sometimes but all-in-all, it’s enjoyable and I recommend.

A caveat: I played the game an hour after release, this review is the day after. Supposedly bug fixes are being done on the game, my opinions may change if the game is fixed.

An excellent game in many regards, but the version has new netplay that replaced the old. For many, playing online is unplayable - even when the previous version (non steam ver which I’ve played hundreds of hours of) worked fine with these players. For some, the new netplay works but there are some egregious problems.

1: someone joining a full lobby can disconnect currently playing people.

Real player with 422.6 hrs in game

-EDIT: Most of the Japanese text issues are already fixed, and the remaining ones (credits, system voice unlock message, replay save prompt) are being worked. Now all those people who couldn’t play the game because the move list didn’t say “Sommelier Finger” instead of “ソムリエフィンガ” next to the clear picture of a quarter circle backwards + A/B/C can train in peace.

On to the actual review:

PROS:

-ROLLBACK NETCODE. It still has its share of minor issues to iron out as it gets wider usage, but what has been implemented here is vastly superior to the original Japanese PC version, and more than most poverty games get. (Did the original releases of Chaos Code and Blade Arcus even have netplay at all?)

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend

I wrote a review previously for this game a month ago but complained about one major thing that was missing from the port: the inability to view opponents' connections. You’d have to experiment with different rooms and players to see who has a playable connection with you and who does not. There was also no way to stop laggy people from joining your room either.

However, the recent online patch has fixed this issue. What really makes me happy though is not that it’s finally fixed, but rather that the publisher, H2, was actually kind enough to release a patch.

As an introduction, I am a veteran player of Guility Gear and Blazblue series. I’ve won numerous tournaments in all versions of Blazblue and held the rank #1 spot for several characters on Xbox live. As i write this review I will be as neutral as possible.

Blazbue is a very unique fighting game franchise, many call it the sister of Guility Gear. Blazblue is an air dasher, high speed, combo heavy fighting game. The game is very visually satisfying and has one hell of a soundtrack. People who have a history in Street figher, SoulCaibur, DOA, Tekken, etc. Tend to somewhat stray away from Blazblue. The game sets itself apart by its core engine mechanics and unforgivable mistakes.

Shuyan Saga™

Shuyan Saga™

As we’ve come to love, some visual novels are truly amazing, they deliver a story in such a deep beautiful way that it truly is an inspiration or pure bliss to play and enjoy the game, this is what we have with Shuyan Saga, a truly amazing story filled with Action and Adventure, with a little dash of clicking gameplay, something not very common in Visual Novel games, but a real fun add on to an great game.

A Brief intro into the story can be summarized as follow, We have a Princess, a Evil Overlord hell bent on subduing ancient spirits to increase his power so he can rule the world, a deep Chinese theme filled with Chinese Mythology, all in all a very decent package delivering an truly amazing experience. As usual i don’t share too much story lines in Visual Novels since the game is pure story based, so easy to spoil for some.

Made by the Canadian developer Loftysky Entertainment, Shuyan Saga features a typical revenge story set in the ancient China presumably the Qin dynasty period. The character development & progression is good as we see Shuyan develop from a playful princess to a mature and responsible young lady throughout the course of the game.

Shuyan saga shows true love for the Chinese culture and uses thousands if not more original artwork to make the game feel authentic and absolutely gorgeous to look at. While I feel the English dub is really good, the recently updated Chinese dub is where Shuyan Saga really nailed it. It actually sounded so much professional and better than most Chinese games nowadays. It shows that much effort has been put into the selection process to faithfully recreate the true to period Chinese dialogue.
